I have just walked the WHW and this was one of the best places we stayed. It had the most comfortable bed (albeit on the 3rd storey bunk) and the fresh cooked Spaghetti Carbonara was delicous.
I have read many of the negative reviews and all of them could be true. The owners are both "characters" and if you do something to annoy them, you will know about it. However, this is their home!
If you like staying in bunkhouses and are reasonably considerate, you should have no problems. The payback is you get to stay in a unique location and there is something magical about seeing the trains go past while you are having dinner.

I stayed here in 2009 with 2 other people while doing the West Highland Way.

Helen and Steve were friendly and accommodating to are needs.

The accommodation and facilities were clean.

We ordered breakfast the night before, I had bacon and pancakes which set me up nicely for another day of walking.

Arrived a bit late, tired and wet. The hosts were absolutely lovely - charming and funny. The beds warm and comfortable - I loved the curtains around my bed - gave privacy and meant I could read at night without the light disturbing others.
This is a hostel - but it's a gem of a hostel and I look forwards to returning.

Come on people - some of the reviews here surely miss the point. This is an extraordinary place, IN an extraordinary place, lacking some frills but with a wealth of plus points. We (1 middle-aged bloke, 2 women, 1 teenage girl, 1 largish dog) stayed for 3 days, mid-July, in both torrential rain and unexpected heatwave, as part of a Highland walking holiday. We're not hardcore Highland-Wayers but we have stayed in some of the world's fanciest hotels and some of the most basic, grungiest hostels. It holds up well - more than well. Yes, there was dust under the beds, the bathroom was a tad depressing, & the owners would prefer you don't check in until 5pm. But prices are good, the triple bunks are comfortable, the showers & radiators work, the towels are soft and clean, & the food (by musician & former bistro-owner Helen) is really, really good. The owners are considerate, informative, funny, & hugely entertaining. And you're staying in a railway station! You're eating breakfast & dinner looking out at trains & passengers coming & going! Steam trains, sometimes! The Royal train, occasionally. If you arrive and leave by rail, as we did, it takes less than a minute to get a rucksack from hostel to train. And retired-railwayman Steve can give you chapter & verse on any train you need to use, anywhere in Scotland - probably in Europe. What's not to like?

IN GENERAL: Stay at the West Highland Way Sleeper and not at the hotel.

Helen en Steve are both very friendly and helpful. (++)
Dinner is cheaper here than in the hotel and very nice too. (+)
Breakfast is poor and scarce. (--)

We sleeped in bunks with 6 persons.
Beds are good, but the room itself is rather small. (-)
Door to private bathroom with shower and toilet. (+)

In the common room you can get free coffee/tea yourself. (+)
At arrival we got free biscuits. There are books to read. (+)
Parlor games like Monopoly at your disposition. (+)

TIP
f you got the time, climb up the gap between the two mountains.
At the top you get a stunning views and forceful winds.
Ask Steve for more information.

This is a basic bunkhouse, it is clean and warm so i guess thats all you need. The set up of bunks is a disaster. they are 3 high and have very little room to manouvere in and out of them. I would strongly advise booking bottom bunks in advance.

My boyfriend and I stayed here whilst completing the West Highland Way as it was recommended by friends.
When we arrived, we were amazed by the great location and the warm welcome we got from the owners. Although this is a hostel/bunkhouse dinner is offered, which we declined (too knackered after walking) and i had a lot of concern from the owners that I was eating enough on the walk!!
I loved the bunks with the curtains around them, our room was full, but i managed a great night sleep and loved the privacy of my own little 'cabin'. The showers were great and all facilities were spotless.
Great choices for breakfast and a good hearty packed lunch set us off the next day.
I would 100% recommend this place, and certainly plan a return visit. It was my favourite stop on the way!
