“Hogwarts in Gloucestershire!”
Reviewed February 4, 2013

Bought a Sunday night £99 stay for my girlfriend's birthday on a recommendation of a friend. Didn't really know what to expect after reading mixed reviews on here. I cannot fault any part of our stay. The reception staff were excellent, giving us a room in the main building (no.4) after I asked for an upgrade. The room was clean and everything you would require for a stay was provided. The bathroom was large and whilst some of the fittings were a bit tired it was spotlessly clean and the water was piping hot and high pressure.

After bringing our bags in, we walked back down the main staircase and marvelled at the wonderful architecture of this magnificent building. We took our seats in the atrium where after a long wait were eventually served 2delicious cream teas, the scones were warm! There were complimentary newspapers and magazines and the ambience in the atrium as dusk fell was wonderful. Next up was the pool and steam room/sauna. By 6.30pm the pool had only a few guests using it. The water was warm and we spent an hour or so swimming and sweating! We booked our 3 course evening meal for 9pm and were shown to our table in the magnificent dining room. I was half expecting Dumbledore to take our order. The fittings and fixtures in what I presume was once a library were a joy to behold. Intricate stonework and ornate wood carving was everywhere. The food was amazing, 3 courses and all perfectly cooked, we couldn't fault it at all and all included in the £99!! There was plenty of choice on the menu, something for everyone.

My girlfriend and I couldn't fault the hotel at all apart from it being very warm in every area which was a pleasant surprise when we first arrived, but we did find it rather hot to sleep in and had the window wide open all through the night...but it could have been worse it could have been cold!!

I would thoroughly recommend this hotel and my girlfriend is already trying to book us in for a few months time.

Room Tip: Would definitely say ask for an upgrade on arrival and try and get a room in the main house.

We are pleased that this reviewer and his girlfriend had an enjoyable birthday stay at Tortworth Court and are already planning their next trip in a few months’ time. Thank you for your kind comments for our excellent reception staff and the cleanliness of your bedroom. The architecture of our main staircase is wonderful and can remind our guests of Hogwarts but our stairs do not move around and our recently refurbished Atrium bar with its high walls and glass ceiling is also a fantastic place just to sit and relax with a drink. Our Moretons restaurant, where we served this reviewer their amazing and perfectly cooked food, was indeed a library, when the house was first built and still retains its intricate stonework and woodcarving ,is a magnificent setting for our guests to dine in. We would like to thank this reviewer for their comments and are pleased they will be recommending Tortworth Court Hotel.

A real castle with corridors to get lost for hours, and a height under roof over 12 meters. All this inside a beautiful parc and jardins à la frannçaise.
It is so great that we never found the way to the gym and swimmingpool.
Food in the restaurant was good but to survive you must speak one of eastern Europe language as there are hardly any Briton on board.
Big rooms and real break to business life.

Room Tip: ask to be on the floor to have a view and avoid car lights parking below your window!

Tortworth Court was used by the American services during World War 2 and they did call it Tortworth Castle and it is easy to see why when driving through our splendid arboretum and grounds. (Or park and gardens as the French would say). We are sorry that this guest did not find or make use of our leisure facilities, including pool, gym and steam room and very much hope they find them on a return visit. Thank you very much for this review and are pleased that this reviewer enjoyed the food and hospitality at Tortworth Court.

Very pretty setting, friendly staff and good food, but try and get rooms in main house rather than extension as the cleanliness was not at a good standard. Bathroom smelt of urine and cobwebs were in bedroom area. Was in need of a deep clean ! overall a pleasant stay and would stay again although would insist on staying in main building.

We are disappointed that this guest’s room was not to our usual high standard when checking into the hotel. We did rectify this very quickly and are glad this did not stop them from having a pleasant stay. We are currently refurbishing most of our bedrooms and corridors throughout the hotel and feel sure this guest will see a vast improvement on their next visit to Tortworth Court. We are very pleased that this reviewer found our restaurant food to be good and our staff to be friendly and we would like to thank them very much for this review.

