“lovely hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2007

this hotel was clean comfortable and very friendly staff. we were allocated a cottage room as one of us is disabled and we could manage the 3 steps ok. The heating was off at the time of registering due to a pressure drop but this was fixed in 2 mins and the whole stay was very enjoyable. A largish group was also staying and it seemed that this was not their first visit, by the sounds from the bar and lounge they all enjoyed their stay.

My wife and I had an excellent stay here between xmas 05 and the new year. Staff were very friendly and chatty, room was cosy, clean and warm (over ithe road from the hotel itself, in an annex), and the bar food was very good too.
Would definitely return.

The slightly reduced price we found on the web made this hotel seem a sensible choice for our stay in the York region - after all the pictures made it look quite classy. Lesson number one - the camera can lie...

To be fair, the village is lovely and the outside of the hotel is pretty enough with some seemingly well-kept grounds. Inside, too, we were quite happy intitially - real fires and a fairly cosy ambience were welcome on a pretty miserable night. First impressions seemed like they were going to be enhanced when we were told that the four-poster room was free. How nice we thought - an upgrade. Yes, there was an upgrade on offer but, as it then transpired, we were expected to pay extra for it. Now, I don't routinely expect something for nothing but it is not that unusual to be offered upgrades (if you're lucky) by hotels and airlines and it generally makes one well-disposed towards the company in question. But then putting your hand out and asking for more money, I can tell the management at he Worsley Arms creates the opposite effect. Very bad customer relations in my book. If you don't want to give it for free then don't offer it.

Negotiating our 'upgrade fee' left a bit of a taste in the mouth but not as much as the pretty horrific smells of damp and goodness knows what emanating from some parts of the corridor. Luckily our room (presumably the showpiece room?) did not smell like that but nor was it quite as luxurious as it should have been. The carpet was very stained and the bathroom was in need of some fairly basic repairs (toilet seat, bath plug, shower screen) plus some redecoration. However, the worst aspect of the place was only revealed when we came back on the second day to find that the bedroom had not been properly cleaned and the bathroom had not even been touched. On check-out I mentioned this but received no real apology and certainly no offer of compensation. Nor did I get much of an apology when I pointed out that they had overcharged us (and were quite reluctant to believe it).

On the plus side, the food was good and there was a pretty resonable wine list with helpful advice on hand. The serving staff we met were also friendly and service was prompt.

Overall, I would suggest that this place works more successfully as a restaurant than as a hotel. Paint peeling off in the rooms and the corridors, the pervasive smell of damp and issues regarding cleaning make the prices that are being charged impossible to justify in my book.

We had just had a huge roofing job done at home and were REALLY ready for a week's break during the July heatwave. We had booked one night in West Yorkshire (see review elsewhere) and were looking for somewhere close to York for a couple of days before heading for the North-East, but as this was a last minute booking, we couldn't find anywhere really close to York, so in desparation we went through ----.com.

The hotel looked lovely on the website. We got a last minute deal. Two nights in an "Executive" room for 95GBP per night. On first inspection, the hotel reception/guest lounge/restaurant looked tidy and rather elgant, although we had to wait an absolute age for someone to check us in.

As we headed upstairs along a warren of corridors, I started to get that certain sinking feeling. We were shown to a room facing the carpark at the back of the hotel looking across the flat roof of the kitchens. It was a stonkingly hot day during the heatwave, and the room was cooking. To access the room, the cleaner's cupboard was on your left, and you went on through "your" glass door (the glass being of only marginal obscurity with a window beyond) into a short corridor/hallway arrangement. One turned left out of this corridor into a bathroom with overhead shower (the heat and the smell of damp was overwhelming). You turned right into the bedroom. We were immediately struck by the heat, the damp, and the dowdiness of this room. The carpet was badly stained and thin/worn. The decor was tired, with peeling wallpaper, and the bedding was cheap; synthetic covers, and indeed they were also rather tatty and careworn. This looked nothing like the pictures on the website! It was so hot and stuffy that the first thing I did was to try to open the windows. However, the sash was broken on the only bedroom window. The window in our "hall" stayed 1/3 open after a fashion, so it was VERY stuffy in our room and I could only sleep by soaking a towel in cold water and draping it over me as I lay on top of the bed, to try to cool off by evaporation. The bed was rather hard and lumpy. The room had a sad, rather tired, 1970's feel to it.

