Good:
Massive Car Park
Big bedrooms (a double with 3 seat settee and a family double with a 'spare' double bed and 2 seat settee.)
Evening meals prepared and served - with no corkage for your own wine.
Generous breakfast.
Amazing bird feeders with plenty of local wildlife.
Really really quiet setting towards the head of the valley.
Little ambient light so excellent for star-gazing.
Masses of curios - everywhere.

Not so Good:
approx 30 minutes walk to Dent village - not 20 as advertised.
Creaky floor - if you take the long walk to visit to bathroom at night.
No over-bath shower (or shower) to rinse your hair.
No lighting along the road to the village - so take a torch.

Room Tip: Smaller double has 3 windows looking onto bird feeders and garden: Larger double has superb view ac...

Arriving on a dark wet November night after a days walking on the fells we were greeted by "mine host" - the jovial Anthony and his wife Gwynneth who have lived at Smithy Fold since 1989.

Anthony concentrates on "front of house" and Gwynneth on the delicous evening meals which consist of traditional home cooking - three course meals with all diets catered for. £15 (Nov 2011) with home made soups to start, just what we needed. It was so good we had the evening meal both nights - that speaks for itself. After a fruit crumble and custard on day one I was slightly dissapointed by the chocolate mousse second night but the home made soup and meat and four veg main course before the mousse were adequate compensation!

Tea making (with fresh milk) is available in the rooms of the large cottage which sits next to Whernside Manor, about one mile east of Dent, sitting under the large rump of Aye Gill Pike. There is a guest lounge with small screen Freeview TV and a log fire.

For walkers wanting an early start to catch daybreak in the winter months, Anthony goes out of his way and caters for breakfast at any time. We were tucking into our bacon and eggs at 7.00am. This is very unusual and was much appreciated by my friend Nick and I.

I did not take my dog but dogs are allowed to stay - not sure if any charge is made for this.

There are no en-suite bathrooms, but the tariff is commensurate with that and something I can live without if everything else is right, as it was at Smithy Fold.

We've stayed several times at this beautiful old house in Dentdale, and its charm keeps pulling us back.

The property is a few hundred years old and set in spacious gardens. Outside the kitchen window is one of the busiest bird-tables I've ever seen. In the space of 15 minutes we saw a woodpecker, a siskin and all manner of finches. One of the bedrooms overlooks the bird table and it's difficult to tear yourself away!

There are three guest rooms, all sharing a communal bathroom. We've stayed in the two larger rooms and have found them to be incredibly peaceful. They are full of antique furniture and bits and pieces to look at, as well as a sink and tea/coffee facilities. One nice touch is that they will leave you fresh milk in a pot with cling-film over the top - much nicer than the usual little longlife pots.

There is a large lounge for residents with a lovely natural fireplace which they light for guests in the evenings. Breakfast is served in the farmhouse kitchen, around a single large table. For dinner there are two pubs to choose from in Dent, which is a mile walk along the country lane from the Smithy Fold.

We would normally choose en-suite accommodation, but everything else about the Smithy Fold makes it a firm favourite. With the communal breakfast table and cosy lounge, Smithy Fold feels much more like a home than a hotel. Anthony and Gwynneth make welcoming hosts, as do their pet cat and dog who seem to spend most of the time deployed as a trip hazard on the landing!
