Took the girlfriend here tonight (for the first time) for her birthday after hearing nothing but good reviews about the place. I can't fault the food or the service... in particular the black pudding bacon and mushroom starter was stunning !!! But all I can say is I think there should be a divide between the bar and dining room because a really good evening was in my opinion spoilt by the fact that all we could hear were silly loud teenage drunks at the bar

Not a gastro pub but the food was well cooked, well presented and well served. Steak was cooked medium rare with no blood but still pink and the partridge was a seasonal treat that was well cooked but not dry.

Drinks were kept topped up by the attentive waiting staff.

An exceptional pub meal.

We went to this pub with friends several years ago and had one of the best pub meals we had ever had. When the opportunity came up to go back this year we were really looking forward to it as a result. Sadly we were slightly disappointed as the menu and overall food quality was not what it had been. Having said that, it was still a very decent pub with nice food, and if we had just stumbled onto it without expectations we would have been very happy with it.
The good parts: great local beer at a decent price; a nice menu with plenty of choice; a friendly atmosphere where those popping in for a drink get equal billing to those coming to eat (which is increasingly rare in foodie pubs these days). Good food (although a stew with a lid is NOT a pie!) and a really pleasant atmosphere to sit and while away an evening (or a Sunday afternoon).
The not so good parts: service isn't great - the waitresses were huddled around their station when we arrived, backs to the customers, so we had to wait for bar staff to tell them we had booked a table and be taken over. The waitresses were then not vigilant on clearing plates and checking on us for food and drinks for the rest of the evening. They were busy however and they were friendly and efficient when they were with us. Also, there was a special menu on for British Food Fortnight, which was only vaguely mentioned on the blackboard, and was hidden at the end of the menu behind the children's meals, where you would never think to look. It was not mentioned by the waitresses as a special either! This was a shame as it looked like a really good menu when we found it - after our main meal while looking for desserts.
All in all, a decent pub that we would be happy to go back to, but did not live up to its previous highs.

Service was excellent - cooked to order and served with a smile. Pheasant was within easy reach of The Limes in Wellington where we were staying, and had been well recommended.
