Our first visit here - but we will come again. The portions are good sized and the food was delicious. We had a cheese souffle and scrambled eggs with salmon for starters and we both had guinea fowl for the main course. The latter was superb - the breast still moist and stuffed with the confit leg. Wines were bough by the glass but it looks as though they have a decent choice of wines by the bottle. The staff were attentive and friendly despite the restaurant being almost full. The restaurant is in an old pub which has been attractively refurbished. Lots of natural light through big windows front and back.

Beautifully converted former pub with delightful atmosphere and attentive service. We have eaten here several times and always been impressed by the food. The salad of seared scallops is yummy, the pork belly great and the guinea fowl is excellent. It isn't cheap however - allow £35 per head for lunch which we wouldn't quibble at for an evening but seems a little expensive for lunch. All the same a really pleasant place to eat.

We have been looking forward to eating here for a while and at last a birthday was a very good reason to go . The food was imaginative , beautifully presented and very delicious. It was a refreshing change not to be rushed through the meal like many eating establishments tend to do and so we could really enjoy this special occasion. We both agreed that this was one of the best evening meals we have had for a very long time

To have such a high quality restaurant within a few miles of where we live in rural Powys is a delight, and yes, we can't wait to return

I was looking forward to eating at The Checkers as I'd been to their previous restaurant a year or so ago, and knew to expect food from the next dimension. I wasn't disappointed. But this time, everything had moved up a level. Of course the food.... but now the whole ambience... the building, the decor, the warmth of the staff...everything! And to take it from sublime to perfection was to enjoy one last glass of wine in the bar, and then wend our way upstairs to one of the beautifully furnished bedrooms for a dreamy night.
Well done to the Frenchman and The Farmer's Daughters..... I simply loved it!

Today turned out to be rather better than expected. OK, so the weather was a tad irritating but lunch was a revelation and more than made up for the showers. To be brief, we took lunch at the newly opened Checkers Restaurant in Broad Street, Montgomery.

It has been recently completely refurbished, with great care and attention to the detail of its grade II listed building status. The Chef, Stéphane, (the Frenchman from the ‘Frenchman & the Farmers daughters’) has put together an excellent top quality menu with something to suit all taste.

We began with a selection from the starters, including the Soufflé which I understand, was rather good, the recipient being too lost in her enjoyment of the dish to speak! I took the warm salad with poached egg, whilst others choose the scallops and the smoked salmon with scrabbled egg – all without exception, were excellent.

The mains have left me with little to say – we all went for the Lamb, thus I can only report on its admirable presentation and flavours, a ‘must have again’ (but not until we have sampled the rest on the menu!).

We all took a pudding, once again, excellent presentation and flavours.

Checkers is a truly admirable addition to a town that has sorely needed and deserved something of this quality, to match the wonderful character of the place. A select menu, with a relaxed and friendly service, in a simple, yet elegantly restored grade II listed building. I understand that they also have guest bedrooms.

Would I go back? Absolutely.
