“The next best thing to home.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2012

This is the 3rd time that I have stayed in the Hotel Cristal and it has yet to disappoint me. I am there for work ((Boardercross and Skicross races) and have a strange schedule and the staff work hard to cater to my needs. It is a very short walk to the Bendola Telecabines, has a great ski room and more than ample parking for our cars and trucks.

The rooms are clean, modern (as well as warm enough in winter) and well furnished. The restaurant is excellent and the breakfast in ample. This is the nicest hotel I stay in during my many weeks on the race circuit and, for me, it's the next best thing to home!

This hotel lies at the end of road adjacent to a car park but noise it not a problem. We went to the hotel during the ski season and the hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the ski gondola. However there are 3 sets of steps up to the gondola (no lift available). The hotel hasa boot room and it is possible to ski back to the hotel via the tobbogan run. It is also possible to rent a ski locker at the ski lift (buy from the ticket office at the ski lift - 34 Swiss Francs per locker plus 20F deposit per week (fits 2 sets of skis and boots) - best to buy immediately on arrival as lockers were in short supply)

There is a restaurant at the hotel but is not run by the hotel. You can pay half board to the hotel (this is cheaper than buying meals separately) but you also need to pay for any drinks or a la carte meals at extra cost directly to the restuarant each night. Generally there is a choice of meals but some nights the HB option has one meal choice only.

Food was a bit limited for our family as main courses are generally meat plus some form of potatoe dish and virtually no other vegetables (but we have found this to be common in European hotels). Also note that grilled meat is cooked very rare so ask to be cooked well done if this is your preference.

WIne list was limited but local wines were good.

Although this is a hotel there is no separate lounge and bar other than a small seating area close to reception.

The hotel will arrange a taxi transfer to the local rail station or Sion Airport (approx 40 mins drive) but cost is approx 140 Swiss Francs each way. During the ski season the hotel will provide transport to either the St Luc or Zinal ski area once during a weeks stay free of charge. It is possible but not very easy to get to St Luc via the local post bus service but a service does run to Zinal.

The bedrooms are clean and well presented but we found the beds could be slightly more comfortable. As said previously noise was not a problem (in the winter at least) although our room was at the front of the hotel.

The reception staff were friendly and welcoming and spoke English.

Notes on Grimmentz
In general terms this is very traditional Swiss village with a lovely street with old wooden buidlings but there is no real centre to the village other than the ski lift and a shop and hotel. Most accommodaton is either chalets on the mountain side or apartments but again in a traditional style. Night life is very quiet but there is small crepery in the old part of the village. There is also a good Italian restuarant next to the ski lift and would recommend you to book a table during peak periods.

There is a swimming pool located near the gondola and is nice without getting busy.

As far as skiing is concerned this is small ski area compared to most other resorts but views are good and the lower runs run through the forest on the mountain. There is a mix of blue, red and black runs with some off piste skiing available. Proficient skiers may find this too limiting but good beginners and intermediates would enjoy the area. Note that the runs are not numbered and runs are named on the lifts they end up at which isn't very helpful until you know the names of the lifts. It was dissapointing that there are still quite anumber of button and T-bar lifts and took a while to wait and get to the top of the mountain. This may be deliberate policy to reduce the number of skiers visiting the ski area. There is one 4, one 2, and one 6 chair lift. The last run down to the village is quite difficult and gets very icy at the end of the day but beginners can use the tobbagon run to get down virtually all the way to the base of the gondolar lift or continue down to the road where this hotel sits.

There is self service restuarant at the top of the gondola (which gets busy during peak periods) and it is possible to reserve a table where a table service is provided (4Sf per person). Another restuarant is located between here and the peak of the mountain (only accessibel by ski) and another much smaller bar on another ski run. There are no restuarants or bars at the mountain summit which is a shame as the views are marvellous.

As with all restuarants in Grimmentz food is not cheap and a very basic lunch could set you back 80-90 SFr for 2 adults and 2 children.

An alternative is to make your own lunch using the Co-op located between the hotel and ski lift.

As said previously we used Sion Airport using Snowjet who fly from Stansted. Planes are 80 seats and our flight wasn't full and we went straight through check in at both Stansted and Sion.

The Cristal offers good value for money and, by Valais standards, has exceptionally friendly reception staff.

The room was poorly ventilated. My shoes, which I only used for going out for dinner, started smelling bad after a few days as they never got dry in the damp room. Turning up the heat helped with drying ski gear, but made the room very hot to sleep in.

Breakfast was very basic and the service was, even by Valais standards, consistently very unfriendly. Due to the bad breakfast experience, I chose to have dinner in outside restaurants and never tried dinner at the Cristal.

Next time I go to Grimentz, I will probably try another hotel.

The hotel is small and charming, the rooms are very clean and have lovely views to the mountains. The hotel is ideally situated close to Grimentz centre and not far from the lifts to the ski slopes. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The half board option is great value for money as the resort itself is very exspensive. Food was a good quality and variety. Would recommend this hotel and is ideal for a ski holiday.

From the moment we were picked up from the airport to the moment we were dropped off at the airport in the hotel’s executive mini bus our stay at Hotel Cristal was fantastic. We were made to feel welcome by all the staff who were both friendly and helpful.

The hotel is situated just a short walk away from the ski lift so after getting ready for a days skiing in the hotel’s ski room you are up on the slopes in no time.

The hotel itself is beautifully done out and the real fire in the reception area gives the place a homely appeal. The bedroom and bath room were both of good size and immaculately clean.

The restaurant was very good value for money with the Table d’Hote menu a bargain CHF33.

We would definitely recommend this hotel to our friends.

Our holiday was enjoyed by all mainly down to the hotel being so nice and in such a great Location. The hotel has recently been refurbished to a very high standard could not fault the acomadation and the atmosphere. We had an excellent size room with fantastic views over the mountains.

The restaurant and bar staff are very friendly and the service was always to a very high standard. We had a range of options available to us on the menu and a very competitive Table Dote Menu each night.

The hotel has a lovely seating area off the reception which has an open log fire, leather sofas, TV and music options and is the perfect place to wind down after a long days skiing.

We arranged a transfer with the hotel from the airport which made our trip so much easier. The last thing I wanted to do for our group was have to hire a few cars for them to be left outside the hotel and not being used during our stay. We got picked up by the driver in the airport arrivals in Geneva, we were helped with our bags and then led to a very nice minibus for our transfer.

From the hotel ski room in the morning we walk down the street less than 5 minutes and we are at the gondola. Once up on the Piste there is a great range of skiing for all ages and levels. We had a mixed party and the beginners found it a great place to learn and develop there skiing whilst the more experienced skiiers were raving about runs such as the black Lona Run and the small blue track that makes it possible to ski down from the top of the mountain right down to by the Hotel Cristal.

There are also other areas to ski on a day out we used the hotel minibus shuttle service to go to St Luc for the day where you can also ski to Chandolin. This service was great as the minibus seats all of us and has a ski rack to take all of our equipment much better than catching the local buses.

Everyone really enjoyed the holiday and we are arranging another trip to Grimentz and the Hotel Cristal very soon.

Hotel Cristal is a wonderful hotel which is very clean and extremely classy. The hotel has a very professional and happy staff who make you feel very welcome and important from the time you arrive until the time you leave. The views from the room are breathtaking with snow capped mountains in every direction. The food is prepared by a professional French chef who takes pride in every dish he makes and the Swiss wine is the best I have ever drank. Parking is never a problem. The really old historical part of Grimentz is only a walk away and has several gift shops etc. There is a lot to do such as skiing and sledging. Had a great time! Will take my whole family back next year!!