Tortworth Court does as it says in its advert. In a superb location, this former Prison Officers Training School has been tastefully refurbished following a fire in 1991. Rooms are large & clean with complimentary soap, shampoo, etc, room has flat screen tv, along with tea, coffee, biscuits etc. Trying to get to the rooms, through a warren of small corridors is a work of art, & you will need the guide given to you by the friendly & cheerful reception staff.
The main bone of contention however was the evening meal, we choose the roast of the day which was advertised as Roast Turkey with all the trimmings, what arrived was in fact looked like rolled turkey not fresh, with no trimmings and a few veg & roast potatoes, very very hot but veg was cold after a few mins, & appears pre cooked and put in a microwave. We had lunch in the Atrium bar, hot soup, fresh crusty bread, coffee & cake which was delicious.
Buffet breakfast was very good, with a good choice of full english or continental, with fresh coffee tea etc, plus porridge, & fresh fruit.
What is very good about this hotel was the lack of the laptop, tablet, & kindle nurds, tapping away all day, we understand this was due to the lack of wifi signal, wish all were all like this. It was like a wake with group stood in the entrance be moaning the fact they had no signal & could not be away from there beloved toys for five mins.
As commented by a previous re-viewer the swimming pool is not large enough for the number of guests, which at one point resembled a school playground, with the pool & hottub taken over by a large wedding party leaving other hotel guests like ourselfs to wait until 6pm on sunday to get a decent swim, as we tried in vain on saturday to find a quite time for a swim.
In conclusion this is a good hotel, well run, very clean & warm, and as previously stated a superb location 20 mins from the centre of Bristol, and has the potential to be very good indeed if the food & leisure problems were looked into.
Would we go again? probably yes, would we recommend this hotel yes.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the main building, you wont have as far to walk.

Over many years since Tortworth Court was built as a private house it has seen many changes, as this reviewer has mentioned and it has also been used by the English and American armed services and now as a four star hotel situated just off junction 14 of the M5. We are very pleased that this guest found their room large, clean and comfortable with all the facilities for making their stay enjoyable. All our meat and poultry is cooked fresh in our kitchens and we do not use turkey roll or microwaves and are disappointed to read that this guest did not enjoy their dining experience but we are pleased they fully enjoyed our buffet breakfast. We are currently refurbishing most of our 190 bedrooms and corridors and have plans to improve the facilities in our pool and leisure area. We feel sure this guest will see a vast improvement on their next visit. Thank you very much for this review and that you found Tortworth Court to be a good, well run ,very clean and warm hotel and will be recommending Tortworth Court to other potential guest and trip advisor readers.

The internet service is painfully slow and the mobile phone signal is almost non existent. A contact tried to call the hotel landline four times to be put through to my room and there was no reply (19:00hrs busy period). As a hotel for the business community this lets is a big let down.
Breakfast is also a bit run of the mill with very little choice regarding fresh fruit (fruit salad only and a bowl of tired apples), no bread other than sliced brown or white. Could be so much better, I remember they used to serve bowls of raspberries and strawberries and different types of bread, it's all a bit austere credit crunch these days.
The spa change areas and sauna and stairwell leading to them require a good refurb.
This hotel has bags of potential, the arboretum and the architecture are fantastic (some of the redecoration of the front of house areas have detracted some of the character of the building).
Come on Four Pillars, raise the game!

Tortworth Court is a Victorian mansion built as a private house in 1853 and because of its location and the thickness of the walls it has been difficult in the past to obtain an internet signal. Our internet provider have over the last year update and upgraded all its equipment and we now have a strong internet signal in most parts of Tortworth Court. Our telephone signal varies in many parts of the hotel but this is constantly monitored. We do apologise if this review had a slight issue with either the internet or phone signal. Our buffet style breakfast always has a large selection of fresh fruit, Danish pastries, yoghurts and cereals. In the past year at Tortworth Court we have refurbished our Atrium bar, Moretons restaurant and reception area. We are currently upgrading most of our 190 bedrooms and corridors and would hope to start work improving our leisure and spa facilities shortly. We would like to thank this guest for their review and look forward to welcoming them back to Tortworth court.

First impression, fabulous location, second impression was the Reception staff - Gary (from Australia) could not be a better advert for this hotel.
This is a hotel where they are trying to find a niche for everyone and I'm not too sure this can be achieved.
They obviously offer tremendous value for money deals I.e. Dinner, bed and breakfast unfortunately , we weren't aware of them and paid the full rate - so a little annoying.
The rooms are fine, the meals are ok, nothing special. The swimming pool was really too small for the number of guests and I noticed families with young children had no small pool for the little ones. The sauna and steam room are more than 'a little tired'. Both my husband and I booked in for a massage and neither of us came away feeling it was special - it wasn't.
The hotel management need to decide who their target audience will be, they obviously have a core clientele within the local community who must be totally frustrated when they arrive for their evening/weekend swim/sauna etc and find the place has been taken over and they can't use the pool which was what I witnessed.
Sorry this is a rather mixed up review - bottom line? I wouldn't have this hotel on my 'a' list of must go back, rather on my 'I don't think I will go back'

We are sorry that this guest did not take advantage of the 72 hours sale that is available on the four pillars web site, (sign up and you will be emailed the offer every Wednesday for the hotel group) and felt a little annoyed at this. Our leisure facilities include a swimming pool; we do not have a child’s pool, Jacuzzi and gym which are all available complimentary to any guest staying at Tortworth Court. Our leisure facilities are also used by local residents and as members of the Peels club they are aware of the busy and quieter periods and use the facilities as required. Tortworth Court is a very popular hotel for business and leisure guests and we would hope to see this reviewer return. Thank you for this review
