Brickfields Farm
Reviewed September 20, 2009

Brickfields Farm provides an excellent B & B facility in a quiet rural and peaceful setting. Janet has achieved a unique B & B Brand by combining the higest standards of care, accomodation and service (the 'Wow' factor) with a comfortable, elegant, homely and calm atmosphere. This is topped by her par excellence cooking and presentation. Highly recommended.

Downside no menu choice at breakfast, only orange juice, no summer berries no yoghurts, vegetarian choice nil points. Older waitress showed no courtesy & no smile, younger one v pleasant. It's nice to help yourself to fruit that you want not what was ready put on your table, no other juice except orange which I don't like, asked for Apple they had none.

I'm not usually lost for words but Brickfields Farm was marvellous. What made it great was the small touches, the quality of the furniture, the fresh milk and water in the fridge(!), a spotless bathroom, towelling robes, an umbrella, a leather sofa and a 7ft bed! Mix that with Yorkshire countryside and you have the standard by which Farmhouse B&B should be marked. Single night stays are expensive - but still less than allegedly 4/5* hotels - and a huge room - some 20 ft square plus enormous bathroom. Breakfast was faultless and again with special touches - foot served separately from your dinner plate - allowed you to serve yourself rather than be faced with mountains of egg, bacon, sausage etc etc

We stayed for 4 nights in one of the barn rooms. Super room straight out of an issue of "House and Garden". Janet our host served up the most sumptuous breakfast which set us up for the day. Our room with the king sized bed was well equipped with a cosy leather sofa to admire the view.
Kirbymoorside is a quaint town and 10 minute walk from the farm. My advice is to get out into to the country for some evening meals. We had a super meal at Levisham in the Horseshoe pub we served great ale and super food.
Staying in other B&B will very hard now after the standard set by Janet.

Peaceful rural idyll

Located up a farm track, just on the edge of Kirkbymoorside, Brickfields farm is a gem. The only sounds you hear from the luxury of your super king-size bed is the sheep and Janet's guinea fowl as you look out over the terrace to the fields beyond. Your large room is well appointed with mod cons – flat screen telly, DVD player and fridge with bottled water and fresh milk for your tea/coffee are waiting for you when you arrive. The ensuite, complete with posh toiletries, would not shame a 5 star London hotel. There is a selection of DVDs, brochures, and nearby restaurant menus in a cupboard under the sink.

It is this attention to detail that sets Brickfields apart from your average B & B. Janet your hostess is attentive without being intrusive and serves you a splendid breakfast of fresh fruits, juice and a platter of local bacon, sausages etc with eggs of your choice.

Within half an hours drive, you have the beautiful North Yorkshire moors to explore, Castle Howard to feast your cultural eyes on and walk in the grounds, and several excellent restaurants close by. I would particularly recommend The Fox and Hounds at Sinnington and the Star Inn at Harome – 1 Michelin Star, so 3 figures for a 3 course meal with wine for two. Give the George & Dragon in Kirbymoorside a miss unless you value quantity over quality. Scarborough, York and Harrogate are also places you could visit.

Large and extremely comfortable rooms, very bright and airy, furnished in neutral colours. En-suite bathrooms have walk-in showers and are stocked with Gilchrist & Soames toiletries. Huge breakfasts. This is 21st century British B&B. Convenient for Moors and Coast, not too far from Castle Howard either (obviously you'll need a car for all of these).

Stayed in one of the barn rooms, the largest one; excellent room with everything you need including little touches such as yorkshire biscuits, sweets and fresh flowers. A lovely large wetroom with shower. Very comfortable large bed. Janet is an excellent hostess and really enjoys what she does. Look out for the extra special breakfast; just the job to set you up for a full days sightseeing. Don't be put off by the initial sighting of the farmhouse; it really is rather lovely when you get there! We would recommend eating out at The Fox and Hounds in Sinnington for an upmarket pub meal and The Blacksmith Arms at Lastington for a good down to earth pub meal (and interesting chats with the locals). The Appletree at Marton is up market, nice restaurant, everything nicely done, but restricted menu choice and a touch expensive.
