Just back from a too brief stay at The Rampsbeck. It's been a few years since we last visited and if anything, it is even better than before. We were fortunate to be allocated the Elderbeck room (thank you Sonya), which was comfortable and spacious and has fantastic views over the gardens and the lake beyond.
All of the property is well maintained and spotlessly clean - a credit to the housekeeping staff who often get overlooked! The gardens and grounds are also incredibly well managed - I've no idea how many gardening staff are involved but they too do a wonderful job.
Dinner was of the highest standard and very tastefully presented, and relaxing in the lounge afterwards with coffee and a drink was a real treat.
The staff work really hard to make you welcome and get the balance just right. Can't fault it at all.

Dear Sprayco,
Thank you for posting such lovely comments on Tripp Advisor after your recent return visit to us, don't leave it so long in-between visits next time!!
The team at Rampsbeck, as per norm, have been shown your review and are delighted by your comments. Regarding the Gardener, we only have the one, John, who really is truly dedicated to his job, and doesn't it show!
Thanks again for all of your comments, we look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future!
Best wishes
Sonya

Having used Secret Escapes for the first time I was not disappointed with the Rampsbeck experience. This is a hotel I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a special treat: luxury and space in the bedroom, bathroom to have a dance in and a fine dining experience to challenge Master chef!! And the service was exceptional. Each and every member of staff was friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back to this lovely and charming hotel on Ullswater.

Had dinner here with a friend and have to say excellent. The food and service were impeccable from the greeting to the fair well. They obviously take great pride in what they do.The whole experience was a treat and when you arrive and see the beautifully kept gardens you expect things to be of a high standard and it certainly didn't disappoint.

Stunning location and influenced by previous reviews we chose this hotel as a stop on the way south from a Scottish holiday. The hotel and gardens' have been 'interiorly decorated' with beige swags and drapes. Orange bedding begonias.and geraniums in an established garden with grass immaculately cut. The hotel seemed good value for B and B and the rooms are very comfortable.
The dinner set menu (no a' la carte offered) at nearly £60 composed of the tiniest portion of canapes I have ever seen, followed an egg cup of onion soup, large bread basket (thank goodness), farmed smoked salmon with 6 -8 grains of caviar and some cucumber, mains 5 pieces of probably 'sous vide' meat in various forms with small portion of accompanying beans. For pudding a small bun with some carrot shreds ( Ottolenghi it aint!..look at his recipe, you need one) accompanied with a teaspoonful of carrot sorbet.and some raw carrot garnish. Sorry this is not of a standard that one expects at this price. Service from pleasant but not sufficiently trained waitresses was not adequately supervised, at this price one does not expect to be asked as to whether the glasses need to be changed with a new wine. No senior person was supervising the dining room when we went in for our 'slot' at 8.30. I do not enjoy large gastronomic dinners but came away feeling hungry, their portions are 'measly'.
Breakfast service the next morning was similarly disappointing with every item having to be ordered individually, cheap yoghurt and muesli, varying degrees of competence with the sausage, cold tomatoes and one slice of bacon. Lack of blinds in the dining room meant that the sunshine on our table had been overlooked by the interior decorators and shutting the curtains was not an option.
Check out bills were not correct and we had to rectify them with subsequent phone calls, which we did but at no point was any enquiry made as to how we enjoyed out stay?
This is somewhere you want to like but our group felt that there was no generosity in the hospitality or sense of love for the place. When you drive out the hotel sign obsucures your view of the oncoming traffic...sums it up really.Should work but didn't for us.

Dear eyequackess,
Thank you for posting comments on Trip Advisor after you and your family stayed with us recently.
I am saddened to read that we did not live up to your expectations and for that I apologise.
The team at Rampsbeck work very hard to ensure that all guest's enjoy their time with us, and I am sure that you, from reading previous reviews, do acknowledge that we do normally live up to these expectations, we are however only human, we do make mistakes but I think the main point is that we learn from them.
Should you wish to discuss any further points please do not hesitate to call us direct and a member of the management will be happy to talk to you,
Kind regards
Sonya

Fantastic hotel with beautiful decor, set right on the lake with manicured gardens which are beautiful to walk around. Food was top notch and service was also very good. Plenty of places nearby to hike in or explore. Highly recommended and would go back!
