“Variable, expensive for the size of portions”
Reviewed June 28, 2013 via mobile

Had three courses each and of the six dishes three were very good, three not so good, so quite variable. Starters excellent beetroot soup but soggy and floppy whitebait that you couldn't dip into the mayo, mains excellent makerel but only one fillet and a few spuds is small portion for the price, cheese and onion plate pie was ok, desserts, Manchester tart nice but not how we remember them and orange posset from the specials board the best dish of the night, absolutely gorgeous. Overall we would probably go back, but it is expensive and you have to hope you choose one of the better dishes rather than one of the distinctly average ones.

Hi Kit N Pud

Thanks for your review. The beetroot in the soup was homegrown, so really glad you enjoyed it!
I just find it a shame that you didn't let one of the team know about the whitebait, as this seems to be the only tangible concern with the meal and we could have quickly put that right for you!

On the portion sizes it wasn't quite just a fillet of fish and a few spuds... Line caught fish is better for the environment and comes at a premium and seasonal Jersey Royals and fennel, are again in your high-end produce category. These cost more to purchase in the first place. This is reflected in the pricing structure. Our food is generally hearty and for those with a bigger appetite, we have a selection of side orders to accompany, which our staff team offer. Maybe next time you should talk through your choices if you have a larger appetite.

You mention the Manchester Tart not being like you remember. That is because it is a Manchester Pudding Tart- our own version of a cross between Manchester Tart and Manchester Pudding, so it is quite different to a traditional Manchester Tart. Our staff would have happily explained that to you and how we have adapted the dish from the two!

Thanks again for taking the time to feed back.

“Makes eating out worthwhile...”
Reviewed June 23, 2013 via mobile

What an amazing find!! I originally called and asked for a table for two people at 4pm and was unfortunately told 7pm was the earliest. I knew this was a good sign so I requested a table in the bar if necessary. The lady on the phone duly obliged and told me she could get us a table for 4.15 on a high table. (When we arrived they actually gave us a lovely table next to the window). There is no price you can put on real quality food and great service. Nothing gives me more pleasure than eating in an establishment when you know the staff and owners really care about the food and their customers. Fresh, well cooked food arrived in abundance, from my selection of local bangers to my roast Sunday dinner, the food was a true pleasure and the taste of a fresh rhubarb mojito just topped off a wonderful experience. If you're looking for a 2 for 1 pub grub/carvery Sunday meal served up in lukewarm conditions with over boiled veggies than stay away, this place serves quality, home grown fresh food and is worth every penny. Thank you to the staff and management for restoring our faith in local establishments that don't charge the earth for real quality... A shining example of how to do it right!

Hi Matt,

Your review really sums up what we care most about- good quality, locally sourced, fresh food, with friendly and attentive service. We agree that we are not about huge portions, but offer great value across 3 courses. As you rightly put it Matt, if you are after a cheap meal, then carry on elsewhere... we are not for you, as we do not agree with importing meat in bulk from South America, or buying in frozen meals. We look to invest back into our own local economy by sourcing local.

Hope to see you soon.

Hi Frank- thanks for your review. We offer great value for money with our set Sunday lunch starting at £14.95 per person, so assuming you meant £26.00 per person having enjoyed our fine cask ales and some decent plonk to accompany your meal from our great value wine list, we thank you for your review!

Best wishes and see you soon
