“Wonderful staff”
Reviewed February 12, 2010

We stayed for a two night break booked through travelzoo. Wonderful staff couldnt do enough for you, hotel a lovely georgian house, superb views, log fires, cosy lounges.

We ate dinner the first night, very good if a little OTT, haute cuisine. Regency dining room was lovely.Breakfast both days very good with lots of choice.

Had a classic bedroom, quite large with a king size bed, very nice furniture and fittings. Bathroom good size. Everywhere spolessly clean.

Didnt manage the free boat trip as we didnt fancy 2 hours on a boat in February, although the weather had been quite kind to us.

The afternoon cream tea was lovely, served by the Manager, who was very pleasant as were all the staff.

Ate the second nigh at a lovely little italian in Penrith center, cant rememer the name but quite good.

All in all a very enjoyable break, especially if you can get a deal. Would recommend.

We had our winter wedding at Leeming House and took over the hotel for private use. The location is absolutely stunning, even in the middle of winter. We have stayed in a few places round Ullswater and Leeming has the best views we have seen down to the Lake. The hotel decor is tastefully done, with a good standard of rooms. One of the best things about Leeming is that it has a variety of rooms such as the drawing room, library etc which are great to hideaway in with the papers and tea / G&T! Beautiful gardens. The wedding suite was exceptional. The standard of food for the wedding breakfast was very good. We found that the staff and general manager at Leeming were very helpful, especially in the planning stages, nothing was too much trouble for them. They went out of their way to help us, for example, they found us a hog roast company to do the evening reception buffet. On the day itself, any minor glitches were smoothed out quickly and without us even noticing. Credit should be given to the manager who stayed up till the early hours keeping the bar open for some of our more “lively” guests, we really appreciated it. Many of our guests filled in thank you cards for the hotel as they had such a great time. All in all, a wonderful experience. Would recommend it for a romantic break – we are likely to return!

We enjoyed a fabulous five night stay, including New Year's Eve at this wonderfully secluded hotel on the lake.

The feature room we stayed in had a great view (see pic), the bed was enormous and very comfy, and apart from a little noise through the connecting door to the next room of a crying baby at 2am for one night, we hardly heard anyone else at all.

The food in the restaurant was very imaginatively presented and beautifully cooked.

The entire staff managed to achieve that rare balance of being a visible when you needed them and entirely invisible when you didn't. At times we felt we were staying in our own private house!

New Year's Eve was very well stage managed by the venue - they even managed to make it snow during the fireworks at midnight!

Can't really fault the place and worth every penny of the considerable sum we paid to stay there..

We'll definitely be back - in April I believe.. Can't wait...

On entering the Hotel we could smell the log fires burning a really welcoming smell on a cold january day.
The room we were given was superb, clean fresh, plenty of space, quality fittings and furniture.. A fully tiled en-suite with toiletries and huge bath towels etc. bath and shower.
Beverage facilities are provided along with biscuits.
The bed was extremely comfortable and large.
Dinner was an absolute delight, the only problem was we could have chosen all the menu.
The food was served in the large beautifully fitted- out restaurant and was absolutely delicious, superbly presented and brought to us by very obliging staff. We chose to have afternoon tea also which again was delicious only this time it was served in the exquisitely furnished lounge and beside one of the roaring log fires. There are two .Lots of chairs and comfortable couches to sit on with lovely country views from here. The grounds of this super hotel which are in 22 acres or thereabouts reach down to the edge of Ullswater and provide a pleasant easy walk.
We were offered the facility of a trip on the Lake all included in our hotel price but declined,- It was Mid January. Other guests seemed to enjoy the experience..The Manager was very helpful and took time to tell us the history behind the origins of the Hotel even though he was busy. A Civil ceremony Wedding took place while we were there and the Hotel was full but the service, the staff ,the food remained the same throughout our stay,Fantastic. All in all a very enjoyable two night stay and we are planning to return when the rhodendrons in the grounds are in bloom.

Booked through an online bargain deal ( although have stayed with MacDonald Hotels before ) and could not fault hotel in any way. The hotel was very quiet but we were staying Sunday and Monday. Had a lovely room overlooking the lake - a perfect backdrop. Like one of the other reviewers boat trip on one of the Ullswater 'Steamers' was included. We went on the boat to Howtown and then walked back to Glenridding.- approx 2-3 hours walk. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant on the first evening and the food was excellent as was the service. Breakfast is fresh, varied and plentiful with no request being of any trouble to the waiting staff. Would definitely go back again especially if a similar deal was available. Would have cost as much to go to a Travel Inn!!!

Spent 3 nights between Christmas & New Year 2009
I booked and paid extra for a Feature Room, but the room shown on the website was not what we got. That room's a suite - but the hotel puts the picture in the Feature Room section (feels like misrepresentation to me). We got a room identical to the Classic Room (cheapest room) but with a balcony & a lake view. Hotel confirmed we did have a feature room. Feature room is also sold as having an "extra large bathroom" but ours was just normal size.
The view of lake was obscured in part by trees.
The far end of car park was used as a dump complete with old mattress.
Internet £5 an hour and then only from lounge not room (feels like a rip off to me)
Good points - stunning remote location which could be a problem if you wanted to eat elsewhere & have a drink with your meal as there's nothing nearby within walking distance. Good breakfast & helpful staff.
In summary - what was supposed to be a very special break, turned out to be just average for the price. I was disappointed.
