An anazing culinary experience, I was one of a group of ten and between us we sampled most of the menu, everyone loved what they had chosen ! How often would that happen.? The staff were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble right through to beakfast which was perfect. Our room was lovely and our friends all seemed pleased with theirs too. We all thought it was a wonderful break and will definitely be returning. Thankyou Checkers.

Room Tip: All rooms are great but not all have a bath, be sure to mention it when booking if it is important t...

We stayed here before Christmas. We had an excellent meal with fantastic amuse bouche with our drinks in the lovely front bar. Our room was comfortable and nicely styled with a good en suite. Definitely worth the trip from South Wales.

We stayed one night in the Agen room. As there are no photos on the website, we wondered what to expect. After a warm welcome, we were shown to our very comfortable room overlooking Montgomery's beautiful square, furnished in a smart contemporary style. Its ensuite modern bathroom (down a short flight of stairs) is equally attractive, with a deep rolltop bath.

We had an amazing 3 course dinner in the restaurant, eating from the a la carte menu (there are also two tasting menus). There is a varied choice, focussing on local ingredients. We could have eaten anything on the menu, which changes seasonally. The food was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented and, unlike many Michelin starred restaurants, the portions were generous (but not so large that we felt overfull). My wife's "Celtic pride" beef melted in the mouth and had a wonderful flavour. The crackling on my pork belly was just as I like it - crisp but not hard. Everything was just perfect, from the canapés that came with our aperitifs to the petit fours with the coffee.

There is a good selection of wines, starting at £18 for an Argentinian red which went well with our main courses. Several of their wines are supplied by Tanners, the excellent local wine merchant.

Breakfast was very good too, with a wide choice. Particularly loved the crispy Neuadd Fach bacon and the freshly baked toasted brioche.

The staff are charming and looked after us very well.

Our first visit, but we enjoyed it so much that we booked our next stay before we left. I was brought up in the area and have visited the area regularly since, staying and eating in a variety of local hotels and restaurants - the Checkers knocks spots off all of them, by a country mile. Not cheap, but good value for what you get.

Having had an superb evening meal (see our other review) we were disappointed by our overnight stay. The room was cold (radiator not working) and electric heater not powerful enough. In our view the breakfast offering was average at best - very little yoghurt and fruit left to chose from, over cooked bacon, and rather lacklustre service. Not a patch on what we have experienced at other restaurants with rooms - let alone ones with a Michelin star!
Maybe we were unlucky as we stayed a mid week in November - we will definitely be back for dinner, but will try another hotel next time.

Definitely a restaurant with rooms, rather than a hotel. And definitely a restaurant with "michelin star" written all over it. Unusually for a fine dining establishment where one can reach the end of the meal hungry, there is an abundance of riches on your plate- eat early! And you will need to walk some of the excellent, if tiring, Offa's Dyke path to work off some of the excess calories. A very friendly establishment in a lovely Welsh border town.

Stayed here for one night whilst walking the Offa's Dyke Path, so thought we would indulge a little by staying here.
A very friendly welcome and the room was comfortable and beautifully furnished. The bath was a real treat - you probably could get quite a few people in it!
We had dinner in the restaurant - The food was very good with a great range on the menu. For a Michelin starred restaurant, one may expect small portions and perhaps on the very expensive side, but the food was reasonably priced for the quality and portions were very substantial. Service was generally good but not the most personal service we have experienced - we seemed to have several waitresses taking our orders etc. so lost some continuity of service, but not a major gripe.
A good night's sleep understandably followed in a very comfy bed.
As we were leaving on Sunday morning, breakfast is usually served form 9am - but the staff kindly agreed to arrange breakfast for half an hour earlier so that we could start on the next leg of our walk - which was greatly appreciated.

This is a top class restaurant. I have eaten here about four times in the past two years. It never ever fails to impress. From the excellent delicate handmade appetizers that are given before your meal, down to the last scraping of decoration from your dessert plate, its all wonderful. The service is also as excellent as the meals they serve. I would recommend everyone to visit here at least once in your lifetime, and taste for yourself not only the superb cuisine, but the friendly, professional hospitality and beautiful setting.
