“Wonderful location and staff!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2011

This is our second time there but with kids. They were wonderful from reservation through our stay! All of them very friendly, and especially kind to the kids (which is saying a lot in Europe!), the food was magnificent, we had Halbpension (so Breakfast and Dinner). Fantastic! The rooms were kept clean and warm with amazing views of the Matterhorn and right next to two great lifts to get you started in the morning. TV room has free WiFi or you can pay to use the internet. Sauna and steam room very cozy.
The mountains are amazing but more challenging than in the US for beginners, but the beginner slopes were perfect. It is wonderful that there are no cars allowed. Everyone is very friendly.

Room Tip: As for rooms facing Matterhorn!

I usually am afraid when a hotel gets only great reviews... but this place is really as good as the travelers said it was!
Nice rooms, great wellness center (with sauna and vapor bath, but open only until 7 pm), magnificent breakfast (great fresh breads, fruits and lots of hot dishes cooked upon request) and a general friendly and effective service make this place a perfect base to explore the nearby Aletsch Glacier, in a quiet town without car.

My husband and I, and a group of 9 other friends spent a week at the Bettmerhof in early March. We meet annually for skiing in different resorts, and enjoyed being able to literally ski from the front door of the hotel to the lift, then ski to 2 neighboring villages and back to the front door. Our room was very small - have to admit it - and some of our friends, especially those with single rooms, did a bit of grumbling. However, the beds were comfortable, we managed to store our belongings adequately, and we liked having a balcony with spectacular views as far as the Matterhorn. The management and staff were very professional and friendly and the food was excellent, with plenty of choice, even though it was a meal plan. We enjoyed lunch in the downstairs pizza restaurant a couple of times. There was free WiFi in the living room, where I could sit with my laptop. The village is charming, accessible only by cable car, and is very family friendly. We enjoyed the walking trails as well as the extensive skiing.

We were given a ride from the lift as promised and check in was easy. Chris was very helpful in all areas with advice and courtesy. The breakfast was a super buffet, as good as we had in our other 3 stays in Switzerland, with free eggs made to order. We ate twice in the Italian restaurant, downstairs, it was very good and Chris always checked to see we were happy. We had a corner room facing the mountains, it was an outstanding view of the mountains. The room was very clean, understated, more like a log cabin, but just what we wanted. It was super quite at night, and the wire less Internet worked perfectly in the relaxation room that had tables to play cards, and games for the kids. We never used the spa, but it looked to be clean and worth visiting.

I agree with another reviewer- the best kept secret ! Bettmeralp is a charming village where cows roam freely and where cars do not exist. The hotel is owned and managed by Chris, who gives his all to make certain that everything is perfect. The hotel has an Italian restaurant on the lowest level and a traditional one on the ground floor, but you can order off either menu. The food is wonderful at both! The breakfast buffet is plentiful and they make eggs to orfer. After a hard day's hike, the wellness area (sauna, steam, foot baths, chaises) is delightful. The rooms are clean and lovely and the views are spectacular. This area is a hiker and nature lover's paradise. We will return again to the lovely Bettmerhof!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2007

We spent one week in the town of Bettmeralp during July 2007 and spent all our time at the Chalet-Hotel Bettmerhof which we loved and plan to return to.

The Chalet-Hotel Bettmerhof provides excellent value for money and is living proof of why the Swiss are considered world leaders in the hospitality industry. We took a junior non-smoking suite on the top floor which was very generous in size and included a large balcony overlooking the Alps with views of the Matterhorn. If you are looking for the slick, modern, minimalist approach, this hotel is not for you. If you are looking for good old fashioned comfort in the Swiss chalet style, then look no further. The room had a sleeping area, sitting area with couch and chair, powder room with toilet and basin, and a bathroom which had two basins, a toilet and bath/shower. There was plenty of closet space to store our belongings and we really appreciated that on the poor weather days, the heating was turned on without having to ask. The only challenge we confronted was with the shower – because we were on the top floor (which we requested) we had the sloping roof of the chalet cut into the shower which made standing upright difficult – tall people may prefer a room on the lower floors. It was very quiet at night and we were pleasantly awoken each morning by the sound of cow bells as the cows moved through the town.

We took the half board hikers package which meant we had breakfast and dinner included in our package each day. The food was sensational – especially the dinners - and for what we received, was very reasonably priced. Make sure you leave room for dessert as these were truly delicious and eagerly looked forward to by my husband. We noticed that the restaurant was full every night, particularly with locals who appeared to choose it over other options in the village. Despite eating 7 nights in the same restaurant, there was plenty of variety and the staff was only too happy to prepare something different if we didn’t like the options on offer.

The hotel has good facilities which included a first class restaurant, breakfast room, pizza café, beautiful outdoor terrace with equipment for children, well equipped games room and a very impressive wellness centre. There is also a computer with Internet access available for a small charge. Like all hotels we visited in Switzerland, the TV in our room only had a couple of English channels, but given that we were there to explore the outdoors and given that we wanted a “Swiss” experience, this did not bother us.

By far the best thing about this hotel however, is the staff. The hotel is owned/managed by Christian who has a wealth of knowledge about the area and spent time with us each day planning out hikes he thought would be suitable for our level of fitness and the forecast weather conditions. Unfortunately, we had a couple of poor weather days and Christian did not hesitate to make the wellness area available outside the standard operating hours, complete with robes and towels, and even went to the trouble of reimbursing us for English newspapers we purchased in town. His team in the restaurant was also very friendly and able to provide advice about the local area. Best of all was Christian’s father who founded the hotel and made of a point of visiting each table in the restaurant each night to have a chat and provide local insight. This created an excellent ambience and also encouraged guests to talk with each other and share experiences.

The town of Bettmeralp is a car free town in the canton of Valais/Wallis and sits at an altitude of almost 2,000 meters. We took the train and connecting cable car to get there which was very easy. The town itself is small, quaint and very Swiss, filled with pretty chalets, free roaming cows and glorious views of the mountains. Best of all, there were very few tourists which made a pleasant change from other Swiss mountain towns we had visited such as Wengen and Murren where we often felt like we could have been in England. We spent one week in the village for the sole purpose of hiking and apart from a couple of poor weather days were very impressed by the hiking available.

The hiking in the Bettmeralp area is absolutely awesome and was the highlight of our month long stay in Switzerland. There are walks for all fitness levels with stunning scenery and many of the chair lifts, cable cars etc are operational over summer which provided the opportunity to really move around the area. Although the mountains are spectacular throughout Switzerland, this area is very special as there is the beautiful Aletsch forest to explore and the mind blowing Aletsch glacier which has to be seen to be believed. We have spent may weeks hiking in Switzerland, but for me the Aletsch glacier is about as good as it gets and its beauty is enhanced by the fact that you need to walk around 2 hours to get to it, which means 99% of tourists will not make the effort, leaving you to enjoy the view in relative peace and quiet.

Overall, we have nothing but praise for the town of Bettmeralp and the Chalet-Hotel Bettmerhof and are already planning our return. We only hope it continues to remain undiscovered by everyone other than the Swiss.
