“Do not use for Functions!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 6, 2012

Were invited to a mason ladies night, the hotel seem incapable of providing any form service when it comes functions. I was not surprised to learn this was not an isolated incident after reading other reviews. Firstly the bar that was serving pre-dinner drinks only had one staff member, there was 75+ people wanting drinks, I stood at the bar for over 10 mins to make my order. Additional staff did eventually come and help. The food was awful, meat was overcooked and the vegetables undercooked, there was no organisation when it came to bringing people their food which meant some people were finishing their food whilst others on the same table hadn't even got theirs. Honestly the food was terrible. The manager of the hotel had to apologise for the poor service to everyone in the room.
Our room was clean and bed comfy. The shower head was cracked which meant water was squirting out the side of it. Decor is very dated.

Thank you for your review. I am fully aware of the issues and I can assure you that we are working hard to rectify things. I have had a meeting with the Ladies Festival commitee members and we have closure on the event and we are . We organise and operate 100+ events yearly amongst other things and normally get it right. On this occasion we did not. We have reviewed our operations and invested since this occurance in equipment and staff training.

The organistion and planning of the evening by the event organisors was unquestionable and there was a strong relationship between the 2 parties that we will continue to build up. We have organised events in the past for this lodge and they have always been happy with the service.

I am personally ensuring that every single booking will now be managed and attention to detail is in place to make events run smoothly.

Checked in on Sunday night and thought it was quiet. I stayed in room 146 a nice new twin room. I enjoyed a beer in the bar...the bar does look very tired/ Did not eat here as I was meeting a friend but the bar menu looked good. When I got back the bar was a lot more lively. Had a great sleep and finished with a great breakfast. Would definately stay again.

Room Tip: 146 a tidy room with 2 kingsize single beds.

We have booked the hotel venue for our wedding , and also booked a few rooms for weeding guests that wanted to stay overnight.
Initial meetings with the hotel staff were good, and we received assurances that everything we have asked ( which was just normal , common sense stuff) will be in place for the wedding day .
What a bitter disappointment it turned out to be!!!
On the wedding day, the bridal suite was COLD, and NOTHING was in the room to make it a bridal suite : no glasses, no champagne bottle, no flowers , and not even a card ! To to that, the air conditioning was no working, so we could not heat the room using it either .
Only when we call reception to complain that nothing was ready in place, they did send a bottle of champagne , and apologise , but the damage was already done.
It is true that later we found in the room a teddy bear and a letter of apology , accompanied by a chocolate box.
But things did not end that way unfortunately.
The shower was leaking so badly that we were in danger of flooding the room itself if we would have a shower longer that 2 minutes, and even that was possiblem by only laying down a large towel to slow the water going into the room.
Few other wedding guests had a similar experience: shower mixer in the bath not working at all, rooms freezing cold, windows with the locks broken and gaps of an inch letting cold air in throughout the night ...
To top it all, although we have paid for all our guest rooms in advance, one family could not find their reservation room at all, and they had to rent separately a room and pay for it.
At least 2 other pairs of guests have insisted to pay for their rooms, and despite our repeated enquiries to the hotel regarding the final account, we never get a refund or a clear account situation, although we have been promised one.
The wedding room itself was not decorated according with the instructions given , the garden outside was pitch black despite assurances given that there would be flood lights on the day to allow us to use the garden for photos , and the fountain was not working either, again despite assurances that it would be operational.
Also, despite our instructions and assurances that it would be done accordingly, the restaurant personnel did not replenish the guests tables with drinks when the initial ones were consumed, nobody did that, so we had to go over to them and organise this during the wedding.
Our advice ? Stay there or book your wedding day ONLY if you have exhausted ALL other options.
Otherwise, STAY AWAY!!!

I booked a 1 night business stay for myself and a colleague as we were working in Grays. I was a little worried as some of the reviews are not the best, but overall it was OK and pretty good in fact.

We found the hotel easily due to the good directions on the website. The first impressions of the lobby were very good. Check in was easy and efficient.

As you ventured further into the hotel you good see that the hotel is a little tired and some areas need decorating and the carpets replacing.

My room was huge, flat screen TV, tea and coffee facilities. it was clean and tidy, the carpet looked relatively stain free (see previous reviews) and the bed was very comfortable. Although the room needed a spruce up it was very clean and also nice and warm - being as it was freezing outside this was a nice feature!

We went out for dinner to nearby Lakeside which was only a few minutes away from an array of eating choices.

Breakfast in the morning was not great, but it was OK and filled us up nicely for the day ahead.

I would not go out of my way to stay here, but if I am working in Grays again I would stay here.

Stayed here because we were having a work do here. Altogether I think 10 of us had booked a room although about 60 of us attended the evening do.
When we arrived to book in we all headed for the bar but we had to keep asking at reception to get served because there didn't seem to be enough staff although that did improve later in the afternoon. Some of my work mates had already checked in when we arrived and said the rooms were like sauna's and they had to open the windows to cool it down. Great I thought because the temperature outside was dropping.
After a couple of drinks we went up to the room which we found was a lovely size but oh my goodness it was freezing. On investigation we found the thermostat on radiator was on low so we turned it up and returned to bar while it warmed up a bit. We went back to room about 5:30 to find it just as cold, checked radiator to find that it was luke warm at bottom and cold at top. OH went to reception and was told they would send someone up. We went to diiner at about 7:00 and no one had been so stopped at reception and complained again and was once again told someone would attend to rectify it.
After spending the night eating drinking and dancing we went up about 1:30am to find the room even colder now that the temperature had dropped below freezing outside. We by now were so tired and a little drunk so we layered up and went to bed because we didn't want to wait up now for someone to attend.
The corridors were also very cold but the public areas were quite warm.
The staff in the evening were very good and worked really hard making sure we all got our dinners ok.

Room Tip: Don't get room 223

The location of the hotel is fantastic for the lakeside shopping area. The hotel lobby and food were ok, it's the rooms that let them down. Wallpaper coming off the walls, strong smell of BO, no heating on, bathrooms with mould on the tiles, really really creaky floorboards and paper thin walls (I heard way more then I needed to) its a shame but to compete with the premier inn that's over the road they really need to invest in updating that place.
