“Good location and comfortable but let down by average food and indifferent wine”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

We stayed here for 2 nights on a package which does represent fair value for money. We had a good sized room with a clean and well appointed bathroom. However the bed is rather firm and the pillows are in definite need of replacement. On both nights there was quite a lot of noise coming from parties in the Orangery - which has a glass roof and is therefore not a good insulator for sound from a dance floor. However, this was a minor issue for us. The public rooms are well appointed and comfortable. The service is very good and friendly. The hotel rather lets itself down with its food which tends to be big on portion size when perhaps more emphasis could be made on the quality. A dish of the day would be a useful addition to the menu. The wine list is disappointing. The wines are not cheap and are not in my view of good quality. They could easily get much more interesting wines and still sell them at a good profit.
The hotel is well located with good access to lots of good places to visit.

Room Tip: recommendations seem to be to stay in the main house - which we did.

Thank you for this review and your comments that you found Tortworth Court to be fair value for money with a good sized bedrooms and well-appointed bathrooms. Our housekeeping department do have mattress toppers available, which can make beds slightly softer if any guest finds their bed harder than their bed at home. Tortworth Court has 190 bedrooms and we will always try, if possible, to allocate guests bedrooms away from any functions that are taking place that may involve a disco or live band. We do have a full and extensive wine list and are sorry that this did not suit your personal taste. We are very pleased that you found the food and service to be both good, even if the portions of food you found to be larger than most restaurants. Tortworth Court is ideally located, just off junction 14 of the M5, for exploring not only Bristol, Cardiff but also the Cotswolds.

Stayed at this hotel to attend a wedding in the area so only ate breakfast. Both days breakfast wasn't great. The building is beautiful and comfortably furnished in the hotel and general areas of hotel. Hotel was full as there were 2 weddings there. It is a good venue for a wedding. My husband used gym and pool and had a great workout.

Room Tip: We were in 214 which was fairly quiet

Thank you for this review and we hope you enjoyed the wedding celebrations at Tortworth Court. We are disappointed that this reviewer did not enjoy our buffet breakfast as we do offer a choice of full continental or cooked breakfast and there is always a variety to choose from. We are very pleased that this guest’s husband found time to make use of our leisure facilities and overall they felt that Tortworth Court is a beautiful building and a good venue for weddings.

We stayed at Tortworth for a business event. I was impressed how easy it was to find from the M5 and felt like royalty driving up the drive.

The old part of the building is just stunning, and the grounds are just as lovely.

I found the phone signal in the bedrooms to be a bit hit and miss also. Talking of the bedrooms, I was allocated room 124 in the modern square of the property. Nice room but did hear noise from other guests walking pasts and the person in the room next to me seemed to spend a lot of time slamming the wardrobe!

I ate in the bar for a casual lunch, which was fine. When we had our business event, we had lunch in the Orangery, but a few delegates made comments that they didn't think the lunch wasn't up to the grade.

The drive up to the hotel is very impressive and we thank you for your comments that the building is stunning and our grounds are lovely and for this review, we hope you enjoyed the business meeting at Tortworth Court. The Orangery is a magnificent glass building mainly used for weddings, conference and private parties and I am sorry that the lunch severed was not to your personal tastes. The telephone signal is one of the major projects that we have undertaken to improve over the last two years, along with the Wi-Fi signal but because of our location and being a listed building it is not an easy problem to rectify. We have now succeeded in full hotel coverage for the Wi-Fi and although we have made improvements to the telephone signal strength it is still something we are working on to improve for all our guests.

My friend and i booked for a girly weekend away and spa trip. This was one of the most relaxing weekend away that we have ever had and one of the most easily accessible. We booked with a special offer on spabreaks for a nights B and B and spa treatment. The room was lovely, spacious and quiet. Breakfast was excellent, and staff attentive in a very busy room. The spa was great and I have nothing but compliments for the hotel and staff.

this is a very nice hotel, I stayed there last week with colleagues and we all enjoyed it, the general consensus was mobile phone networks didnt work well in the hotel apart from small pockets and it didnt seem to be limited to any given service provider.
Also some of the rooms took some finding and the directions to rooms internally could be improved.
the staff were fine and the breakfast was good,
the bar meals were at best ok with a mixed quality evident over our meals,
Never the less the setting was excellent and the hotel building was very impressive.

Room Tip: try and ask for a room with decent phone signal

Thank you for this review. Over the last two years we have considerable increased the Wi-Fi signal strength within the hotel and we have also been trying to increase the signal strength for mobile phone. Due to its location and that Tortworth Court is a listed building it is not an easy problem to solve but we are determined to find a solution which will allow all our guests to be able to make full use of all their electronic devises while staying in the hotel. Tortworth Court has 190 bedrooms and does cover a large area of ground, our reception team do hand out maps to all guests and this indicates where their room is located and the nearest car park. We are in the process of refurbishing the corridors and the bedroom signage and feel sure this reviewer will notice the difference on a return visit. Thank you for your observations regarding the food in the bar, our breakfast and our staff. We are very pleased that you found the setting for Tortworth Court to be excellent and the main building to be impressive.

