This small but near perfect little gem in Montgomery is always worth the 100 mile round trip. Wonderful staff and sublime food has really put this little Welsh town on the tourist map.
A must for anyone staying in the area. There is certainly nothing in Shrewsbury which compares.

We visited this restaurant on 9th March, with a friend who has just moved to the area ( lucky him). We were very warmly greeted, and made to feel welcome straight away, the comforting log fire was lovey to sit near so atmospheric. The apertisers we were served with our aperatives were just a taste of the superbe meal we were about to enjoy, and we DID, each course was no less that perfect, there were lots of MMMs coming from our table. The service was excellent and the timing between each course spot on. We have visited many Michelin stared reataurants over the years, and this is up there with the best, and maybe even THE best. Can't wait to re visit.

Friendly welcome on a cold raw day, sat beside a log fire with drinks and canapes at lunch time!Very tasty they were too.Just us for lunch, so no bother with the noise level after a couple of drinks!Tghe menu is compact, as is common with this type of establishment, but then, if the food is to be cooked there and then from scratch you cant offer the world with ten different variations on each course. The food was sublime, tasty, tender, well cooked and well presented but not fussy. The service was attentive but not intrusive and altogether a wonderful experience.Weare looking forward to our next time.

We have just had our second lunch at Checkers and again were bowled over by the quality. We have eaten in numerous Michelin Starred restaurants and the food at our lunch this week was up there with the best. The atmosphere and service is relaxed and unpretentious (unlike some other Michelin restaurants we have visited). Montgomery must be one of the loveliest small towns in Wales too, if the sun is shining you can't beat the experience.

Not sure what the person who wrote the review below had which they thought wasn't michelin star standard -we went on a Saturday evening and everything our party of 16 ordered (which between us must have been almost everything on the menu !), was sublime. The scallop starter, in particular ,was beyond perfection. The atmosphere is so relaxed and welcoming but the staff are very professional. It certainly matches up to the Michelin-star restaurants we've visited in London without the hefty price tag and the best thing about the Checkers is that there's not an ounce of pretentiousness in sight. Portion sizes are nice and chunky and the wine list is surprisingly fairly priced. You sort of feel like you're in the middle of nowhere but for me that just added to the charm. A truly lovely gem of a restaurant - well worthy of its Michelin- starred status.
