Dolbrodmaeth Riverside Hotel
Reviewed September 14, 2009

This hotel is in a spectactular location but is in need of major refurbishment and cleaning.
Arrived on Saturday for one night and emailed prior to arriving asking for an early breakfast on departure which didn't happen.
Only two staff working who seemed to have been abandoned and couldn't find anybody to serve in the bar. Ate in the restaurant as nowhere else for miles around. This was a big mistake as the food was dire and we couldn't eat it.Both staff who were having a bash at the cooking were very apologetic though.
Room was like a throwback to the 70s with really tired furnishing and grubby carpets. Bathroom was minging and I guarantee they haven't had a towel stolen in decades.
The whole place is dark, unwelcomimg and dirty. We couldn't wait to get out in the morning. Breakfast was ok but the orange juice had been watered down beyond recognition. Cooked breakfast was tasty but not enough to keep a two year old going, and we are not big eaters but I was starving.
Then to finish off the manager appeared when we checked out and lied stating he had asked the kitchen staff to come in early regarding our request for early breakfast which she completely denied. Shame as this hotel has potential. I will never go for the quaint looking hotel again without checking reviews. I would rate this on a par with hotels I stayed at as a student, except they were cheap. Do not go here looking for a romantic weekend away, only stay if your car breaks down and all else fails!!!!

Just returned from a visit to this hotel, it is in a lovely location even though it was raining the views were perfect, however, the hotel itself is really tired and in need of a major refurbishment, the entrance is dark and unwelcoming, we were given room11 which is on the ground floor by reception, you have to keep curtains drawn as it overlooks the path up to the entrance of the hote, the room smelt "doggy" and needed a good airing.. the breakfast was good but the cups and glasses were an assortment, the lady on the table next to me had a Winnie the Pooh glass for her breakfast orange, not what you would have expected for a hotel charging £70+ per room per night.. the lady that served breakfast told us that the proprietor was selling the property and it seems he has almost given up on it, he was very laid back, almost rude, there was no welcome, no information about breakfast times etc.. only given this when we asked... it's a shame because this could be a little gold mine if a bit of money was spent decorating and brightening it up...

I arrived here late with colleagues on business. The proprietor opened the bar for us and was very welcoming, he went out of his way to be helpful. The room was a bit dated, the bathroom could really have done with replacing but everything was clean and the room was warm.
Breakfast was excellent and afforded us the view we'd missed by arriving so late the night before. I watched a kingfisher from my breakfast table and if I'd been up a little earlier I'm told that I may even have seen an otter. It really is a fantastic location.

Me and my husband have just come back from a stay at this hotel. We were extremely pleased with the accomodation, the beautiful setting and the friendliness of the staff (especially the owner).

The hotel was warm, cosy and had a homely feel and I would def recommend this hotel to friends.

The hotel is close to many local towns and is a great base for a walking holiday too with lots of fantastic walks/climbs nearby.

The place itself is perfect... well kept, secluded, with great views, next to a river. The ideal getaway. We arrived just after they'd finished serving dinner, yet they got a couple of meals together for us.

The only problems we encountered were;
1. You have to leave your key with reception whenever you go out, which is fine, except that no-one was around when we came back, so had to wander around to try and find people.
2. The room hadn't been cleaned properly before we got there, with pistachio nuts on the floor, and shampoo packaging in the floor of the shower. There were no towels provided either, until we aksed for them.
3. We were overcharged. Pre-booked at £72pn, and ended up having to pay £89pn

Having said all that though, the b&b is great. The couple that own it are as friendly as you could get, just very slightly too laid back.

Probably wouldn't return, as there are pklenty of other places to visit.

Nice, family run hotel. Very friendly, lady at breakfast particularly helpful. Just outside Dinas Mawddwy, and if you want a taste of true Welsh village life, go to the LLew Coch in Dinas Mawddwy, this is an area where the Welsh language still comes first and visitors should not be surprised or, even more oddly, upset when Welsh is spoken around them- This is the everyday language of the local people and not something put on fotrisitors. Enjoy the difference!!