This is a great hotel everything is good - it is a beautiful building in a lovely setting, the staff are very nice and is is a nice experience staying there

The room I stayed in - No. 9 was presented very well and spacious - But - it was noisy you could hear everything from the room above including the squeaky floor boards, TV etc and someone had apparently consistantly failed to clean the loo seat around the hinges and they were Ugh!

The breakfast was - rubber eggs, leather bacon and well just rubbish

Would I go back again - Yes - but I would hope that the management had read my satisfaction survey and picked up the above negative points

Room Tip: ask for a quiet one and check it out fully on arrival

The management at Tortworth Court do read our guests satisfaction surveys, which are the comment card we place in all our bedrooms and we have replied to the guest with a personal email. Our guest relations department reply to comment cards, letters or emails sent to Tortworth Court, with either negative or positive comments as quickly as possible. We are sorry that this guest found their room to be noisy; due to the nature of the old building their room is located in and that there was an issue with the cleanliness, which has now been rectified. We are very pleased that this guest will return to Tortworth Court and we look forward to welcoming them back. Thank you for this review.

We stayed at the Tortworth Court last weekend, in fact over the same period as the last oh-so-experienced-in-leisure-industry reviewer. Well, it looks to me like they must have been at a different place!

We arrived on Friday and got a very nice room on the second floor. Huge room, views over the back lawn and the lake. Dinner was prebooked as a package for both nights of our stay and we found the service very efficient, always saw several members of staff around the restaurant and available for questions. They also asked after every course whether the meal had been alright. It definitely was more than just alright, very tasty indeed. Salmon starter on Friday and Chocolate desert on Saturday are particularly worth mentioning.

The hotel was very quiet at night, also no early morning disturbances by other guests (there are plenty of doors dividing the corridors into segments). Pool clean, nice temperature, large towels provided. We tried it twice late afternoon and never saw more than 8-10 people in there. There was a large event in the orangerie on Saturday, but even that did not cause any problems with service in the main restaurant for dinner or breakfast the next morning. OK, you may have to queue for 5 minutes for hot breakfast, but that's down to other guests having leisurely conversations in front of the buffet instead of putting food on their plates. I was concerned how the free WiFi would work on the second floor of an old building with potentially thick walls - no problems, got a stable signal straightaway!

Now...you really have to dig hard to find anything negative to mention at all, but these are really the only things where the hotel could improve in our opinion: (1) quite a few menu items in the restaurant had surcharges - I can understand this for steak, but why for fish, but is it really necessary for seabass, chocolate desert, cheese & biscuits? Come on, build it into the package price! (2) the front panel of the bath tub was a relatively cheap painted board which although well-painted showed some wear around the edges - management, please spend a few pounds on a proper panel that doesn't let the overall impression down (3) no hand towel rail next to sink in bathroom - awkward if you have to hang it over the bathtub or on the back of the door (4) in-room instructions are could do with review: (a) booklet indicates that additional towels and shoe sponge would be in drawer - not provided, (b) shower instructions say to pull handle towards you - no, you need to turn it to the left, else you'll damage the shower!, (c) can some correct the spelling mistake in the "toiletries" section of the booklet - sloppy editing!, (5) we found several small glitter hearts on the carpet, not properly vaccuumed after previous guests, (6) spacious wardrobe, but only 9 hangers - some more would have been nice.

The funniest thing was the room plan indicating a 'breakout area' on the first floor near the meeting rooms. Leyhill prison is just next door, so we were wondering whether this area had been designed with the neighbours in mind? ;-)

We felt we got excellent value for money and will certainly come back. Wonderful place!

Room Tip: It's worth spending a few extra pounds for the more expensive rooms in the main building. Ask fo...

Thank you very much for this well balanced view of Tortworth Court and your headline says it all. We appreciate your ‘negative’ comments, regarding the spelling mistakes, bath panel and supplements for dinner and these will be looked at on an individual basis by the departments concerned. Tortworth Court has 190 bedrooms and we are pleased that your room overlooked the formal gardens and Tortworth Lake, the lake belongs to the Tortworth farm estate and is not part of Tortworth Court Hotel, enjoyed your dinner in our Moretons restaurant, especially the salmon starter and chocolate dessert, and made full use of our leisure faculties. Built as a private house in 1853 the walls of the main house are extremely thick and the Wi-Fi signal has been an issue in the past but this has now been completely updated and is fully available within the hotel. The break out area is for our conference guests to relax and enjoy their coffee/tea and we are pleased that you found the funny side to this; as we are next to Leyhill open prison.
Thank you again for this review and that you found Tortworth Court to be excellent value for money, a wonderful place and will certainly return.
