We were travelling from Birmingham to Cancun and had booked the Manor Hotel Meriden for the night prior to the flight through Holiday Extras. On arrival at the Manor Hotel we were informed (somewhat brusquely) by the Receptionist that a conference meeting had over-run and that the rooms we had booked were no longer available as they needed the rooms for those attending the conference. They stated they did not have any details to enable them to contact us to inform us about this (???? We have stayed there previously on several occasions.) No apology, just a statement of fact, they decided that the people whose conference had over-run took precedence. (I can quite understand their reasoning, but felt decidely peeved that they did not have the decency to apologise for the inconvenience caused to us.)

Anyway they had booked us into Strawberry Bank Hotel just up the road.

When we arrived at the Strawberry Bank Hotel, the lady who greeted us was very polite. We were given our room key and asked about getting an evening meal (it was about 9:35). She stated that the restaurant should be closing shortly but she would ask if they would keep it open longer for us. We were informed that breakfast was included in the rate and told where this would be served. Not wanting to create a fuss we asked for the menu there and then, and chose our food. We then took our cases up to our room and came straight back down to the restaurant.

The food and service was excellent, they certainly did not rush us, and although we had pre-ordered, they waited until we arrived in the restaurant so that the food was freshly cooked (much appreciated when you order fish!). After the meal we went for a quick drink in the bar before retiring. We found all staff went out of their way to help us. .

The room itself was basic but clean. We certainly had everything that we needed for an overnight stay. There was a kettle and tea and coffee available, the bathroom was fully supplied with toiletries and there was the all important hair dryer. There was a TV in the room. If we had been staying for a longer period perhaps the lack of storage space might have been an issue.

The next morning, they had a table laid out with the usual cereals, juices, etc., for guests to help themselves, and we were pleasantly surprised that there was waiter service and we could order virtually any breakfast we required. The food was very good, everything freshly cooked and tasty instead of the usual breakfast buffet arrangement.

The important question - would we stay there again? We certainly would for the following reasons:

1. The room, although dated, was perfectly acceptable for an overnight stay.
2. The cost was much less than The Manor.
3. Breakfast was included.
4. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
5. It is very convenient for the airport.

In view of the cost, quality of food and service we received I consider this hotel to be very good value for money for an overnight stay.

We had the misfortune of visiting this place for Christmas Day lunch 2011.

Admittedly, we had left it a bit late to book somewhere and after an extensive search (and finding everywhere else fully booked) we were pleased to find that the Strawberry Bank had some tables available. In hindsight we wish we hadn’t have bothered.

There was no glass of fizzy or mulled wine on arrival, and although the service was quite good, the food was absolutely dire. We were served frozen vegetables, anaemic roast potatoes (more like boiled) swimming in oil. Then there was the processed beef and turkey. A member of our party commented that the beef was like a boil in the bag variety and more than likely bought in large catering packs and not carved fresh from a joint. Same for the turkey, which was dry and tasteless. At no point were we asked if we were enjoying the meal or if everything was ok. Oh, and I mustn’t forget the very cheap serviettes and Christmas crackers!

The dessert was probably the best part of the meal, although obviously pre-prepared and bought in (more than likely from Costco, where they seem to buy everything else from).

Overall we all felt disappointed and cheated after paying £280 for the five of us (excluding any drinks). I personally still felt hungry when I left and it was certainly an experience not to be repeated. A total let down and will go back to cooking Christmas lunch at home next time.

What a great package - certainly value for money.
Staff are a credit to the hotel, so friendly and helpful ensuring our NY celebration was comfortable and fun - thank you Pat for instigating the conga!!! DJ excellent - tailored music to age group and time of night. Considering chef was catering for a large party, goat's cheese starter tasty, steak tender, chicken succulent and tiramasu to die for -well done. The complimentary glass of Champagne at midnight was a thoughtful touch.
Although room/bathroom is a little oudated, bed was comfortable, room was clean with nice little touches such as tea/coffee making facilities, trouser press etc.
Would certainly recommend booking the NYE package.

We have just stayed over and enjoyed the New Years Eve Gala Dinner and it was fantastic! Food was delicious and service excellent, I recommend the home made Tiramusu. The rooms were very clean and with a lovely view of the garden, breakfast was nice and staff were so friendly and a credit to the hotel.
I recommend this hotel and to give the New Years Eve Gala dinner a visit as it was wonderful
Only one thing I would say is the hotel needs a bit of updating, just to be more modern but it is comfortable as it is also.

Just spent a night at this Hotel after going to the NEC for the motorcycle show and can't complain. It's in a very good location and easy enough to find just a 10 minute drive from the NEC and the National Motorcycle museum. The rooms are a good size and very clean, yes they are a little dated and the bathroom is not the latest design but it was all clean and for the price I paid I am very satisfied. On balance I think that this is a great place for a short stop over either on business or for leisure purposes and I would stay again or recommend to a friend.
