“Really nice for a short break, great food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2012

Stayed here for a weekend break, booking at the last minute. The food and the beautiful setting are the best things here - there is a lovely restaurant and very extensive breakfast, and also loads of other options too, such as the Keeper's Lodge for bar meals, and a conservatory with lovely views of the grounds. I had a great massage in the spa, too. The rooms are comfortable, decorated in with a flowery, country theme and have modern, clean shiny bathrooms as well as nice features like exposed beams. The beds and pillows are warm and soft and our room did get quite hot overnight, so much so that we ended up opening the window. But aside from this very minor point we really enjoyed our stay and thought that the rate we paid was definitely worth a very nice stay in a very pretty location.

Just a really nice place.

Room, food and service were great.

If I were picky, I'd say:

1. Get rid of nylon shower curtains (esp in better rooms). Yeuch!

2. Get those gorgeous open fires lit a little earlier on cool September evenings.

Thank you.

Having visited Matfen hall on numerous occassions I can still say the same as I would have previous... Breathtaking!

Such a grand building complemented by wonderful rooms and friendly staff!

Arrived at Matfen on this occasion for a friends hen doo. Matfen were great from the organising of the activities to the feeling of relaxation experienced in the spa! Weekend ran smoothly!

Would definitely recommend!

The Hotel is in a lovely location overlooking the Golf Course. We stayed on a Sunday Evening and had Afternoon Tea and Evening Meal included in our package. Our room was in the older part of the Hotel and was lovely. Small suggestion would be to put fresh milk in the fridge as standard instead of UHT. Bathroom was lovely...all in all the accommodation and the Hotel itself was really beautiful. The afternoon tea was pretty basic. Sandwiches were lovely, but no real pastries or special cake...and loose leaf tea would be a nice touch instead of tea bags. The real let down of the stay was the waiting staff in the Library Restaurant. No offer to carry our drinks etc through when our table was ready, Had to ask 3 times to have our wine opened, plates thrust in front of you, leaning across me to collect plates. Just lots and lots of silly things that would be so easy for them to correct with a bit of training. And then the cardinal sin was later in the evening when we were finishing our wine in the Drawing Room...the waiting staff all gathered round the desk taking it in turns to moan about the guests! Overall impression we left with was that the staff were just indifferent. It was a real shame, as our meal was pretty good. Bit of a let down really.

2 day break booked through Spabreaks.com. Absolute bargain @£99 (min two people) 3 course a-la-carte Dinner, Bed and Breakfast and Spa Treatment with use of all facilities (Pool, Gym etc.) for both days.

Stayed in 'Classic' room in the new part of the Hall. Lovely big room and although 'new' still had style and comfort. Dinner was a lovely experience with fabulous food and atmosphere and Breakfast was also fantastic with the usual suspects plus wonderful Craster Kippers on offer! Spa treatment also top-notch with freindly Therapists and excellent attention to detail (I was once a therapist myself so I know what to look for). Staff all freindly and non-invasive but equally happy to answer questions and offer service as required.

The only thing that does not give the review 5 stars is that the pool/spa area does need upgrading - a little dated and some of the areas not fully functional. Very clean though (again essential in this area) and drinks were very expensive (on saying this we had a fabulous bottle of wine at dinner for £25 and there were others over £100). Glass of wine and a Guiness from Conservatory Bar almost £11 however ....

I would definitely go again. Was truly a great bargain and escape.

Thanks to all. Leanne and Nick Hendry.

Room Tip: We had the 'basic' Classic room which is more than sufficent for a one night stay but would...

We treated ourselves to a stay at Matfen Hall after visiting Go Ape which is located within the grounds.
We stayed in room one which was large, well appointed and had superb views across the golf course and grounds. Shortly after arriving we had afternoon tea in the Drawing room, which was gastronomical with a great choice of sandwiches, scones and flapjacks.
After an hours rest the swimming pool and sauna beckoned; the sauna and steam room were a little disappointing; the Sauna was small and the steam room has had better days. The pool, although quite shallow was adequate for a few lengths.
The Library Restaurant is furnished to a very high standard and the food was delicious.

Throughout our short stay, the staff could not have been more friendly and helpful.

Overall, we would definitely recommend Matfen Hall to couples seeking a romantic break with relaxation and fine dining.

Room Tip: Room one was superb.

Hotel is beautifully situated and overlooks the golf course. Had a one-night/two golf rounds package, only spoiled by the rain which prevented playing on the second day. Ate evening meal in The Keepers Lodge, which is basically the golf clubhouse, but found the meal choice really good and food was delicious and well presented. Breakfast in the main restaurant in the hotel was very good also, but can't coment on any other meal there. Found the golf quite testing, but would be more savvy in what to expect on next visit. Spa looked great but didn't have time to test this out.

Room Tip: Basic rooms are in newer wing, but spacious and comfortable.
