“Good food and good food, what's not to like?”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

This is a great pub serving excellent food, with a good selection of real ale and friendly staff. I recommend the Barnsley chops washed down with a couple of pints of Black Sheep. Even on a frozen Friday night in February, the rooms were all taken and the eating areas full.

We stayed here as part of our C2C, unfortunately the weather wasn't the best but our stay here was delightful. Food and accomodation were excellent and the staff were very friendly and attentive. would reccomend it to others also doing the C2C.

Room Tip: we stayed in a four poster which was very nice and reasonably priced.

Fantastic, historic inn with all the charm you'd expect - low ceilings and exposed beams, fireplaces, rich, dark wood. Cozy rooms, amazing pub. Great walks right out the door. Can't wait to go back! This would be a great place to have a family reunion or other function.

I've been going to The Lion at Blakey with my parents everly year for about the last 20 years, we try aim to get snowed in by going in february, but sadly havn't manged it yet... I cant think of anywhere better to get trapped in by the snow, open fires, thick walls, comfy beds, huge amounts of food and booze to guzzle! The staff are always friendly, and if youre willing to play musical chairs long enough, you can usually blagg the table near the fire. Rooms are well equipped and the bathrooms are always clean.
I love The Lion!

The place is well situated for walking diret from the Inn and accommodated at short notice a party of 12. I gather it cab be busy but we always managed to find an area to ourselves. Full of character and the walls covered in old things.
Food was plentifull (especially meat) and the vegetables simply cooked.

Room Tip: Go for the superior rooms if you need any space. Econony rooms tight on space. Narrow stairs and b...

four of us enjoyed good clear weather along the rail path to incline top at rosedale but the main aim of the day was lunch at the Lion.
once again the Lion exceeded our expectations with a fine three course lunch for £16 each.
great starters followed by a good choice of roasts wit fresh veg, Yorkshire pud etc anf then a choice from the dessert table. And what a choice!
anyne who says the Lion aint he best then i'm afraid you must ave your eyes shut.
I for one can't wait to go again.
keep it up Lion Staff, your doing the north proud.

We stayed in this pub after xmas and the staff were very helpful and provided us with a delightful meal in front of a cosy fire. The breakfast was good and my only complaint would be the bed probably needed a new mattress
