Stayed here with a party of friend on a b&b and evening meal deal.
We know the hotel quite well as we live near by.

Good points
Food in the main restaurant is very good but a bit expensive unless you are on a deal. It is important to book a table in advance to guarantee a seat in the main restaurant and at the time you want.

Breakfast very good, with a good choice.

Our room was very good, although as other reviewers have said, the rooms can get hot.

Bad points
The beer is expensive, with no real ale. Matfen village, which is only a short walk away has a nice little pub with a better choice of beer. Nice for pre dinner drinks.

Service for drinks can be slow at times.

Unless you are in the restaurant, the public areas lack atmosphere.

Overall - not bad, but expensive, and there are better value, similar quality venues in the region

First time we've been away for ages, got a special deal to stay at Matfen Hall for two nights, dinner, bed and breakfast. We had a great time, MASSIVE bedroom !!! Food was excellent and the staff were polite and very helpful. Check-in good, room quality good, dinner good, breakfast was lovely. We tried the leisure facilities, very impressed for a hotel leisure club. Didn't play golf or have spa treatment so cant really comment on that, but overall we loved this place. Situated in a lovely place - grab a coffee in the Conservatory and take in those views over the golf course. Very happy would go back.

Room Tip: Book from their own website for a good deal, keep an eye on their Twitter feed for last minute offer...

This is a poor spa offer. We booked MATFEN HALL to chill out and enjoy the spa facilities. They are very dated and poorly maintained. There was very little steam in the steam room, the salt and steam room was so poor I wonder if it was actually turned on! The shower didnt work and some of the controls were missing. The pool was pleasant, but looked nothing as good as it did on the web site. Poolside relaxation was limited ,as chairs and loungers were few and far between. Those that were available were mouldy. On finding an area to relax the view was of the rusty roof joints, rusty disabled lift ,and the coffee reception area that was seriously overcrowded. Sadly hooks to hang towels and dressing gowns hadn't been in the architects plans. The steam room had cracked tiles, and the glass door was so stiff on opening I feared it would smash. The lights in the steam room were 50%. Out and several mosaic tiles were missing. Mouldy silicone sealer was a redeeming feature.

The bedroom was nice, however it was hot ,even with the heating off, sleep was poor as the window opening was governed. The shower was not as hot as required both days. We found it hard to believe that the room looked onto the pool roof. Beautiful building and setting ,but the architect failed to bare this in mind when extending the accommodation. The bed was comfortable and nicely furnished, however there was no room for closeness as an uncomfortable gap between the two single mattresses kept us apart,

Now the food offer. Sadly the restaurant was full the night of our stay so we didn't experience this. As the hotel is in the middle of nowhere this left us with the conservatory, or keepers lodge. After sampling a beer in the conservatory, which lacked comfort and character, we decided to try the keepers lodge. Shock horror. The keepers lodge was nothing more than a posh porta cabin. Set out like a school dining hall or canteen. There were 13 of us in there, a table of 9 ,and 2 couples. We ordered omelette and chips ,and a baguette and chips. The baguette sat on the hatch for ten minutes while the chips got cold. The waitress , barmaid, had to tell the chef the chips were getting cold. Ten minutes later my partners overcooked omelette appeared, covered and disguised in melted cheese. Sadly the chefs were on full view , they appeared unkempt a new uniform and a shave wouldn't go a miss. We did complain about the omelette and the chef did agree it was poor. We were compensated with 2 free drinks, at £4 a pint this was well received. The sticky toffee pudding looked tempting but after expressing our view on the omelette we opted out.

Only one way to end the experience ,afternoon tea. The receptionist kindly requested a gluten free selection for my partners tea ,of which looked appetising on arrival at the table. Sadly on trying to eat the raspberry buns they were stale.. Emma kindly spoke to the chef who sent better replacements and a blueberry cheesecake. On a positive note the staff were very nice helpful and I felt sorry for Emma who had to tackle the chef about her buns.

There were some positives, the library room for breakfast was nice and looked out onto the golf course. All of the staff were very helpful and pleasant special thanks to Emma at afternoon tea.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view.

Stayed here on Friday 25.01.2013 for one night Dinner Bed and Breakfast.
Check in was really good arrived early at 1-30pm our room was available so they checked us in straight away which was really good the room was lovley and had a great view of Matfen.
Ventured out in the snow and visited the local brewery at High House Farm only a few minutes drive away being a real ale fan this was like heaven to me.
The room was very hot but the climate control did not seem to work so even in -4 degrees and about 6 inches of snow opened the door to the balcony and left it open for some time.
Dinner was booked for 8pm so went down for 7-45 they took our food and wine order but did not bring our wine to our table in the lounge we sat down for dinner at 8-35 and dinner did not get served until 9pm so we waited for an hour and they did not even apologise.
When dinner did arrive is was excellent probably the best three course meal that I have had.
Slept well and went down in the morning for a nice breakfast.
All in all really enjoyed my stay here but the service lets it down.
Very expensive would try else where next time.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review following your one night dinner, bed & breakfast stay with us. I am sorry of the problems you had with the heating in your room. Unfortunately, we were experiencing problems with the heating system, which has now been rectified.

I also apologise for the slow service you received during dinner, but thank you for your kind words regarding your meal, which I will ensure are passed through to my Head Chef and his team.

I do hope you will visit us again in the future.

Took my Girlfriend here for her 22nd birthday and upgraded to the 'deluxe style room'. In all honesty, for £230.00 a night, I was expecting full blown refinement and at least something to blow me and my partner away a little, but, I guess it was just average, what you'd expect if i'd have paid about £90.00 or so.
Spa facilities where second to non, no criticisms there. Treatments on offer are great and prices are reasonable.
As for the evening meal, well, it's a little ropey to be honest, we seemed to find that it was either dine in the 'Restaurant' or... nothing. The keepers lodge is essentially like a Cafe, the conservatory was adequate for an evening meal but lacks in a massive amount of potential. The menu for the 'restaurant' is released upon arrival in the evening, so this completely ruled out my partners dietary requirements let alone if there was even going to be something nice on there.
The cooked breakfast was very nice indeed and there was a good selection of pastries and fruit available.

I'd visit this place again ONLY for the right price I feel i've paid for a visit here that wasn't up to the price tag, for one night, I feel incredibly let down, I could have been on a beach in spain for a few days for what I paid for a room!

Room Tip: Rooms on front, 'Style deluxe rooms' are average, don't go expecting the world for upgra...

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to share with us your comments, following your recent stay at Matfen Hall.

We have three very different menus on offer, which we find accommodates most people’s requirements and we always cater for any special dietary needs and do so on a daily basis. Thank you for your comments regarding your breakfast.

I am sorry that you felt let down with the standard of your room, rates can vary and are dictated by demand.

Once again, thank you for your comments and I do hope you will decide to return to Matfen Hall at some point in the future.

Went to matfen hall for a night away from everyday life and it did not disappoint! ! The room was lovely, spacious, clean and luxury toiletries in the bathroom, The grounds are extensive and when we were there covered in snow, gorgeous!! Staff really friendly, helpful and made us feel really welcome. Food was truly delicious especially the mushroom soufflé starter! ! The falling snow and log fires provided perfect background for a winters night away, look forward to going back. Even managed trip to the gym which has excellent facilities.

Room Tip: Had standard room and it was lovely.
