“Fabulous - as always....”
Reviewed July 13, 2013 via mobile

Another great stay at this charming, family run hotel in one of the most beautiful, yet least-known parts of North Yorkshire.

Tony and Sally Finn and their excellent team always make a stay here extremely pleasant, and nothing could be too much trouble for them. This is our 5th or 6th stay - always with our two dogs - and we have never been disappointed.

The amazing weather last week meant that we could enjoy the garden for the first time (we normally stay in the winter), and a cool beer while chatting to the other guests after a long walk went down wonderfully well.

The bedrooms are great, both in the main hotel and the cottages, and the sitting rooms and bar are spacious and never feel crowded.

However, perhaps the most stunning aspect is the food which always exceeds expectations - not only is there a great selection but this very definitely isn't typical Yorkshire pub fare - think top London hotel, probably in the Michelin guide, perhaps even with one star, and you'd be closer. A great wine selection, including a fabulous Riesling, and a lovely Elysium Muscat dessert wine, is a particular treat.

Overall - a really great stay in a fabulous, yet completely unpretentious hotel.

We will be back.

Thank you for your very flattering review.

The team both front and back of house try very hard to meet our guests expectations, if we exceed then that is all the more satisfying.

I am delighted that you enjoyed the Riesling, a new wine to the list which sadly will be dismissed by many. As a variety Riesling offers so much, but remains down the pecking order.

It is always nice to welcome back familiar faces, we are fortunate that we have such a high rate of returning guests, I always think that it adds to the homely atmosphere of our establishment and long may it be so!

We look forward to welcoming you back to Hovingham.

Regards
Tony Finn

We have just returned from our first (there will be more) stay at the hotel. The hotel is situated in a very quiet and pretty village close to the N Yorkshire Dales, Castle Howard and within striking distance of the coast.

We had a voucher for 2 nights B and B plus evening meal on the first night. We booked an extra night to make a 3 night stay which was worth it.

We experienced a very friendly greeting from Josh who took time to show us where the dining room was, where breakfast would be and where the bar and bistro was. We were then shown to our room ( no 10). A pleasant room with ensure on a lower level down some steps - really quite quaint. Facilities were good with well stocked tea and coffe and hair dryer and in the bathroom, the usual complimentary soap and shampoo and lovely large and soft towels.

We decide to have a drive to Helmsley on our first night and eat locally, of the two fish and chip shops in the town we managed to find the worse one! Helmsley was very interesting with the remnants of a young farmer steam and traction rally going on in the square which proved very interesting.

We did a lot of travelling to Scarborough and Whitby during our long weekend break, but received a warm welcome each evening back at the hotel. The main meal (on our anniversary) on Sunday evening was very good, although we then found the menu a little limited and repetitious and consequently ate at the Malt and Shovel the next night where for less tha £40 we had a reasonable 3 course meal and wine.

Breakfasts at the hotel we very good quality and no issue over choices again staff were very helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

Overall a very warm, inviting hotel and we enjoyed our stay and intend to go back. But (the infamous but) it was very hot when we were there and we had to have the bedroom windows open all the time to get air in the room (a fan was available on request which we had on our last night) and suffered from a leaking water overflow some 40+ feet above the ground and very close to our window. The sound of water falling to the ground through the night from this faulty overflow was very loud and kept us awake for most of the first two nights leaving us very tired. Ŵe kept the window closed on the last night and had the fan on all night which was better although not ideal. The owners have said they will look into this to have it fixed.

Room Tip: Avoid room 10 until the pipe is fixed if possible or ask for the fan on straight away and then have...

Dear DaveB

Thank you for your review.

I have delayed my response because I did not want to tempt fate, but I can report that the intermittent overflow problem seems to have been fixed once and for all!

I am sorry that your nights sleep was interrupted, and hope that it did not detract from your enjoyment. You certainly took advantage of the weather and packed in a full program.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Hovingham soon.

We called by on spec. We thought the hotel a little tired, our bedroom had very little fresh ventilation. It was a hot weekend, and we would have loved the window open. The staff were extremely friendly, found time to advise us...... They seemed to be be here, there and everywhere. Good at multi tasking. The food was quite delicious, almost too much. We loved sitting in the garden having our pre dinner drinks. Over all a pleasant few days spent in this charming and pretty village.

We stayed for 2 nights on a remarkably well priced bed & breakfast package. The hotel is charming with the kind of slightly faded chintzy comfort that can only be found in rural England ; plenty of comfy areas to relax in , a cosy bar & a smart dining room all complemented by a very lovely garden in which to relax & enjoy a glass or two of wine. Room & bathroom clean & well presented. What really sets this hotel apart is the friendliness & courtesy of the staff...they are exemplary & many a property could learn some valuable lessons from their service levels....special mention to Josh who was the consummate professional.

We stayed for one night & had a good time. We ate in the restaurant for evening meal, food was very nice. Small but cosy bar but fortunate enough for good weather so sat in the lovely beer garden. We didn't have breakfast as we were on a room only deal. The staff were very friendly & helpful, the room was very nice. Would stay again if in the area.

My partner and I, with our three dogs, stayed at the hotel for two nights. We were allocated a room in the cottage across the green from the hotel which was absolutely ideal for our dogs, although a room on the ground floor would have made it easier for the elderly one! The hotel staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. The food was excellent and the service attentive without being over-bearing. Our room was very comfortable and spacious and the hotel itself nicely presented. I have no hesitation in recommending The Worsley Arms to anyone, not least of all those travelling with dogs. Hovingham itself is a delightful place in a gorgeous part of the world; I am sure we will return for a more prolonged stay.

Room Tip: If you take a dog with you, as for a room in the cottage across the green

We have stayed at The Worsley on several occasions including the last two Bank Holiday weekends and were delighted on both visits. Hovingham is a beautiful little village. You'll need to drive to get to places, but there's lots to see and do within a short distance (if you can drag yourself away).
The first thing to mention is the staff, and how friendly, polite and helpful they are. The rooms are always clean and well appointed, with comfy beds (especially the 4-poster room!). Yes, in places it could be argued that the decor is getting a little tired, but this doesn't detract from the ambiance of the place.
The food and wine is always excellent, and very good value for what you get. Pace yourself, it's worth sampling 3 courses! Tony (the owner) has excellent knowledge of wines, and I would always recommend selecting your meal then asking him to bring what he things would complement it best - it will always be excellent, and the most appropriate, not the most expensive! Also the breakfasts are superb, using locally sourced produce.
The garden is beautiful on a summer day, and a perfect place to enjoy the sun and chat for hours with a cooling drink (or three).
As always on this site there are a couple of bad reviews. To be honest I find some of them hard to believe, and as for lack of mobile phone reception - hardly a reason to mark the place down - there's wifi available if you ask.
All in all, we can't wait to go back and would recommend strongly to others.

Room Tip: Superior are slightly better, and the 4 poster is great for a romantic trip (and very reasonable).
