“Wow what a location and friendly staff too”
Reviewed March 20, 2014

My extended family and I stayed at the White Horse Hotel for a get together and surprise birthday party for my dad. The hotel is in a fantastic beach-side location with uninterrupted views over the English Channel. The car park is big and parking is free for residents. A warm welcome was offered on arrival, check-in was simple and efficient. Rooms vary in size, but beds are huge and very comfortable. Housekeepers obviously work hard to ensure everywhere is spotlessly clean. The waiting staff and bar staff are cheery and friendly. All the staff were helpful, nothing appears to be too much trouble. Décor and carpets are showing signs of age (as mentioned in other reviews) but furniture offers ample space for clothes and luggage. The hotel offers plenty of amenities to make for a perfect stay. The menu offers a wide choice from light snacks to a full a la carte range and grills. We all enjoyed the food, which was tasty and very well-priced. Breakfast offers a really great start to the day with a cold buffet as well as a choice of traditional dishes and specialities. What more could you ask for? We wont be waiting for another birthday to return, we'll definitely be back.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are definitely worth the extra A regular local bus service means you can explore and...

Living near to Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk we have often walked past the Fox and admired the look of the place, (it also being part of the Old English Inn group). So, as we were going to Brighton for the weekend we thought we would try the White Horse expecting what appeared to be a good standard. Wrong - this place needs gutting and starting again. The location is excellent with a bus stop right out side for easy access into Brighton. However, the sea facing room was in an awful state. The electricity box was partly hanging off the wall. The curtains were dirty and shredded down the sides. Large damp patch on the bedroom ceiling. Rusty fixtures in the bathroom with part of the bath panel missing and filled in with sealant. Dear oh dear I could go on but for the price charged it was just very poor and not good enough. Paper hanging off the ceiling in the dining room and breakfast on the first morning was not what you call efficient. We asked for poached eggs and bacon with toast, simples? The eggs and bacon came out 50 mins later and then asked, "would you like some toast"! That eventually arrived way after we had finished. The staff try hard but you can tell they are fighting a losing battle.
On check-out I mentioned that it was not value for money but the wearily will tell you it will have a re-fit soon. Can't come soon enough. First and last time we frequent an Old English Inn establishment.

Room Tip: sea view good - just choose a different hotel

after almost 200 miles of driving our Check-in was rushed as we were late for an appointment in Brighton and all the roads around are 20 or 30 mph limit with plenty of speed cameras too.
Kevin was very helpful, printing full directions and a map to our destination and offering us a choice of rooms. A Double on the front corner overlooking the cross roads/traffic lights or a twin on the sea facing side overlooking the sea (and car Park which was quieter.) we chose the Twin - it was huge - with 2 double beds and a solid 2 door wardrobe with plenty of hangers and a mini-safe. The en suite with full bath/Power Shower/wc.+ Magnifying shaving mirror :) luxury toiletries included Tea making tray stocked for 2 days and a sensible length kettle cord/ Dressing table /telephone and Hair dryer. plenty of storage space quality window drapes that cut out the light. The beds proved v.comfortable and we enjoyed a solid un-interupted nights sleep. cant say it would be that quiet in High Season. Next morning , the (correct) newspaper was waiting at the door and we enjoyed a superb a la carte breakfast -dont think I've ever been given REAL sliced bread toasted before- in the Restaurant where we had enjoyed the daily 3 course special meal £7.50 pp the previous evening :) How we wish the other Hotels we choose to stay in could be this good. Our room / the public areas were spotless and EVERY member of Staff most helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Dbl 115 on the front or 111 is the Twin we chose. Other rooms on the 1st floor have a Balcony and fu...

My wife booked us in for two nights just to give us a break. Rottingdean is only 20 miles away from home but with a great transport system the hotel is well placed to Brighton, the Marina & is right on the beach. Forget the makeover the food the room and the service exceeded what we paid, Tom & the whole team did everything to make our stay.

Room Tip: Room 104 sea view, sofa, TV, en suite.

I think that the place is pretty good for what we paid which included breakfast and parking. As long as you ask staff about things then they are happy to help.

Staff are varied in approach which, thinking about it, is quite refreshing.

Points to improve: Being a bit more on the ball at serving breakfast (i.e. Not forgetting orders, people etc). I think that the hotel could actually help this by doing the whole "is everything ok" stuff every now and again. I know it's first thing in the morning though, and I kind of felt as if there weren't enough staff in the morning which meant that mistakes might happen? :)

Tips for other travellers: If you feel as if you are being missed out (like, missing part of your breakfast or whatever) ask sooner rather than later.

Wow! What a fantastic hotel, from the superb location to the warm and friendly staff. A few reviews I read refer to the fact that the hotel needs a bit of a makeover (this is planned for later this year btw) however I would rather have friendly staff, a clean room, a comfy bed and a lovely power shower to high priced decor. What stands out about this hotel is that the staff are genuinely interested in what you are up to and are more than happy to help and point you in the right direction. The atmosphere in the bar and hotel is really lovely and you feel a part of the furniture after a short while. The only very very slight critisim is that the food didn't quite live up to the excitement created by the varied menu. The food is above average but didn't have the wow factor. This said the prices were very reasonable. Kevan welcomed us to the hotel and he was up for a giggle which was nice. Tom Martin and the Wee man (Jack) kept us supplied with beer and smiles. Audrey was friendly and efficient in sorting out an issue with bill payment and did this without making us feel like we were trying to bunk off without paying! 10/10 guys, keep it up and can't wait to stay at The White Horse again.

The hotel is also a pub and when we arrived football was on and it seemed like it might be a slightly noisy place to stay. However, it was actually a very quiet and comfortable stay and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The bed was huge and very comfortable, and the room and bathroom were fairly big. The room wasn't very pretty, with some mould stains on the wall, but it was clean and the air seemed fresh enough. The shower was very high pressure and there was lots of hot water. Breakfast was great with one a la carte order ranging from full English, through Eggs Benedict to smoked salmon and more, served with freshly home baked toast. This was accompanied by a buffet of pain au chocolat, danish, bread, jams, honey, juices and more. The breakfast was served in a room with a view of the sea, and in the sun some guests were moving to the tables outside even though it was February. Location was great, right on the beach.
