I was invited to lunch with my cousin and some friends at this outwardly unassuming restaurant/auberge. Once inside the charm and character was very apparent and the inviting atmosphere engulfed you. We were showed to an upstairs dining room which was tastefully furnished in a rural French style. Once seated, a very pleasant waitress took our orders for an apperative. There was no hurry to order or rush us along in any way which is typically French and when we were ready to order it was taken by an extremely efficient maitre de. The three course formula menu was competitively priced and the selection for each course varied. All in all, this is an excellent restaurant providing good food at a reasonable price. Highly recommended.

Five of us decided to go for lunch on a Friday - we arrived and left our coats downstairs before being accompanied to a table upstairs - where we were the only diners. We were not offered menus, but the owner offered a choice of three starters - paté de poisson, paté de campagne, or something that was described as a saumon clafoutis, and turned out to be poached salmon in a pastry-less quiche. Sadly without any sort of herbs to give it a bit of flavour. We were then offered a choice of two main courses - pork pieces or turkey kebab, and certainly the turkey was not very nice at all. It arrived fairly dry in a sort of gravy that seemed to consist of bisto with a touch of red wine, some extremely over salty (and therefore inedible) mushroom slices, a piece of grilled tomato topped with a little pesto, and some burned dauphinoise potatoes that tasted oily. Dessert offered was either coconut tart or chocolate cake - the latter again being deemed inedible by at least two of the diners. At no stage were we offered an alternative menu, and we were not given any idea as to cost of the menu de jour. Luckily it was saved by the fact that we bonded as a family because we thought it was so funny - and because my daughter nearly got caught red handed putting her chocolate cake into my handbag! I wish I had donated the 67€ it cost (plus the 7€ tip left for excellent service) to a local animal charity. Definitely would not go back.

Every time we return to the Poitou Charentes we will visit this charming old school restaurant in the village of Nanteuil en Valee. If I remember correctly they offer a menu at £12 including a carafe of wine. Fantastic value and back to traditions. They're also very accommodating to allergies like gluten and do not turn there nose up at a vegetarian. This place is a must for lunch but done expect fine dinning this is a restaurant traditionelle! Merci encore et à bientôt !
