Finding somewhere for a first year wedding anniversary was always going to be a challenge but we were really pleased to have chosen to spend it at Burpham Country House. It was perfect for an escape from London - quiet and within an easy two hour drive.

The hosts are superb, the food at the brasserie excellent and the honesty bar well stocked. We stayed in - I think - room 6 which was nice and quiet at the top of the house. Being a special occasion I'd asked for flowers and chocolates as a surprise - both from local suppliers and were above expecatations.

The owners know all the local walks so there's no need to trawl the web before you leave home. Arundel is a few minutes away by car but Burpham is a distinct village in it's own right with stunning views of the castle from surrounding hills. If you want a countryside experience without having to get in the wellies then pick this place. The only regret is we just stayed one night and not two.

For many years we have spent our holidays in various parts of England and this year we were so lucky to have found wonderful Burpham Country House off the beaten track in the old and quiet little village of Burpham - but on the other hand not far from Arundel and the seaside. What a lucky find ! Jackie and Steve Penticost gave us a warm welcome. Our room was large and light, beautifully furnished and clean. The house and nice garden is located in beautiful contryside - ideal for us being walkers - and we quickly felt at home. When we had a special wish it was immediately seen to. We would like to emphasize that we have never been offered such an outstanding breakfast menue with a large variety of delicious food also for vegetarians.
We appreciated most that Burpham Country House is a small hotel, so we could quickly feel so much at home and it has a nice Brasserie with excellent food. We enjoyed Steve's delicious cooking each night. What a pity that we had to go back to Germany after our week's stay but we will be back in July!

We stayed here in October 2009 in room 7 at the top of the house. There are lots of things we liked, but also some disapointments for us. It is a nice big old house. Owners are friendly and aim for a casual atmosphere.

Nice big room, comfy big bed, good bed linen. In the middle of nowhere, so really quiet for a good night's sleep. The complimentary sherry was low grade. There were a fair number of dead flies on the window sill - otherwise all was clean.

We ate in each night. The first night was better than the second - my meat was not the best quality and the veggies were poorly cooked. So a problem with consistency we feel. The dining room appears a tad formal, but actually isn't, thank goodness.

Breakfasts were adequate, but nothing special. On our second morning there were croissants - fresh out of their supermarket packaging - so squashed up and cold.

The way we see it, the owners have struck a balance between their private and work lives - and good luck to them. But a little extra time attending to detail might be advised. For instance - in the honesty bar, someone had cut a slice of lemon - the same lemon was there the following night, shrivelled up, along with the dirty knife and board.

There are so many establishments to choose from in this country - so on balance we will try another one next time.

Reviews of all kinds are important to us, but we do think it equally important, with a lower score, that we state our current levels of service.

Our breakfast menu includes a full English grill with local sausages and bacon, omelettes, pancakes and compote, cereals and porridge, fresh fruit, home-made smoothies, eggs benedict and vegetarian options. If a very early breakfast is requested, we put out a basket of croissants, fruit and cereals the night before so that a guest can make a quick getaway- we have never served croissants at all as a standard breakfast item, so we're puzzled.

We do encourage people to comment at the time through the use of feedback sheets, and received no adverse comments at all in that month on the food or the rooms. All our food is freshly cooked, and any requests at the time can be quickly dealt with.

What a great place in a beautiful Sussex village. We stayed in room 7 which is large and has a lovely large window seat for taking in the sun and views.

The breakfast was good and served in a large conservatory. As we were only there for one night we didn't have a chance to sample the restuarant, but the menu looked interesting.

Definately a place worth a second visit.

My wife and I recently had the pleasure of staying at this hotel of the beaten track for a chill out break. The facilities, location and most importantly food was outstanding. We were made most welcome throughout out our stay. Our host Steve and Jackie Penticost (not forgetting the cat Lucy) made us most welcome. Their local knowledge and in particular the history of the area was impressive. We dined in their Brasserie and found the food outstanding (loved Steve's home made fish cakes) and would recommend their locally sourced menus. Overall Highly Recommended. We will be back.

We've stayed at Burpham Country House several times now and it just gets better and better. In fact we love it so much that we had our wedding reception there last year which was absolutely fantastic. Jackie and Steve are brilliant hosts and they have created a beautiful, homely place for guests to enjoy. Rooms are beautifully and tastefully furnished and no attention to detail is spared. We ate in the hotel both evenings we were there. Steve has created a wonderful menu of modern British and European dishes, including venison, chicken, beef bourgignon and duck. Portions are perfect and the service by Jackie and her staff is attentive without being intrusive. Breakfast is delicious and as well as the traditional cooked English grill, you can take your pick from healthier options such as the Burpham smoothie and smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. It was a shame that we weren't staying longer as we could've happily worked our way through the rest of the menu for both breakfast and dinner!

We have stayed at some amazing hotels around the world but Burpham Country House remains top of our list and we can't wait to stay there again.
