We used the public bar for our post-funeral party and the staff, particularly John, could not have been more helpful. They helped make what could have been a sad and awkward occasion, a very pleasant one. There were no hitches in the arrangements and the buffet food was perfect. The staff dealt effortlessly with the vagaries of our drinks order and respected our need to be left alone.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 njghts, after reading the previous reviews we thought it couldn't possibly be that bad,how wrong were we!!!!When we tried to check in no one on the reception desk but a message to ring 203 on the phone which was on the desk! I rang 203 then 20mins later I presume it was John who arrived with an apology,no welcome gestures.
Did all the necessary paperwork then gave us the key for room 116.& I agree with the previous review that this room which we paid £168 for B&B was not worth that amount.Bed was clean & comfortable as was the toilet & basin in the bathroom.Couldn't possibly envisage having a bath or shower as the mould was inches thick on the taps.Had meal there on the 2nd night, ordered food @ 7.05pm starter came @ 7.35pm even Toby the very helpful waiter said it was not acceptable. When the food came it was good.We ordered a bottle of wine which came very soon before we had our starters.Main meal arrived eventually with no knives & forks & my meal was wrong.I did complain so ended up having a free bottle of wine. When we checked ou John was in reception,no mention of did you enjoy your stay!!! but smiled when I payed him!!!!! Won't be staying there again.

I took my mother to White Horse Hotel for her Birthday meal on Sunday 26th August '12, what a disappointment! We should have known as we had received a call to say that the carvery wasn't on. Then when we got there a lot of the menu wasn't on either. There were four of us, 3 meals were just about acceptable, albeit a bit dry and no taste, but mine was disgusting. It was bland, it was overcooked and looked as though it had been put in the oven to keep warm for at least 20 mins as the 'new' potatoes had begun to develop a 'skin'. I hardly ate anything and when they collected our plates at the end (as they hadn't checked with us during the meal), I conveyed my disappointment. The waiter said he would tell the chef, well no appology at all! Not even an offer of another choice or for the meal to be taken off the bill. POOR MANAGEMENT!!!!!!!!!!!! I wasn't looking for a freebe, just a nice meal with my family...........THANK YOU FOR SPOILING THE OCCASION!!

We've stayed at many Old English Inns for short breaks over the years but although the White Horse staff were friendly and efficient and the food ok, we were put into Room 116 on the first evening and how were they can offer this room out as acceptable accommodation to guests is unbelievable. Although small and the en-suite and bedding were not problem, the rooms decor which resembled a student let, large damp patch in one corner of the ceiling, paint work awful and whoever painted the room must of run out paint when it came to doing the walls by the free standing beside cabinet it had just been roughly painted around. This we possible could turn a blind eye to, but the room was above the kitchen and an extractor fan was on all through the night and the mattress on one side had indentation in it the size of a dinner plate and the indent was a good 5 inches deep which you couldn't sleep on at all. We did not notice this knackered mattress, and it obviously had been like it for some time, until we returned from an evening out as felt it was too late to ask for a change of room. After no sleep on the first night, we contacted reception and as soon as we said which room we were in, they straight away said we'll change you room for you. We were told something would be sorted out with regard to payment for this room when we checked out but this never happened. The room we were moved to was clearly one of their best and we were extremely happy with this but how the first room can be deemed as an acceptable room for letting with a busted mattress and awful decor really does need attention as this was clearly the worse room we have ever stayed in through Old English Inns. I can only hope our next stay (which was booked prior to this stay) at Roebuck next month is up to their usual standard. We would stay at this hotel again but definitely not in Room 116. First room rate 0. Rest of hotel 3,

The food at the White Horse Hotel was great and it was so close to the beach, we had a lovely long walk by the sea before dinner. The room was spacious and had tea making facilities. The bedding was clean. Unfortunately, the decor is tatty and the room and bathroom could have been much improved. The room overlooked the main road and a flat roof. The window that overlooked the main road did not have a net curtain which meant that the upper level of the double decker buses that passed could look into the room. The bathroom, although the toilet and bath were clean, there was an inch of dirt and dust on the pipes, paint splots and parts of the wood chipped off on the door which would not close and no blind over one of the windows, which although was frosted, we were conscious of the fact that when the light was on even a frosted window gives quite a good idea of the undressed state of the person behind it.

Stayed here overnight for anniversary. Hotel, staff and breakfast all lovely and perfect location. Just outside brighton but no12 bus goes from right outside the hotel to the pier and station for only 4.40 for a day pass. As train didn't leave till late staff were more than happy for us to leave our bags with them past check in and come back later to get them. Perfect getaway thank you!

We only stayed here because my wife had forgotten the name of the hotel where she had previously stayed in the area! Our intention was to use it as a base for some walking and it is well located both for the South Downs (via a virtually off-road route) and for Brighton via The Undercliff. It struck us as more of a pub with rooms than a traditional hotel. We did not eat there in the evenings but certainly enjoyed our breakfasts. There is a range of choice and the hot selection is cooked to order. Despite this, the service was quite speedy and the attitude of the staff was very pleasant.

Our room (on the side of the hotel) was very roomy and the bed extremely comfortable. Best of all, the bathroom has both a bath and a shower.

On our last morning we chose to go for a final walk and the hotel was very happy to look after our bags until well into the afternoon and well past check-out time.