I can only think that the fact that it was a "King-Size" bed was supposed to give it an "Executive" rating. However, this "King Size" was just two single beds pushed together, which meant that one of us always had the "seam" underneath us. We work away from home, so a dataport was a selling point...except that it didn't work! So... we would have to take the laptops to the guest lounge, log on, get email and then return to our room to process it.

The bathroom was not nice. Besides being very, very damp and smelly, the small sash window was "painted" shut. I love a soak, whatever the weather, and this was not a pleasant experience in the heat and humidity. Despite a minimal lick of paint having been applied in the past year or two, this was still a pure 1970s bathroom. It was down at heel and dowdy.

Getting TO the bathroom was a pretty fraught experience too!! I do not do nightwear, particularly in 90 degrees. To get from the bedroom to the bathroom meant a "dash" across the corridor, hoping someone would not get a flash of me or the hubby in the buff as we went. Anyone using the cleaning cupboard (a large walk-in job in regular use during the day) could see pretty clearly through the glass door. I am a very private person and hated the lack of privacy. The window in the hall DID open after a fashion, providing SOME ventilation. However, to benefit from this in the bathroom meant having the door open. This meant that I was sitting in the bath watching cleaning staff go to and from the cupboard!

On the plus side, the two meals we had in the Cricketers Bar were excellent and very reasonably priced. Our lavender farm and York excursions partly made up for our room. The main hotel restaurant seemed rather "overstuffed" and expensive, given that the food was essentially the same as in the bar. Breakfast was fairly good, though nothing special.

We would have been better chancing it on finding a local farm B+B and just taking evening meals at the hotel. The village IS lovely, and it was pleasant to walk through to the church through the village after dark. The gardens of this hotel are really rather nice too.

To conclude, we got a dreadful room. To call it "Executive" was a joke. Maybe it was the last one in the hotel..the "last resort" room they drag out for the late bookers. Even at the ---.com price it was the worst rip-off. It would not have been worth 30 quid a night in my books.

WHEN I was able to find someone to answer my queries re. the state of the bathroom, the lack of a dataport, and the general unhappiness I felt about our room, no-one seemed particularly interested in listening or offering any sort of compensation.

IF the hotel owners want to "prove" to us that they can supply us with a better room experience, we would stay again (it seems from reviews here that there ARE nice rooms in the place), but we would only be prepared to pay half price for a room to compensate for the abysmal experience we had back in July.

  • Liked — Excellent food...great value and ambience in the Cricketers Bar
  • Disliked — Awful bedroom and even WORSE bathroom

We have spent a miserable weekend in this tired and overpriced hotel.
We had booked a room to celebrate our wedding anniversary which will one we will not forget in a hurry. No complaints about the lovely lady who welcomed us a reception but downhill from there. We were allocated room12,the first thing to hit you is the overwhelming smell of damp, coming from the bathroom. The window in the bathroom would not open, unsure if this was saftey issue or poor maintenance.
The room itself had stained carpets, marked and badly scuffed paintwork and was generally tired. The cleanliness left a lot to be desired, we actually swept the cobwebs off the door and the sockets had a thick accumulated layer of dust on them. Add to this sheets with holes in them and the £155 a night price tag began to feel like a rip off.
The whole experience spiralled downwards, the Saturday receptionist proudly declared she had no idea about local restaurants as she was "not from round here". She did provide a telephone number of a restaurant in Helmsley which she retrieved from the internet somewhat reluctantly.
When we returned late afternoon on Saturday our room had not been cleaned, when I spoke to the cleaner she was very rude. I said it was my intention to speak to reception and was told "do as you like I'm busy". At least the customer service was consistently bad.
Credit to the hotel owner who rectified the situation but by disappointment had been replaced by anger at our treatment.
We didn't eat at the hotel, the breakfastwas lacklustre and undercooked, although the Sunday attempt was better.Neither breakfast inspired us to book an evening table.
Checkout was equally dismissive, when I raised the issues with the receptionist she did offer to pass by comments on but not convincingly. When we asked what would be done she informed she also "had no idea".
To finally add insult to injury my e mail of complaint has been ignored. This should not suprise me, but this standard is not reflective of the price.
