“Afternoon tea for two”
Reviewed July 13, 2013

Excellent cream teas with generous portions! Good value. Staff very friendly and welcoming (thanks to Jennifer especially) and found us a cool spot on a very hot day. Two weddings were in progress but we were aware of this before the visit and staff were able to accommodate us. Will try the Spa day asap!

Our formal gardens are an ideal setting to enjoy a cream tea or just relax and enjoy the sunshine. Thank you very much for this review and we would hope that you will return and make full use of all our leisure facilities including the spa.

I stayed with a friend as part of a small group (20) for 3 days. We had been given menus beforehand from which to choose for all the dinners which described the food in glowing terms. However, Pigeon breast with melon and cucumber salad - couldn't find the salad, crab with rocket salad - no rocket only lettuce, chocolate mousse with salted praline icecream - turned out to be ginger ice cream, red pesto linguine metamorphosed into plain spaghetti - and so on and so on. Plus we found a fly in the bacon at breakfast and the staff were quite unconcerned. The standard was bad, and the staff either churlish or willing but seemed out of their depth. The spectacular building and pleasant room do not make up for this kind of experience in the restaurant

It is always a great disappointment to read a review where a guest feels we have failed to fully meet their expectations and to deliver the usually high standards of service on which we pride ourselves. We would like to apologise to this reviewer if they felt that our attitude to a guest’s complaint is treated as churlish as we will always try to rectify any problem that may arise during a guest stay at Tortworth Court. We have many compliments for the quality of food on our Moretons restaurant menu and apologise if these did not meets this reviewers tastes. We would like to thank you for this review.

Having rootled around the search engines we decided to book a spur of the moment birthday spa and overnight stay at Tortworth Court. We're so pleased we did. What an absolutely wonderful place. The grounds and building are spectacular (the wonderful weather helped of course). I cannot praise this place highly enough given the price paid. The room (No 34) was high ceilinged, oaked beamed splendour overlooking the beautiful terrace. It was also huge. Try and up grade to a superior room in the main building it's well worth it. Everywhere was as clean as a whistle. We both really enjoyed the food too. We also took advantage of the 'twilight' spa package (£49 after 4pm for a 25 min treatment plus a 2 course meal with a glass of wine - a no brainer really!) which was absolutely great. However, it matters not a jot how wonderful the place is without decent staff. This place has more than decent staff. Everyone, and I mean everyone, we came into contact with was friendly, polite, knowledgeable and couldn't do enough for you. It really made the stay no question. A very well done to Four Pillars Group and Tortworth Court management for the obvious time and effort which has gone into staff training. As we do not live that far away, this will be the first of many trips to Tortworth Court that's for sure.

Room Tip: Upgade to a superior room in the main building - it's well worth it.

Thank you for unearthing the ‘hidden gem’ that is Tortworth Court and are pleased that you enjoyed your spa twilight package and made full use of all our leisure facilities. Our grounds and building are spectacular, a Victorian Manor house set within 30 acres of woodland. Thank you for your comments on our friendly, polite and knowledgeable staff and we look forward to welcoming you back to Tortworth Court.

To say that we had a bargain from Travelzoo for two nights DBB is a gross understatement! we had a fantastic bargain!
The hotel was an absolute pleasure and delight to visit. The hotel building was a fantastic place, set in beautiful grounds. The staff were all excellent in the way they approached their duties, nothing was to much trouble for them they went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one.
I had read previous reports about rooms being in an annex far away from the main hotel building? whilst it seemed that most of the rooms other than the suites were away from the main building, none of the rooms needed to be accessed by going outside. Our room was a twin double and the standard of everything to do with the room was excellent.
Our evening meal was taken a 8pm and both the food and the service was again excellent! at no time did we feel that because of our Travelzoo bargain break we were other than much welcomed hotel quests.

I do have one criticism! and that concerns the breakfast on both days!
diabolical!, a disaster!, mass catering on a very poor scale!, (sorry tortworth court) it is not just your hotel! but all hotels that run a buffet breakfast suffer from the very same failing in food standard!

Would I stay there again? YES PLEASE!

only next time I would stick to the continental breakfast that was on offer.

We are extremely pleased that you had a fantastic bargain stay at Tortworth Court and found the Victorian Manor house set within 30 acres of woodland and formal garden to be an absolute pleasure and delight to visit. With 190 bedrooms the hotel does cover a large area of ground, all the bedrooms can be accessed without going outside and we can allocate leisure guests rooms away from any noisy function that may be taking place within the hotel. Thank you for this review and your kind comments for all our staff that helped make your stay so enjoyable.

