The George and Dragon
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Dent
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 30, 2012

The George and Dragon enjoys a great location at the centre of an iconic Dales village. It is the Brewery Tap for the award winning Dent Brewery and gives CAMRA members a discount on its fine ales. Food arrived in portions that will test the most avaricious appetite and our well appointed room provided a comfortable night’s sleep. A little more care and attention to detail during our stay, would have upgraded the overall experience.

We had a warm welcome at the bar (from Ian), and were delighted to see a total of six Dent beers available. Better still, they were available to try as three x thirds of a pint, and there is a CAMRA discount of 20p per pint. Naturally, we tried all six, with five being excellent, and the other at the end of the barrel (i.e. oxidised and not nice). Having pointed this out, it was agreed that the offending beer was at the end of the barrel, but it was not taken off as it should have been. The food was very average overall. Though the steak (in the pie) and the vegetables were good, the pastry on the pie and the 'home-made' chips were very dry and hard work. In fact, the chips were probably the worst that I have ever encountered!
In our week in Dentdale and Wensleydale, it was hard to find beers other than Theakstons and Black Sheep, which were both very common. So, as far as the beers were concerned, The George and Dragon in Dent was far and away the best for miles, but the same could not be said for the food.

We stayed here for one night, and to be honest, that was enough. Dent is a tiny village, with only one other pub, the Sun. We did visit the dog friendly sun and drank Hambleton ales, but returned to the George and Dragon for a good hearty meal of steak pie and the beer from Dent brewery that was really on form. There was however no escape from the off duty staff who spent the evening propping up the bar and swearing. These lads were pleasant and friendly, but unfortunately seemed to use four letter curses as adjectives. The room was nothing special, but clean, warm and modern. We got a special price of £60 on "laterooms" and I think this is what it was worth rather than the hefty £90 as advertised

I'd not seen the reviews before going to this hotel/bar. I accept today, being lunch time may have been a bad day to bob in. However, we embarassingly witnessed the landlord being rude to his wife (assuming she was the unlucky lady). We went into an empty bar & were greated by a friendly old dog bless! The landlord served us beer & then disappeared so when we wanted to order food there was no-one around. We finally ordered off a lady. The food was nice/ok. We watched football & the landlord was pleasant to us, but continued to speak in a very disrespectful manner to the poor lady. We've been frequent visitors to the other pub in the village The Sun & will definitely go back there next time we are in the area. Sorry but my advice to the George & Dragon is to keep domestics back stage. It makes customers very uncomfortable.

This was the most expensive place I stayed at during my Dales Way walk at £90 per night. The bedroom was pretty tired and old fashioned. The service was OK, but not particularly welcoming and the service at dinner was rather abrupt. There doesn't appear to many options for accomodation in Dent, so the G&D are hardly pushed for competition. The beer was very good, but the food only average. I stayed for one night and it was fine, but wouldn't have wanted to stay longer. Pretty average and over-priced.

This hotel was fine, clean and basic, but with a price-tag that would usually get much more modern and high quality facilities. The rooms are a bit tired, and we had to search out staff to get any service at breakfast. That said, if you have reason to stay in Dent, it does the job.

Without doubt the best pub in the village. The Hotel is well run by Gary and supported by friendly helpfull staff that provide excellent accommodation and the food is fantastic. I stayed for a week and decided to smash the menu and both myself and my partner could not decide a favourite. All food sourced locally and can honestly say I have never seen such generous portions like it before. Price wise I found them average compared to most hotels, but then most dont offer locally produced real Ale (Dent). The Ale is well kept and very reasonable prices. I have already arranged another visit. The location is ideal for coast to coast and central for the lakes and Howgills and good walking
