“Good Food - but why the change of name?”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

Have recently moved closer to Holcome and thought lunch would be nice at the 'Ring of Bells'.
We were surprised to find the name of the place had changed and wondered why.
Food was good and plenty of it (important for always ravenous 16 year old son). Fish Cakes were FAB.
Nice staff and all round a very good experience. Will visit again soon.

Thank you for your review of appreciation of the meal you recently enjoyed with us. I notice you have also written a previous review on the restaurant side of Trip advisor stating that you also very much enjoyed the food etc but marked us down because of the change of name of the pub. You mention that it was "The Ring of Bells" The original name of this 17th Century Inn was "The Holcombe Inn" when it was a spit and sawdust cider house ( how I'd love to be transported back in time briefly to see that!)
Now there are tales suggesting why the name was changed to "The Ring O Roses" (not the Ring of Bells, now getting confusing I know, so hope anyone reading is following this!) such as, following the plague when so many children died, they renamed it after a nursery Rhyme that the children used to sing.
I believe it was about 12 years ago that the previous owners decided to revert the name back to the original Holcombe Inn as Holcombe has so much history even to be mentioned in The Domesday book. All very interesting..... Perhaps next time you pop in for lunch if you listen carefully you may hear the children's footsteps upstairs above the bar! Now that's another story!

Whatever the name I do hope you will continue to enjoy this beautiful old Inn and do say hello next time you are in.

Booked as holiday abroad was cancelled. Was fabulous from beginning to end. We stayed in Hunters room, ate there both nights. Staff were all very friendly and even called after we left to say we had left our photo's from Longleat. They've not arrived back with us yet said they would even send them to us. Would definitely go back & recommend.

A little tricky to find, but worth every effort.

Room was lovely, although shower a little small and TV signal not strong on all freeview channels.
Breakfast excelled expectations, although fresh orange juice would have been nice, but that's just been picky.

If these had been right, then it would have been 5 out of 5!

Had dinner the night before in the resturant - busy for a Tuesday night which is always a good sign - food again was very good if a little pricey.

Got a good deal on the rate and would use again if in the area at the right price.

Thank you for your review and all the lovely positive points. you mention the shower being small. All our rooms are different, All but one have separate shower cubicles, some have luxury freestanding baths and a separate shower, one has a huge wet room shower and a freestanding bath and 2 have lovely shower rooms with standard size showers which space allows. If you visit again perhaps ask which rooms have larger showers, we are very happy for you to choose if available. T.V signal should be good with boosters in place, we are unaware of any interruption to signal but will investigate this further so thank you for letting us know. We are considering a coffee/ juice bar at The Holcombe Inn where we will be serving freshly squeezed orange juice so watch this space!

We stayed here for one night en route to Cornwall. What a find! Wonderful hosts welcomed us in to a stunning old inn which has been converted to a stunning standard. Our room was beautiful, large comfy king bed, welcome tray, mineral water, plenty of storage, lovely seating area with views across the fields to a cathedral. The bathroom was large with lovely natural tiling, a bath and fab rain shower head. Nice toiletries, tissues and luxury towels.
Downstairs in the bar there are a great choice of drinks. The restaurant, with art for sale on the walls, is calm and welcoming and the food and service is first class.
We loved everything about this place and would highly recommend it.

Booked room because we were going to longleat. Room was very clean and comfortable, bathroom was excellent would like one of these back home. The food and breakfast were excellent, my boyfriend said the best steak and lamb he had ever eaten and I have to agree, service was also brilliant friendly staff. We also changed our booking and they were happy to accommodate. The only 1 negative thing I can say is we couldn't connect to the wifi in our room but you can get 3G. Overall an excellent stay and would love to come back in the future.

My husband booked this as a anniversary stay but having a 3year old and a 4 week old we thought we'd struggle but everyone was so helpful couldn't do enough for us. The room was beautiful and plenty of room for all 4 of us. The little touches in the room made it special. You can see that a lot of pride is taken to make all the rooms clean and tidy. We had a meal in the restaurant and it was lush my only complaint was that the starters we wanted were sold out but we didn't sit down until 8pm so can't be helped. Would recommend to everyone and would certainly stay again

We had our wedding here this weekend 7th September 2013 and booked a number of rooms. All the rooms were just pure luxury and so clean. We had a fantastic wedding with every thing taken care of by Jules and her team. The setting was fantastic the food was out of this world and just the general warmth and atmosphere of the place made it a very special day with every detail taken care of.
I am not a local man to the area but this place is an absolute gem of a place
