“Nice views”
Reviewed March 17, 2013 via mobile

Had an early dinner here after a days walking, the guy behind the bar was nice & friendly, he also took our food order & cooked our meal. we were the only ones in so we sat next to the lovely coal fire, it's a nice pub & the views onto Ullswater are amazing. We both had the Cumberland sausage which came with mashed potatoe, nice crunchy veg & onion rings on top, the sausage was nice & everything was piping hot but the mash & gravy could of done with a bit more taste. We would go back.

Hi Richard P,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review about your recent visit at the Brackenrigg Inn. It is always nice to hear that you enjoyed your stay and also that you made the most of your time in the area. Unfortunately some of the bathrooms are fairly small in the Inn as we are a very old building.
It is nice to see that you have favourite rooms and by all means ensure that you request one of them when making a future booking.....
We look forward to welcoming you back again in the future.

Kind Regards & Best Wishes

We booked a table in the restaurant on our arrival, however, we were the only one's booked in so decided to eat in the bar. There are no doors to the bar and anyone entering the Inn has an option to turn immediatly left for the bar, walk forward to the recption and either turn left again for the bar or right for the restaurant/breakfast room or the stairs to the rooms, The front door has a slow return and lets cold air in that neither the 2 small radiators or the open fire in the bar can cope with, hence four groups including our selves ate our meal's mostly wearing our coats, even those next to the fire. The waiting and bar staff were very friendly, and the food, although a bit pricey was very good, a down side was the special's board, which remaind the same for the three nights and limited the menu some what. The 2nd night we ate out but came back for a drink in the bar and although we sat next to the fire we were still cold, the third day we went to a pub in Pooley Bridge to watch the Rugby as the Brackenrigg does not have a TV in the bar and stayed to eat, not even returning to have a night cap, which was a pity, because the bar staff at the Brackenrigg are very talkative and a good laugh. Cooked breakfast was very good, the full breakfast was huge while the Haddock, Kippers etc where very tasty, the cereal selection was standard including a small tray of fruit, walnuts raisins yoghurts etc to make a muesli, down side, the room was chilly every morning. While it must be hard to keep the everyone happy with so many aspects of running a hotel, I'm sure most people would rather be to hot in their room and open a window if needed, than freezing cold as we were the first and second nights. The 1st morning we asked for a heater as the heating in the room goes off at midnight and the room cooled rapidly to being unpleasant, the wind whistling through the windows at night would have been rather quaint if we were warm, but it became irritating the colder we got. Unfortunately we were only provided with a thin throw. In bed you could stay warm but the room tempreture was such that your face, especially your nose and anything else that strayed from under the duvet were freezing to a point of constantly waking up. We solved this for the third night with a cheap fan heater from Penrith. The shower room did what was required from it, but again was uncomfortably cold through the night or first thing in the morning. The best thing about the room were the spectacular views accross the lake to the snow covered mountains. All in all, I would stay here again, but only in the summer and I would dine again and probably enjoy the experince a whole lot more when warm.

Dear lesley-anne k, Thank you for your review, we do value your feedback. I regret that your stay with us coincided with the coldest weekend of the winter when we experienced sub zero temperatures. We will review our strategy for dealing with such exceptional circumstances. Best Regards, John.

Thank you for looking after our party so well. The staff were friendly and the food excellent, especially for such a large group. Our room was very nice, although we did get an upgrade to one with a picture window. The views over Ullswater are wonderful.

We stayed here for 4 nights from 29th December 2012 and checked out on 2nd January 2013. We booked the new years eve package for 2 nights with 2 nights at a different tariff added on and received an email requesting a deposit which was duly sent and the balance was to be paid upon checking out with any extras incurred to be added on the room (drinks etc).

I cannot fault the food the whole time we were there. The new years eve dinner was 7 courses! Every course was superb. The Inn sources local Lakeland produce such as Holker estate duck and Cartmel valley smoke house smoked peppered mackerel. The breakfasts are cooked for you not buffet style with congealed scrambled egg. Previous reviewers have commented they thought it expensive. I think the food here is way above normal pub grub and worth paying for.
The rooms, we were in room 1, clean, great view of the lake but shower room was very small especially for my husband. I know it's an old coaching inn and they have to plan the rooms around a quirky layout so if we stay here again (more than likely) we would book one of the rooms in the stable block where I think we might get a bigger bathroom and sitting room.

The very friendly barmen Iain and Stefan and the rest of the hard working waiting staff, Roxy, sorry I didn't get any more names, together with excellent food and a big roaring fire in the bar made the 4 day break great.

However, when we came to check out-we were presented with a room account we didn't understand (we had paid cash at the bar for all wine and drinks). We thought all we had to pay was the balance on the confirmation email. None of the prices on the room account matched the prices on the confirmation email and the explanation at reception was just as woolly. We all stood for about 6-7 minutes trying to work out and understand why the bill was £126 more than the email. We thought based on the confirmation email our food was included for the 2 extra nights but it was added onto the room account. It does state in the email that if staying on a bed and breakfast basis, which we were, they allocate £24.95 per person for dinner and anything over would be charged. That's fair enough. We paid £498.00 for 4 nights. The Brackenrigg email is very misleading stating after we payed a deposit of £249.00 there was a total amount of £249.00 to be paid on day of departure. We paid up, after £40.00 was taken off but it did put a downer on the break. If the management can throw some light on what went wrong I'll be pleased to hear it.

Room Tip: Choose the stable block, more space and probably bigger bathrooms. You will have to come out every m...

Dear LBagsOne
Thank you for your comments. We are so pleased to hear that your New Year was enjoyable with ourselves.
As you are aware, our Chef prides himself on using locally sourced fresh produce and it is much appreciated that your meals and breakfasts were well received.
Being a traditional Coaching Inn we do have limited space in the en-suites of the bedrooms in the main house, but the ground floor suites by the car-park do have the sitting area and larger bathrooms so please do not hesitate to request one of these rooms.
With regards to the confusion about the confirmation letter and final bill on check out, we offer our most sincere apologies, as that is not our normal standard. I will look into how this has happened and contact you direct.
Kind Regards

Lynsey
