Friendly, pleasant spot. Good food, and one of the best steaks that have ever had. Value for money as well.

Visited The Major all 3 nights that we stayed at the fantastic B&B just 2 blocks up. Had dinner there 2 nights but spent all 3 afternoons having a few drinks, watching the cricket and resting up after doing a lot of walking in and around the lovely township. The owner of the pub was away while we were there, but the staff were doing a wonderful job in manning the place and keeping up the standards all round, from bar to food service and as newbies we felt made really welcome by Jo and Lisa in particular, not to mention Charlie the chocolate X-lab who vets everyone that walks in the door.

We were looking for somewhere to have a cooked lunch as part of a day trip playing on the excellent East Lancashire Railway. I found this pub on TripAdvisor, so we gave it a try - and we weren't disappointed. Excellent food, friendly efficicent service, good value.

This is my local pub and I am just sorry that I haven't visited it earlier. Tried the roast beef Sunday lunch and it was very good, plenty of veg which was not overcooked and not frozen stuff either, this all went down very well with the beef ,yorkshire pud and roast spuds plus a big gravy boat just for one. My friends had the cheese and onion pie with chips and mushy peas, big portions but we all had clean plates at the end! Nice to see proper black pepper and salt grinders on the table. Very friendly staff and landlord, but there are possibly as many dogs as cutomers which some people may not like when eating.

Having read a lot of reviews on here about this place we decided to give it a try and we were not dissapointed, 7pm on a Thursday night and the place was buzzing, I think they have a lot of regulars who keep coming back and who can blame them, friendly staff/owners, fantastic food, reasonably priced and real ales, I haven't had Tribute on draught since we were in Cornwall last year. Cheese Pie to die for and my wife's lasagne was as good as any Italian restaurant for miles, cant wait to go back. Good home cooked food and huge portions.
