“Fabulous relaxing welcome after a long bike ride”
Reviewed May 27, 2014

We had a wonderful warm welcome after cycling The Pilgrim's Way. There is a garage to lock bikes in. We had a minimalist style room which was ideal for our cycling trip. The stylish bathroom and endless hot water was a luxury. Our evening meal was delicious in the bar with a friendly atmosphere. Our Full English Breakfast was certainly one of the best ever. Locally made jam and other produce was on sale in the bar which contributed to the friendly local feel.

As a family of three we found the Kings Head to be a great place to break our journey to and from France via the Eurotunnel. The room was fine. The staff were fantastic. The food was very good. The only slight negative was no off-road parking, although we were able to park immediately outside on both nights.

Our room seemed typically English - small, wooden floors, a well functioning but not a practical shower (Europe should take a look at Asia and North America), and a bathroom that lacks shelving space. The bed was comfortable and room was clean. Room was easy to book. Reservation was reliable. Room price was good. Service was good too - They accommodated an early breakfast, when we put our order in the night before. The pub atmosphere was lovely. Food was GREAT. We enjoyed our one night stay. If I was a local, I would visit for breakfast - the food was really good. I will definitely stay again when I next visit Wye.

Very nice and "trendy" pub/ hotel with great friendly staff. Food great, clean and tidy, good value rooms with great breakfast. Points I would make.... Blinds in rooms
Look good but don't block out light so awake at 6.00. No response to food query.

The rooms are nicely done and the beds are comfortable. The water pressure on the top floor is awful which ruins the shower.
The pub does excellent food and at a reasonable price. Rack of lamb for £15 spot on!The staff were great and if I have the opportunity I will be back.

Room Tip: As for one with a decent shower

Food and drink at The King's Head are pretty good, but the accommodation is actually quite poor. The hotel has been recently rennovated but it's been done cheaply and they have taken the minimalist theme to the extreme, but without doing it well.
The accommodation area has been stripped bare, back to floorboards (though they left woodchip wallpaper on some walls and ceilings; it would be expensive to re-plaster), then everywhere has been given a coat of white paint, and floorboards varnished. The bedrooms are 'panelled' with what looked like painted hardboard and wooden battens, and then clothes pegs and hangers take the place of a wardrobe or even a rail. Orange crates take the place of bedside tables, and nothing takes the place of carpets (which are actually required due to gaps in the floorboards showing lights from rooms and spaces below). The bedroom door looks like it was kept during the renovation, but is cheap and ill-fitting. The fixtures and fittings are all cheap (taps, porcelain, even plug sockets are all budget items), and in our room there was no shower - just a free-standing bath with mixer-shower on the taps, but no screen or curtain (so you crouch in the bath and hold the shower over your head, trying not to splash the floorboards).

As I said at the start, food and drink are pretty good - nice coffee with breakfast - though you may or may not like the fact you order your breakfast items from the waiter/waitress (some people prefer a buffet). Dinner the night before was quite good, though vegetables were either lacking or very small in portion. And the staff/management are all very friendly and professional.

In summary, do not stay here if you are looking for comfortable, good-quality accommodation. If you like the modern/spartan approach, you will also be disappointed that the renovation has not been completed using the kind of quality materials and fittings that are essential to achieve this style succesfully.

Room Tip: Ask if there is a shower in your room - we had only a bath.

Cosy bar and restaurant, which show "character". Wooden floors in bedrooms. I wonder how mosquitoes are kept out in the bedrooms in summer. Friendly staff. Pity one has to order everything for breakfast at its start - what if you feel like having something more? We didn't get a lot of info at arrival.
Village: Not a lot of choice for an evening meal. Train station. Dangerous along the road; some public foothpaths could not be used.
