Highly recommended by the Coach House in North Stainley.

The Fox & Hounds in Carthorpe is the quintessential country pub with roaring log burning fire, well stocked bar with a good selection of wines/beers/spirits and champagne by the half bottle.

We were warmly greeted by Vince, the owner, upon arrival. The bar was full of diners and the ambience was delightful.

The menu is varied and there is also a specials board, all of the food being locally sourced and seasonal. My husband had the duck filo parcels, followed by the game suet pudding which was packed full of game and served with red cabbage, chips, potatoes and a selection of vegetables. I had the dressed crab followed by sea bass fillets and stir fried vegetables.

The young waitresses were extremely attentive, and accommodating when we asked for further items, nothing was too much trouble. The food was extremely tasty.

We look forward to our next visit.

Work organised an excellent Christmas meal today the orders where delivered quickly by Sophie and Vince and the food was presented beautifully. The salmon and prawn starter was yummy with a lovely light creamy sauce and piped potato on top which was hot and golden. Then came the main sea bass on stir fry veg with cauliflower cheese, carrots, battered light parsnips and roast and new potatoes. Wow a taste explosion the seasoning was lovely and flavours light and succulent. The fish was cooked to perfection and so delicate, a pleasure to devour. Followed by Christmas pudding and brandy sauce, well a true taste of Christmas so, full of flavour and a real indulgence. The food was fabulous and what a lovely environment such a welcoming atmosphere.

The owner, who was serving behind the bar gave us a very warm welcome. The pub has a good range of beer and other drinks, including their home made lemonade, which (as last year) was lovely. They offered home made bread sticks on the bar, which looked odd but tasted super.

My husband had a Dover sole to start with, which he said was divine. I had a goats cheese tartlet with basamic vinegar onions in a little pot on the side, which was lovely. It was a good quality cheese as well :-)

Hubby had roast pork, I had the veg filo triangles with plum sauce. they came as last year with lots of veg, more on offer if we wished. We both enjoyed our meals.

The menu had lots of mouth watering options including a whole veggie section. Its so unusual for me to be stumped as to what to eat due to so many choices. Most places really do not cater for vegetarians so very well!

We spent about £50 on our two courses and drinks, the food was served quickly and the staff were very pleasant.

We would have taken photos of our food, but it looked too good to wait even that length of time! :-D

I'm sure we will be back next year when we come up this way on holiday.

My husband and I visited for lunch on a Saturday with our 11 month old son. The restaurant was busy as you would expect, but we were given a warm welcome and staff could not do enough for us, from allowing us to arrange ourselves and the highchair as we liked, to offering a plate of fresh nibbles and a bread roll for our son.

Then there was the food - perfectly cooked and perfectly delicious, delivered promptly and cleared quickly when we were finished. For two courses and drinks we had change from £40 - unbelievable for the standard of food.

Overall, you can do no better for service, wonderful food and excellent value. Plenty of parking as well!
