“Nice food, efficient service”
Reviewed July 26, 2013 via mobile

We dined with friends at The Kings Head on a busy Friday night. This was our first visit and we enjoyed it. The car park was full, overflowing to the neighbouring field - the first good sign. The hotel entrance is smart, with a grand piano (not in use) and a pleasant reception area. The dining room is off to the right, a large rectangular room, good sized tables, well laid out. We had a corner table for 4, and had parties of 8 and 10 either side, but the noise levels were quite acceptable. The room seems to have quite good acoustics.
We didn't have starters. Three of us had lamb rump from the a la carte menu, on a tart filled with creamed leeks and an excellent sauce. Perhaps it could have done with another green vegetable. I had fillet of pork from the specials menu, with vegetables and a grain mustard sauce. Very simple but nicely cooked and presented. The sticky toffee pudding, chocolate trio, and strawberry and mascarpone tart all looked very attractive and were nice without being sensational. There is a reasonable, fairly priced wine list.
The waiting staff were young, well turned out, friendly and very efficient. The food was served in reasonable time, given that the restaurant was pretty full.
The bill for 4 came to £110. We felt this was fair value for money, the meal and atmosphere were enjoyable, and we would return.

My partner and I stayed here on a Friday and Saturday night whilst the beer festival was on. We stayed via a Group on voucher which went very smoothly. The room was clean and you had all you required including a much needed fan in the hot weather.
The beer is charged about the same as most places but they seem to charge different for the same set of drinks. I was charged 4 different prices by 3 different members of staff.
The food is of a good standard and the steak was cooked to what I asked for which is a bonus now a days. Although I do think their prices for food is expensive for the amount that you receive.
My only gripe would be that we placed or towels in the bath to be changed by the cleaners to find that they had just hung them up on the back of the bathroom door. When I went to complain they immediately changed the towels and the lady expressed her apologies for the mishap stating they employed some ditzy people. Inspires confidence.....not really!
The other area to watch is the price for a bottle of wine. The 1 we had with our dinner was £35 which when I looked on line when back home can be brought for £15. Good job it was compliments of the hotel for the mix up with the towels.
The staff were all very pleasant even though it was a very busy time for them.

Stopped off here for a meal. having stayed here before I had expected good food and good service. Instead got a very expensive sausage and mash whose mash waa served cold and like glue and a waitress that clearly had issues on her mind as she was miserable. even overheard one lady ask her if she ever smiled! then having to wait 15 minutes for the food to be warmed up basically was just taking the micky. Have had better quality service and food at Weatherspoons!!!!! Come on. Get your act together. not worth the tenner each. was going to eat here regular but after that experience we ate at the nearby railway inn at docking instead.

I use the the Hotel on a regular basis and i would recommend it whether to just drop in for a pint or make an occasion and go out for dinner. The atmosphere, food, service and setting and are all very good and consistent. One of the few places you can reccomend with confidence.

As a regular of the Kings Head I would like to fully endorse Billy1946's review. I have always found the food to be a delight, and the attentive staff make dining in this hotel a joy. Very surprised to hear of table mix up, even more surprised to be advised to "be wary of the waitress in a white blouse!" In my experience there could not be a more charming and helpful leading member of staff, she and her team are a credit to this buzzing hotel, and I eagerly look forward to my next visit. Oh, and I hope to see the waitress in a white blouse!

My wife and I visited the Kings Head on several occasions whilst we were on holiday in Docking. We would call in here after we had been to other nice places in Norfolk. The take away food was delicious and very reasonable, so to finish off an excellent week we decided to reserve a table for the Friday evening at 7.15 . We confirmed this booking twice, when we arrived at 7pm we had pre dinner drinks in the bar. We then proceeded to the restaurant only to find our table had been taken! We told the head waitress that we had chosen this table especially, only to be fobbed with a feeble excuse and bad attitude saying we should pick another table. Having "picked" another table we ordered fillet steak with chips, which was very nice. I recommend this establishment if only for the take away food. Having said all this ,the manager was very apologetic and give us complemtary wine whis was nice. In conclusion be wary of the waitress in the white blouse !!!

Had a lovely, relaxing visit, in and amongst visiting the local stately homes. The hotel is set in a lovely, quiet village within easy reach of many attractions.

We received a pleasant welcome from the staff and a very enjoyable free cream tea - Hmmm!

Room Tip: The room was large with all mod-cons, and very comfortable.
