I quite liked the place, actually. We booked a sea-front balcony room, which was nicely decorated and clean. So, what's the problem? Well ... the hotel supplies ashtrays on the balcony, which means that they implicitly allow guests to smoke. UNFORTUNATELY, most of this smoke pours into the neighbouring rooms. One night we almost choked on filthy tobacco smoke!! As such, we had to shut the doors: so much for the expensive balcony room!

From the outside, this hotel looks very welcoming and well maintained. You walk up some steps into the main reception lounge/bar/area and it is exactly what I expected – a nice, simply furnished seaside hotel. The staff were excellent and check in was very easy. Very good first impression.

As soon as you go through the door to the stairs leading to bedrooms, it takes a distinctly downmarket turn. It is shabby to say the least.

Our bedroom (No 10) was on second floor overlooking the seafront. The room was small but adequate. However, it was in a pretty poor state. The blind had a big hole in it meant the room would never be properly dark. All of the furniture i.e. lamp shades, drawers, bedside table etc were battered, chipped and generally in need of replacement. The bathroom tiles are batters and move when stepped on. Because the floor tiles are raised, the bathroom door does not open and close properly. The shower was a complete waste of time as it was just a mixer tab over the bath. If I was judging the hotel on just the room, it would not get any stars. The room is disgraceful.

The food in the bar was good as was breakfast.

Staff were all attentive but not enough of them. At breakfast, it certainly took a long time to get served, breakfast eventually came but no cutlery. There was nowhere for us to get cutlery and so we had to wait to get waiter’s attention. This just meant we were hanging around a long time. However, I must say that all staff we very polite and friendly.

Overall, this is not a place to which I would ever return. The rooms are so shockingly poor, that at the rate of £70 per night, they are simply not good value. If they renovate the rooms, the location, the staff and the good food would encourage me to return. I appreciate its a small privately run hotel, but they really need to sort the rooms out quickly.

Room Tip: light sleepers need a room at the back of hotel away from the road.

We stay for one night cancelled our second night as the hotel was dirty with badly stained carpets through out the hotel, my daughter would not put her baby down on the floor, our room had not been cleaned the bathroom had cracked and loose tiles on the floor and stained cracked tiles round the bath the plug in the sink was useless, the furniture was very old and damaged the TV did not work, to use the kettle it had to stand in front of the TV as the only plug was behind the TV near the floor, which was very dangerous, the room had no curtains and the blind had a large hole in it, the window would not open, so no ventilation, the bedding looked clean but had a yellowish tint on it, the room was in need of redecorating, the lift was smelly and dark it smelt like a toilet it did not work of a night and the lighting in the hallways and stairs was poor especially when you need to carry a baby and pram up to the second floor, the breakfast was fair, I would strongly recommend you did not try this hotel it is awful, only for the fact we were on our way to a wedding I would not have stayed the first night. The entrance to the hotel is pleasant and deceiving when you go through the inner door it is like entering a different hotel it was quite a shock do not be deceived by the pictures on the web site it is truly the WORST hotel we have ever stayed in made worse because I told a friend we were staying here and she joined us so I felt awful

Room Tip: try another hotel

The Sandgate Hotel is a lovely hotel. The Staff are friendly and helpful. The room which I stayed in was decorated with a modern chic feel. In fact, the whole feel of the hotel was stylish and funky. The food was extremely delicious. I would strongly recommend the fish menu. The Swordfish salad was fantastic…. I am looking to book in again at the end of this month, for a couple of nights with my family. Can’t wait!

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER AGAIN, what a dirty, filthy hotel!!!! We chose this hotel as we where attending a wedding nearby (which was fantastic by the way!!). On arrival the reception area was quite nice and welcoming as was the receptionist, she even gave us an upgrade to a balcony room, yippee!! Once we entered the inner door to head towards our room we started to became very doubtful about the cleanliness of the hotel, tell tale signs like dirty carpets!!! Our doubts were well founded, what a disappointment the room was (heaven knows what our original room was like). The carpet was so dirty we wouldn't walk on it without our shoes on. There was a very grubby velvet chair with a grubby looking velour throw thrown on it. No curtains only a roller blind which was very cracked and torn in places. To boil the kettle we had to put it on the floor as that was the only plug, even the tray which held the teacups etc and was rusty!!! The bed was like sleeping on concrete and only 1 wafer thin pillow. But hey the towels were clean!!!The bedroom furniture was bulky and black and was chipped and cracked in places.
Now for the bathroom, the toilet seat was loose and the flush wouldn't work, there were wall tiles missing, the floor tiles were cracked, the shower head had to be held to have a shower as it kept falling out of holder. Don't forget this was an upgrade!!!!
Breakfast was very greasy, the bacon was mostly fatty rind and to top it all off the milk jug was dirty inside with stale crusty milk lodged around the handle, it made me feel quite sick. Thankfully we were only there for 1 night and we paid the sum of £90 for the pleasure of staying in this awful, neglected hotel. I could go on and on with complaint after complaint, but I think you will have an idea about our stay. We are not the type of people to complain but this stay was not pleasant, trust me this is a true refelection of this hotel in our opinion, so you have been warned!!!!
