“Clean,friendly but a bit tired!”
Reviewed July 6, 2013 via mobile

Friendly welcome, very clean room and bathroom with super large and comfortable bed. We ate in the restaurant for evening meal and breakfast both of which were very nice indeed.
Downsides, the room is in dire need of a makeover with peeling paint and shabby carpets and we had no net curtains which meant everyone in the car park and coming down the hill had a full view whether they or we liked it or not!!
The heating came on at full blast in the morning so we had to open the windows onto a very busy road.

We spent one night there for the move of our daughter back home from Brighton. We booked only a few days before but were lucky to find this little gem. It's probably a bit tired and in need of a general revision, but all worked fine. The Thomas Clare suite we stayed in has wonderful sea view and one can hear the sea all night. We also were lucky with nice sunshine and went for a run the next morning along the seaside promenade which incidentally goes all the way from Saltdean to Brighton (that would be a long run!). Welcome was very friendly, parking is free (very precious in this part of the world!), the room could have slept 4 people easily! Ok, the bathroom is not so splendid, cold tap did not work, decor quite tired and used, doorknob nearly falling off, but still charming. Breakfast was fresh and tasty, service quite rapid and very friendly. And we found it extremely good value for money. Friendliness of staff is also remarkable!

Room Tip: The seafront rooms have a wonderful view, the street side rooms probably have more noise! The Thomas...

Stayed here for a morning and an evening after completing the London2Brighton challenge. I could probably have slept on a park bench and thought nothing of it after walking 62 miles, but I will say that this hotel was very pleasant.

The room was spacious, had a modern TV, large bathroom with a proper bath, and had everything you needed for a decent night kip. It could be perceived by some to be slightly dated, but for me it was fine.

The hotel was right next to the beach, meaning a sea view from the room and also from the bar/restaurant. There was a regular bus service just across the road to Brighton, and there is also a Tesco opposite.

The food in the evening was excellent a d very reasonably priced, however the breakfast was the most commendable! There was a continental buffet, and then a choice of breakfast options from full English to Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon.

All the staff I came across were very pleasant and helpful. I just wish I had the energy to explore more of the area! I would definitely return to this hotel again.

Thank you for your good feed back, and congratulations on completing the London 2 Brighton Challenge, perhaps next time you stay it will be a less strenuous arrival and with time to explore the locality.

We stayed for the weekend of the 7th8th June 2013 in the Kipling suite. Room 110 .

We were attending a family function in ovingdean. So wanted somewhere very local and convienant . We had a fantastic stay . The hotel is a little tired around the edges. And 1970,s " swirly carpet ish "but it's very clean and the staff work very hard to make sure everything works well . The Kipling suite is in a fact a huge room with amazing sea views. It is however oak panelled with a 4 poster ..and heavy but tastful drapes ..think Agatha Christy ...far more suited to a country inn , than a beautiful bright costal pub . You expect the butler to loom out of the wood panels ... Or announce There has been a murder in the pantry and Sherlock Holmes is in the lobby madam...but hey that's just us( I am in fact an exiled Brightonian..living in Essex, so expect everything to be seagulls and deck chairs)
Back to the reality . John the manager is great does what it says on the tin. Beds are comfortable, clean crisp linen and full and replenished tea, coffee trays ( with enough milk and biccies for greedy guests ..)
Food - we had dinner on the Friday night 2 courses for £7.95 and a bottle if wine for around £10 . Fab fish and chips! Ok bog standard house white . Decadent cake:)

The breakfast , wow ! Good decent freshly cooked and great hours 8 to 12 ! Civilised for those of us who work crazy hours and want s lie in on holiday ! ( however the lady on the Saturday morning breakfast service did bark at us for daring be the last residents for breakfast at 10.20am on the Saturday...so yes she did take the shine off anotherwise nice stay)the buffet bit which we never saw as we were exhausted and were also on a party weekend is very good apparently , that gets cleared away at 10 ( as its cold , fruit , pastries etc that doesn't really make sense )
But a
La cart , full English etc is cooked to order until 12 noon.very civilised. the young lady on the Sunday morning service was far more forgiving for our tardiness at 11.30am and much more pleasant , and it's normal to lie in, than the shouty cross creature of the Saturday morning.
Dinner Saturday night good again.
Free wifi through the cloud , free parking ( weird shape car park, but who cares )!
The only thing lacking is a residents lounge to sit and chill out in , you only have the dining area and the pub bar. We had relatives also staying there in room115 which they said was "ok" but wished they could of had a Ses view ,( due to some booking sites it's not made clear) But on the whole we would certainly stay there again as is good value and a decent standard .

Tip take a shower cap , as for some reason they are not supplied despite the dustbin lid sized shower head .. I ended up tying a tesco carrier bag around my head ..

Really good value for money - the rooms require updating and modernising but they were really clean and well kept. Service on reception was excellent and the evening meal and breakfast were both good pub food quality. Would stay here again, it is a little further from Brighton that it says but apart from that it was a good place to stay.

We stayed for the weekend in, what is, essentially, the only hotel in the village. The location is superb, with a great seafront view. Had we booked earlier, we may have got a room overlooking this view. However, we didn't, so we had a view of the traffic junction and Tesco Express. The room was clean though, and had everything we needed. The bed was large and very comfortable. Thicker curtains would have blocked out the front floodlights, however. We weren't there to spend too much time in the room, so for the price paid, it was quite suitable. The staff were, with one exception, friendly, efficient and helpful. (Perhaps the gentleman in the reception area, who couldn't bring himself to make eye contact with his guests, or greet them with a 'Good Morning/Afternoon', needs to reconsider his vocation!) The Hotel is a great base for exploring the pretty village of Rottingdean. There is an excellent little cafe, 'The Sea Spray' run by Eric, where it is possible to experience the very best coffee! The restaurant ' Bistro Gourmand' offers the most exquisite French food, prepared and cooked by the French owner-chef, Frank. Forget anything else - this is the food of dreams!
I would return to The White Horse in order to explore further a beautiful part of the country. It does need a bit of TLC in certain areas - the paintwork for example and some of the furniture is somewhat tired, but it's a welcoming place and value for money. We only ate breakfast in the hotel, but it was freshly cooked to order and definitely worth waiting for. Much better than the usual buffet style found in most hotels these days.

Room Tip: Definitely book a sea view room. The road isn't a good alternative!

We arrived Saturday afternoon and after parking we walked into the clean and bright reception. We were met by a very polite receptionist and were given a key and directions to our room. I opened the door to the room and was extremely impressed by the size and the light emanating from the 9 windows facing the seafront was sublime. We decided to have a drink in the main bar and allthough they were short staffed and working at capacity did not have to wait very long. The food looked inviting and the whole experience was great. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in the area then look no further than the White Horse. Well done to the staff...except maybe the manager who seemed uninterested in the patrons.
