I booked this a couple of weeks ago via the Internet. On arrival, the signs to reception weren't clear so we went through a door, straight into a 40th party! The lovely folks at the party showed us the way to the reception!
The lady on the desk gave us a warm smile and a lovely welcome. We all had a giggle about the 'gate crashing'.Our room was just off the reception area, over looking the garden. The room was very spacious.Twin beds just as we asked.Everything was spotless, nice comfy beds with plush duvets and one feather pillow and one polyester one.I'm sure if you wanted more of either then ,just ask.The bathroom was clean as a whistle, bath /shower were great.Shower soap in a dispenser on the wall ,along with a small bar of soap, shower gel, body lotion ,shower cap and a mini sewing kit.Lovely fluffy white towels.Plenty of tea ,coffee on the tray in the bedroom.Nice touch ,two chairs to sit in.Nine times out of ten ,in hotel rooms often we only have one ...err there are two of us.Do they want me to hang bat like off the ceiling!!
Settled in,unpacked and we went for a walk around the village. As its March and not much greenery is about ,but its still really nice .We went all down the little back streets, lots of cottages, two village shops, pharmacy, post office ,wine bar ,three pubs at least .The really old mill on the river. All very charming .It's so handy for Chester.I think a bus goes through every 15 min's.check the times but I'm sure it would be great to get to Chester ,rather than try to park in the city.
Right ,back to the hotel and we go to Oscars (in house restaurant) its very comfortable, modern without ripping the heart out of the hotel.Brown leather sofas in the bar area, then on the restaurant level, again maple coloured tables and chairs. We loved the fact that the tables weren't on top of each other.
The whole atmosphere was so relaxing, the staff are just so lovely but also very professional. We had the restaurant manager ,a young man called Alex on the bar and a lovely girl serving us.
As it was a Sunday night,we didn't expect a lot from the meal.WRONG,it was beautifully presented.I had tomato and mozzarella salad and my husband had soup, then we both had the steamed salmon, just perfect.Doesn't sound like a menu that you can get wrong but believe me, we have eaten around the world ,this meal was really delious. It was so pretty on the plate, really invited you to eat it!!

So to bed, after a really comfortable night ,then off to breakfast. We had undyed smoked haddock along with all the other goodies you wanted. The restaurant manager offered us papers to read after our breakfast,so we sat and read for a while before we packed.
It was such a relaxing hotel, you were made to feel like a valued customer and we will definitely be back.Lovey village but beware of the Golden Lion.Nice pub and I'm sure the food is lovely .It's a 5 min walk from the hotel.A large white wine and a coffee ,nearly £8 .We aren't mean but thought it was a bit much!

So all in all, this is a hotel with a heart, the recepitionist said she had been here 19 years and loved the place. We argree with her.The hotel is keeping up with modern trends regarding furniture ,pictures, lighting but still making you feel relaxed and very comfortable.

We will be back!

Room was good but towel rail heater wasn't working also couldn't adjust radiator in room. informed reception we had no heating as thermastat control wasn't working . They boosted temp. up in hallway so radiator was almost boiling we had no control so even with window open room was to warm. Thats the only complaint. Staff were fantastic professional but very friendly. I have stayed in much more expensive hotels with fine dining rosettes and had much inferior food. So I can not for the life of me understand why this hotel hasn't got a single rosette, the chef is a gem

Nice food, but do not order gluten free, i ordered a gluten free meal in advance(in one of their christmas parties) basically what i got was a bit of veg, two roast potatoes and 2 silces of turkey - no gravy - no sauceage (easily obtainable) no bacon (which is gluten free) complained by email and never got a reply - they promised on the phone that it was not a problem, but served the meal and said 'sorry no gravy' how difficult is it for a chef to make gravy with flour!!! will not visit them again on principle

Hotel had good parking, was fairly quiet and rooms reasonably comfortable. Bathroom was very large, with narrow bath and shower over - design layout needs improving. Beds were comfortable but not made up properly.
Food in the restaurant wasn't too bad, but buffet breakfast poor.
The staff were friendly.

I wrote a review about this hotel in September 2008 and wrote about the lovely time we had there. Unfortunately our recent stay was not as good! We stayed the same weekend for our anniversary and to go to the races. This time we took two other couples with us. I booked the rooms 12 months ago asking for 3 executive rooms at £95 each and i also asked if we could have the same room we had last time. On arrival we just put our bags in the room and came straight out as we had a minibus waiting to take us into Chester for the races. We returned at around 7.15pm to find the following wrong with our room; toilet had NOT been cleaned it had sick around the bowl from the last guest, bathroom floor not swept or mopped, carpet not hoovered as we found a sweet wrapper, a toe or finger nail and other bits, tea and coffee tray not filled up correctly, a carrier bag in the hairdryer draw, on the plus side a pound coin. I went down to reception and told the young girl there. She said that the housekkepers had finished for the night and just gave me an apology. ON departure it was another receptionist so i told her, again i just got an apology and she said that the receptionist should have come and cleaned it. We were not offered another room as the hotel was full with a wedding party and were not offered any kind of refund.
Last year the hotel was owned by Best Western but that doesnt seem to be the case now. The food however was very nice and the restaurant manager was very eager to please as he was last year.
We were going to make this a annual trip but next year i think we will be staying at the hotel next door that is run by Best Western.
Very dissapointed!
