“Luxurious stay at Matfen”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

Stayed at the lovely Matfen Hall for my birthday with 3 friends on a special deal through an online booking agent, but even if we had paid double, I'd still have been delighted.
Our room was gorgeous and massive, the bed was super comfy and the bathroom was second to none with lovely toiletries.
The spa facilities were great with a good size pool, lovely jacuzzi and several different sauna/steam room options - you could easily spend the whole afternoon pampering yourself and despite it being a Friday afternoon, it wasn't too busy at all.
Dinner in the conservatory was brilliant - steak cooked to perfection and quick, friendly service.
Breakfast was even better with a huge selection and your own hot food cooked to order - I left absolutely stuffed!
Should also mention that the surroundings and views are beautiful too - everything about our stay was just perfect and relaxing and I'd come back in a heart beat.

My wife and I spent two days at Matfen Hall. We arrived mid afternoon to be greeted with a warm welcome from the staff, check in was quick and hassle free and our baggage was taken to our room. The room was a standard double but finished to a very high standard, it was spotlessly clean and contained everything you could need. Most of our time was spent relaxing either in the jacuzzi, pool and steam room etc which were fantastic. We noticed advertising of spa treatments offering up to 30% off, it would have been nice to have either known this in advance or on arrival. On our first night we ate in the conservatory which was very nice but the menu had very little choice, also the price of drinks was ridiculously expensive. Second night we ate in the keepers lodge which is slightly misleading as it is quite simply a golf club house, however the food was fine and drinks seemed slightly less expensive. Breakfast in the library each morning was very nice, good choice and obviously used quality local ingredients. Overall fantastic experience in a beautiful location, friendly well mannered staff and the ultimate relaxing break away.

Dear Guest

I am pleased your recent stay at Matfen Hall was relaxing and you were able to enjoy our Spa facilities during your stay.

I take on board your comments regarding advance notice of Spa treatments and shall discuss this with my Spa & Leisure Manager.

The Keepers Lodge, is our golf club house and gives guests the option of a relaxed ‘pub’ like atmosphere, to dine or simply have a drink.

Thank you for taking the time to share with us your comments and I look forward to welcoming you back to Matfen Hall in the near future.

Yours sincerely

We stayed at Matfen Hall a few weeks ago. Upon arrival we were greeted by the smiling reception staff and were made to feel like returing family, even though we've never stayed before. Our room had everything a modern luxury room should have which was complemented with a splendid overtone of history and old world attention to detail that we hadn't seen before on our travels. We originally booked Matfen for a dinner and an after dinner show by Brendan Healy. The food and service was of such a high standard that we both said havent encountered outside of London. We dined in a grand hall that wouldn't look out of place in Windsor castle. The comedian , Mr.Healy was the funniest we've ever seen and instead of just doing the normal 30 minutes after dinner speech, he treat us to the most hilarious 90 minutes of an act which had everyone in stitches. The only down was that the bar service was slow, but that didnt bother us or anyone else as drinking heavily wasnt the order of the night. It wasnt that sort of place or night. This is definetely somewhere we'll be going back to. Worth every penny, what a find.

Room Tip: due to the number of rooms, book early

My wife and I spent last weekend enjoying the splendour and character of Matfen Hall.
We arrived mid morning with a heavy frost still spread over the extensive grounds and golf course surrounding this beautiful old house .... we truely felt we had escaped to another.
We lunched in the conservatory bar which was very pleasant before checking into our lovely deluxe room on the first floor ... sadly not able to make full use of the balcony due to the time of year.
Our afternoon was spent intially relaxing in the pool and spa area which was nice but not the best we have experienced.
Our hotel deal included a 1 hour treatment and we opted for the full body exfoliation followed by a back masage complete with hot oils .... absolutely devine !!
After champagne in our room we ventured down for our evening meal. Our pre drinks in the drawing room and meal in the Library restaurant was like stepping back in time .... or going to Hogwarts !! The food was good but not exceptional - my main course chicken was somewhat dry and my wife's pork dish was overseasoned .... but we did enjoy the whole experience.
Breakfast was served in the Library also.
We made the most of the 11am checkout but did not opt for revisiting the spa which was offered for the whole day of departure.
Throughout our stay the staff were superb - courteous, attentive and faultless.
We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend treat at Maften Hall, slightly let down by the spa facilities and the evening meal but a good choice for sure !!

We got a great bed and breakfast deal through Secret Escapes.

For the money paid, Matfen Hall is everything you could want. I'm not sure we'd pay the full price but for the sake of this review that's not an issue.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the rooms were classically lovely and comfortable, the food (we were in the conservatory) was delicious and the spa was great.

My husband and I used this break as a romantic trip (child free!) and will definitely be back.

This is a gorgeous retreat in the North East just 15 miles from Newcastle and the wonderful shopping at the metro centre. Beautiful house crammed full of historical interest and an amazing spa. Rooms are spacious and well equipped and the staff are very warm and welcoming. Restaurant served the most gorgeous food - amazing choice at breakfast and the lightest white chocolate and blue berry cheesecake I have ever tasted! Just gorgeous and definitely getting a 2nd visit from us.

Room Tip: 54 which was a great sized double with gorgeous views over the garden 33 which was a suit - spacio...

We stayed for two nights in January and had a great time. The staff were all lovely and extremely helpful. The hotel is a magnificent old house in beautiful surroundings and the food was exceptional. The banana soufflé with chocolate sauce was devine. The swimming pool was nice and I had a relaxing massage. We got a deal so didn't pay full price which would have been quite expensive but overall I would definitely recommend a stay here.
