“Beautiful hotel, tranquil location but could be better”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2009

Stayed with my wife for one night and dined in the Library & Print room. The sylvin setting and tranquil location of this hotel is all that could be expected from a rural setting. The reception was pleasant, efficient and welcoming and the room excellent, tastefully decorated, very comfortable, clean and well appointed. Full marks so far.
Not wanting to eat late as I find I don't sleep well directly after eating, we had ordered dinner for 7.30 and arrived on time. The serving staff throughout were pleasant and very professional and the surroundings are wonderfully relaxed and certainly one wouldn't wish the service to be rushed. Nevertheless it seemed rather to be overdoing the nonchalance to extend the pre dinner drinks for a full 1/2 hour before seating us and a further 1/2 hour before serving the actual starter (which incidently was excellent). Main course (again perfectly cooked although my wife's lamb was slightly bland) arrived around 9.15 with the sweet menu being offered sometime after 10 pm. too late for us to ensure a comfortable night.
Breakfast was perfect and service was faultless although slightly ruined by the young man who greeted the guests constantly chewing gum.
Overall, on balance, a very pleasant stay, good food and a relaxed evening that nevertheless could have been a little better with quicker service and loosing that gum!

Spent 2 nights at this lovely hotel on a DB&B basis. We had 2 lovely spacious "Classic" rooms in the characterful original part of the hotel. The rooms were large, light and decorated tastefully in country house style with expensive soft furnishings. The bathrooms were huge by hotel standards and were elegantly appointed with "victorian" fittings and tiling. The beds were huge and so comfortable! I absolutely loved the architectural features of the hotel and was intrigued to read how the new conservatory was an exact replica of the old one. The Library restaurant was an absolute gem!- the food, the decor and the ambiance (thank goodness no wooden floors and leather chairs here!). Although the service was rather slow it did not detract from the whole experience. The Keeper's lodge food however was only so-so but an alternative for anyone short of time or not wanting a full dinner. My teenage sons loved the whole experience of staying at such a beautiful hoteland made use of the pool, driving range and par 3 golf course. The setting of the hotel is idyllic - both the golf courses and the estate village with its stream, shop, tearoom, pub and church.

We held our Wedding Reception at Matfen in May 2008, and we couldn't ask for better.

From the day we first viewed Matfen, all the way through the the Wedding Day itself, we were in awe of the location, and the staff were second-to-none.

I stayed the night before the Wedding, and of course on the Wedding Night, and my only regret is that we didn't have time to make the most of the amazing Bridal Suite.

The food was top notch - from the sample dinner, through to the Wedding Breakfast itself, the evening buffet and the full English the next morning.

I would highly recommend Matfen. It's a great hotel with really friendly staff in a peaceful location, with amazing grounds. Definitely worth the money.

My husband surprised me with a two night stay at Matfen Hall, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. The hotel is lovely - a beautiful historic building in a lovely rural location, with great facilities. The pool and spa were clean and well-designed and well-appointed. Whilst my husband enjoyed a round of golf, I was treated to a massage. The food in the library restaraunt was really exceptional, as was the wine, and the service. We would definitely go back, and highly recommend it.

  • Liked — It provided a truly relaxing, high quality getaway.

We stayed at Matfen for the second time on the 29th and 30th of September. We had booked the summer special at £110 per night with £25 allowance per person for dinner. We had a fantastic time from start to finish.

Check in - very friendly and efficient, we had paid for an upgrade and requested room 36 and had also e mailed ahead for dinner reservations at 8:30pm both nights which is exactly what we got.

Room - as I mentioned we had requested room 36 which is around in the new end of the building. The room is huge and very nicely decorated with a huge bed. Room was very clean and provided everything we needed.

Spa and Pool - we used the pool and the fire and ice facility on the first afternoon and although there were some children at the pool it was no problem. If we had wanted to avoid this we could have used the pool earlier in the day before schools let out and and the kids arrived. I had a facial and my fiance had a hot stone massage at the spa, these were nice but not anywhere near as nice and luxurious as the serenity spa at Seaham hall.

Keepers Lodge - we used keepers lodge which is the golf club house, a couple of times for afternoon drinks, morning hot chocolate and lunch. It has a lovely warm and comfortable atmosphere and the food was outstanding.

Library and Conservatory - we arrived to the bar both evenings around 8pm. On ordering drinks we were asked if we were dining in the library. On the first night the bar was quite busy so we were offered the option of taking our drinks to the drawing room where we were looked after by restaurant staff who took our order and showed us to the table. The food was fantastic, with lots of little extras like canapes and sorbet in between courses. The second night was just as good.

All in all the whole experience was fantastic and while the staff in all areas of the hotel were brilliant I have to say that the team in the restaurant were outstanding. We can't wait to go back.

I love Matfen Hall. This is the second time we have stayed there for a night and really enjoyed it.

Room: average size but nicely decorated, very clean and lovely bathroom. Good facilities.

Spa: leaisure facilities are lovely. V Clean and pool good size. I had a hot stone massage which was excellent.

Food: Sadly I had not booked ahead for an evening meal in the restaurant and they couldn't squeeze us in so we missed out this time around. Had previously eaten there and found the food to be gorgeous. This time we had to eat in the Keepers Lodge which was fine. Good menu in there, good service and the food was great. Breakfast was great. Great service, great food and lovely breakfast room.

Overall. It all seems very calm at Matfen - even though the hotel was obviously busy the service didn't suffer. I would definately recommend this hotel and can't understand the negative comments (especially about the cleanliness and service!!)

  • Liked — The hotel in general - calm and relaxing
  • Disliked — that we couldn't get in the restaurant for dinner! Should have booked ahead!
