“Excellent hotel but do read the reviews”
Reviewed April 9, 2014

We stayed at this hotel for 8 nights at the end of a five week holiday to Australia and New Zealand. We are seasoned travellers to Asia and selected this hotel based on reviews, its location and the information contained in its website.

Many long reviews have been written and the hotel management do encourage use of review sites such as trip advisor as a means of promoting its benefits and helping to combat the other quality hotels in the area. This can be a two edged sword as over inflated reviews will lead to future customer disappointment through failure to meet expectations based on historical 'rave' reviews.

These comments are based on our experience of this and other hotels in Asia, ranging from 5 star top end establishments, smaller boutique style hotels in both town and beach locations and I hope these are helpful and objective.

Location - 10 minutes from the airport, adjacent to a long beach 'strip' which has plenty of water based activities. It is at one end of the main street which has plenty of restaurants and shopping. The street will generate some noise and is not the most attractive feature with much building work which when completed will increase the tourist numbers. This is not a quiet 'idyllic' retreat area. The hotel is located at one end of the main street which is a bonus.

Hotel - a smaller hotel with around 35 rooms on various 'wings' and levels. A well air-conditioned lobby with helpful reception staff is your first introduction. A library area with books, DVDs to rent and Wi Fi throughout most of the hotel and pool/beach area are good features. The bar area is shaded and welcoming with a good number of staff, most of whom are attentive, helpful and cheery. The pool area is good with plenty of sunbeds although the hotel management do encourage early morning towel reservation which can be frustrating when beds are reserved and then not sued for long periods of the day. The common areas are clean and well presented with plenty of natural shade from trees and plenty of parasols.

Rooms - we had one of the deluxe suites which was superb offering a spacious living room, bedroom with four poster bed and a bathroom. Our only surprising downside of this wonderful offering was the instruction on day one by the hotel management not to put used toilet paper in the WC and to place it in the bin provided. In this day and age and in a hotel built within the past 15 years, the inability to build sufficient sewerage facility to cope with modern, albeit 'western' expectations was a disappointment and not something that the current management can do much about. This only seems to be a problem with upstairs accommodation and may only be restricted to the deluxe suites - if so this is a great shame as these are the most expensive rooms.

Food - despite us choosing this hotel for its proximity to local restaurants, we ate within the hotel every night and enjoyed superb food from a wide enough menu, which was prepared to a very high standard and well presented. The beach location was excellent and a good 'Plan B' for adverse weather was in place. We also paid for the La Luna exclusive 7 course meal with wine to celebrate a milestone birthday and were not at all disappointed.

Hotel Staff - led by the current manager, who is leaving shortly, the staff are very keen to help and there is a good team spirit in place and a genuine desire to help. Time will tell whether the new man at the top can continue to maintain the high standards. Many of the staff are long service and this shows through in the team work and service ethic.

Breakfast - wide and varied selection and freshly cooked to order hot food is very good. Freshly made fruit juices are available as is fresh fruit. The breakfast offering is one of the many highlights of this hotel.

Spa - this is a small facility with attentive staff and very reasonably priced. The range of treatments is impressive.

Overall - a very well run hotel which we believe delivers very well against its 4 star rating. We cannot comment on the value for money as this was part of an overall personal itinerary spread over 5 weeks. Our feeling is, from looking at the website that the pricing may be a little high but the good ratio of staff to guests needs to be paid for. This hotel does offer quality however its location needs to be looked into carefully, as it is not a 'get away from it all' site when compared to others. That said, it does offer plenty of activities to suit many tastes and the additional trips available (paid for separately) are plentiful and varied. Overall a very good hotel, well run, but please do not be totally 'bowled over' by the 'perfect' reviews which, I believe' could be counter-productive in the longer term.

This hotel was everything, and more. Nothing was too much bother for the staff. All the little things they did during the day & into the evening, mango ice lollies, cold scented towels on the beach, turn down at night with candles burning & soft music playing. What more can you ask for. Room the was the best ever, huge and with garden by the pool. Clean, clean, clean. Food great. Everything was spot on. Thank you Casa del Mar we would recommend you to anyone.
The only downside is the amount of construction going on in the local area. The location was busy with jet ski's & boats but it reminds you that there is still life out there.
If you want solitude I suggest you go to one of the huge hotels where nobody knows who you are.