This was our third short break in this particular hotel in the past few years and we took advantage of a offer which included the evening meal. Originally built be the Earl of Ducie in the 19th century. The main body of the hotel has many original features which adds character to the experience of the stay. The staff were friendly and efficient and there were modern facilities such as spa, gym and swimming pool. The terrace at the back of the hotel is ideal for nice sunny days which overlooks the well kept formal garden. There is an arboretum as well with a wide variety of trees which are labelled for those who wish to enjoy them. Although reception did not have a map of the trees when I asked for one.

Breakfast was buffet style with cereal, continental and full English and of a good standard. Dinner was good with a good selection on the menu which was changed on the second evening we were there. We had no complaints on service or the standard of the food and could have opted for room service if so inclined.

My one criticism is I did not get a good nights sleep due to the firmness of the matress. I don't know what it is with some hotels who seem to think everyone likes sleeping on very hard matresses. Whether they believe all people prefer these or whether they think they will last longer, I do not know. When checking out I did mention this to the receptionist in response to her enquiry if I had an enjoyable stay. She did say had I mentioned it earlier then they would have placed a duvet on top in an attempt to make it more confortable. Also that there was a programme to renovate the rooms which included replacement matresses.

I would have rated the hotel higher if not for the fact that the matress gave me a bit of a back ache in the mornings. Nevertheless, if you like 'hard' beds and hotels with character, this place is for you.

Room Tip: We went for the room upgrade which gave us a spacious period room on the second floor in the main ho...

Over the past 18 months we have refurbished many of the public area at Tortworth Court including the reception area, Moretons restaurant and both the Atrium and Brunel’s bar. We are currently refurbishing most of our 190 bedrooms, which includes the fixtures and fittings and feel sure that on a return visit this reviewer will notice a vast difference. Our head housekeeper would have gladly replaced the mattress, or offered a mattress topper for this reviewer and we apologise for not giving them this information during their stay. We are pleased that this reviewer enjoy their third visit to Tortworth Court and we would like to thank them for this review and look forward to welcoming them back soon.

Arrived Friday 3.30 ish. Knew we would not be able to get in to the room before 4pm. But we were told room was ready so off we trotted. We only wanted a basic room as we did not plan to be in very much. But it had all we needed, hair dryer, iron (just in case) tea/coffee/biscuits and some toiletries in the bathroom. Very comfy bed and lovely pillows.
Food excellent, we are veggies, there were a good couple of options for us at dinner in Mortons restaurant. Some places we have been to offer 1 option, not the case here. I heard somebody ask for something different that was not on the menu, it was no trouble at all. We had a 3 course meal each and the food was just so so good. Not mean on portions either.
The wine list was brilliant, they keep a good cellar.
Breakfast was so good, the choice was endless, I felt a bit guilty just having cereal and a croissant. You help yourself to the buffet breakfast, they cook the veggie sausages, poached/boiled eggs to order. I recall seeing kippers on the breakfast menu too.
Lunch was in the lounge bar, I has the nacho's with all the works and was so full, excellent value for money. We had a morning coffee in the Atrium and the lovely lady behind the counter in there was so helpful and friendly. The staff wherever you go are friendly and helpful.
The grounds are just beautiful, we picked a very hot weekend to go, so were grateful of the cool shade of the most magnificent trees. There is tree trail to follow.
There is a pool and Spa treatment centre which we have used in the past, didn't this time sadly, but I overheard people saying what a fabulous Spa centre.
We have stayed many times before, the last time we stayed, 2 years ago we were disappointed by the quality of the food and the run down appearance of parts of the hotel. Well they have done a very good job of turning it around.
Can't wait to go again.

Room Tip: Staff will advise on the best room for your needs.

My daughter's wedding was held here on 30th June 2013 and it was perfect. We had several meetings with the wedding co-ordinator prior to the big day, and all our requirements were met and carried out in a professional manner. I had complete confidence in the staff. The hotel and grounds made a beautiful backdrop for wedding photos. The wedding breakfast was delicious and the staff were very attentive. Our Toast Master, Barbara, was superb. She made the day run smoothly by making sure that everyone was in the right place at the right time. And the men fell in love with her. Well done 'Babs'. Well done Tortworth for making our day so special.
