“Fantastic place to stay!”
Reviewed July 16, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

This is a lovely place to stay with all the facilities you could wish for plus extra touches. We didn't have great weather during our stay but it was lovely to come back from a day out to such a comfortable and well equipped rental. Extra comfy beds. The perfect place to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. the

“Best holiday cottage ever!”
Reviewed October 14, 2015 for a stay in October 2015

This was our first visit to this area of Scotland. We chose this cottage because it looked lovely in the photos and was in the right location for places of interest. It is the best holiday cottage we have ever stayed in. It was beautifully decorated and had everything provided including comfy bed, warm rooms thanks to underfloor heating and the very efficient log burner, washing machine/dryer, dishwasher, plenty of crockery and utensils, even hot water bottles!. It was more like a home than a holiday let and we loved it. Jeanette and Nigel have obviously taken great care to create this haven. We only stayed a week but needed 2 or 3 to see everything. We will definitely visit again.

“allanton mill- all you could wish for in a holiday house!”

We stayed at Allanton Mill for 2 weeks at the end of August 2015. It was our first time staying in Dumfries, and we chose this holiday rental as it looked like it was in a great location, and was just what we were looking for. Allanton mill is located behind the owners Jeanette and nigels house, but is completely private. The house is so beautiful, as you come up the drive you see the house, surrounded by flowers, and amazing views over fields. When we arrived we had a wonderful and most welcome bottle of wine and shortbread too! The house is probably the most well equipped, excellent place we have ever stayed in, The owners really have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable. There is an excellently equipped kitchen, with tea, coffee, milk in the fridge, as well as a microwave, cooker, and all of the utensils you need, even a washing machine! The kitchen leads through to a very comfortable lounge, with tv, dvd player, log fire, music system, and amazing and varied collection of books about Scotland and loads of leaflets about places to go. There is a shower room off the kitchen, with a big shower, then at the other end of the lounge, one bedroom on the same level with an amazingly comfortable bed, and great views over woodland, and another bedroom down the stairs, which has its own balcony, where we sat with drinks, listening to the burn at the bottom of the garden. There is a hairdryer, iron, even hot water bottles in the cupboards! There is another side seating area, with comfortable chairs too. It was lovely to wander round the huge garden, and was so peaceful and quiet. Jeanette the owner was lovely, (so was miffy the cat!)The house is very well located for visiting places, Dumfries was only 10-15 mins away, with a big Tesco and lidl, and in the area there are amazing walks, castles, and great places to visit. A fantastic 5 star place to stay.

“Fantastic cottage, great location!”

Our trip to Allanton Mill was great - the perfect blend of exploring, country walks and cosy evenings in by the log burner. The cottage has been been fitted out to a very high standard - everything is top quality and we found everything we needed for our stay there.

Jeannette and Nigel are perfect hosts - the log store was well stocked and they were on hand when we needed pointing in the right direction! There are also loads of information leaflets and books in the cottage containing info on what to do and where to go.

I'd definitely recommend Allanton Mill Cottage to anyone thinking about going - it's a fantastic cottage in a great location with lovely surroundings. We opted for a chilled out break and it was perfect - but there are also plenty of things to do near by for those looking for a bit more action and adventure.

Thank you Jeannette and Nigel, we hope to be back soon!

“A very special place”
Reviewed August 12, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

Allanton Mill is a beautifully restored property and a very special place for a holiday. The downstairs bedroom with its large balcony and french windows letting in the sound of the waterfall in the glen was quite magical. The gardens are lovely and extensive, we were lucky enough to have great weather to enjoy BBQs and eating outside every evening.
The location is very quiet, with no shortage of interesting places around to visit.

“Absolutely Perfect”

We booked Allanton Mill Cottage not only for our honeymoon but for the wedding itself. The garden is absolutely stunning and we couldn't have found a better spot for the ceremony than around the old millstone down by the stream. We then had a fantastic reception for our small group of family and close friends in the upper garden. The sun was out, the views were stunning and we couldn't have wished for a better setting.

Jeanette and Nigel are consummate hosts and were always on hand, if required, to ensure our week at Allanton Mill Cottage was flawless.

The cottage is so peaceful you could be forgiven for thinking you were in the middle of nowhere yet Dumfries is only 8 miles away and the market town of Thornhill even closer. What surprised us is how much there is to see and do in the area. The biking and walking trails of Ae Forest are just up the road, with similar also available in Dalbeattie Forest. Watching the Red Kite feeding is a must if you like the thought of seeing around 100 birds of prey circling above you and swooping down on a feeding table just in front of you.

The cottage itself is nicely furnished and extremely clean and comfortable with a well-equipped kitchen, underfloor heating and a wood burning stove. The bottom bedroom has a balcony overlooking the lower garden and stream and is perfect for both breakfasts and evening relaxation, but there's also a BBQ area and other seating areas around the garden from which to take in the views of open countryside.

Our week was over far too quickly so we will definitely be returning in the future to do all the things we missed this time round.

If you like a holiday with plenty to see and do but a tranquil haven set in beautiful gardens to return to each evening then you won't find better than Allanton Mill Cottage.