Our four-night stay at the Casa del Mar was perfect.
A very welcoming reception including a tasty welcome drink, very personal, very warm. We got a tour around the hotel premises. We had to carry our luggage to the room ourselves but since we're young that's ok ;-)
The room was big and charming. Fruit, cookies, tea and coffee were refilled every day. An insect repellent spray (which smelled sooo good) was there too and it helped a lot. Slippers and beach towels were available in the room too.
Our room (upstairs) was clean and the spacious bathroom had shower and bathtub.
The turndown service was awesome - when we came back to the room after dinner, the candles were lit, music was playing and we found nice smelling greetings fom the spa.
The hotel premises were wonderful - not too big, familial, clean, charming.
Very comfortable sunbeds on the beach, unfortunately often reserved with towels. We were served free ice water and sometimes fruits at the beach.
The staff helped with booking trips and taxis.
Canoes and bikes can be rented for free.
The dinner at the beach was very nice. Excellent food and good cocktails were served. Sometimes we had to wait quite long for the food but we were on holidays so no hurry :-)
We are definitely coming back!

Just back from spending fortnight here well set up as to be expected from a boutique hotel with good facilities and very helpful staff. We had poolside room which had a small lounge a large comfortable bed complete with flat screen tv and full coffee and tea making facilities the bathroom had an excellent shower and plenty of storage. There is also the fresh fruit supply nuts and biscuits which are plentiful in the room daily and a good choice for breakfast you are also supplied with iced water ,fruit iced on stick and fresh fruit whilst sunbathing all good additional touches. The sun beds are plentiful with fresh towels every night delivered to room a turn down service were a candle is lit and nice soft jazz left playing creating a nice ambience on returning to room. The negatives as far as I'm concerned was the traffic and street noise that could be heard clearly from room and we also booked the castaway picnic following a recommendation from another guest our experience was we were taken to a beach where there was also a booze cruise complete with live band DJ and 30-40 guests.Hardly castaway there was less noise on Cenang beach although we did get a price reduction when I told manager, but surely they have a couple of locations? The beach front of hotel is well maintained although the constant buzz of jet skis and backward and forwards of 4x4s is far from ideal and I feel this is going to get worse as there are a couple of new high rise hotels being constructed at present.I fear that the resort will lose its original appeal however much it tries due to the growth of Cenang and more tourists so if your looking for an away from it all adult only total relaxation resort this in my opinion is not it sorry.

We stayed 4 nights 16-20 March in a beachfront studio room which was very spacious and had a well designed layout apart from too many doors in the bathroom / wardrobe area. Loads of storage space and a lovely bathroomwith twin basins, but a bigger shower and no bath would have been our preference. The beachfront rooms had easy access to the beach which was just outside your private 'court yard', access to / from seaview rooms didn't seem obvious so we're glad of the beachfront. The hotel is lovely and definately boutique with excellent friendly service.

The hotel is situated on the quiet end of Pantai Chenang beach with loads of sun loungers both around the lovely pool and on the beach. Towards the busier end of the very long beach starting +200 yards from the hotel are jet skis and banana boats etc which are fine but you wouldn't want them closer to the hotel.

Breakfast was very good and consisted of A'lacart, but there was fresh fruit which you ordered from the 'chef' and he then brought this to your table once he had peeled, sliced etc. These was also a good selection of other items such as cold meats, pastries etc.
Whilst boutique hotels are usually isolated the Case del Mar has the advantage that you can walk to many restaurants - these are quite busy and varied in food offerings.

Room Tip: Beachfront definately had easier acsess to the beach and had a nice court yard to sit in.

Although we regrettably did not stay in this hotel we did spend an evening in their restaurant having food and drinks. The hotel is relatively small with a beautiful lobby and well maintained grounds. The pool area was spacious with very nice sunbeds (this is a relatively good measure of a hotel!). The staff were very attentive and extremely hospitable. There was an amazing cocktail list, containing not only the usual options but some interesting combinations too. Food was well presented and very tasty and the service was of a high standard. This is by far the nicest hotel on Pentai Cenang.

I've just spent three fantastic days at Casa del Mar. I based my choice on tripadvisor reviews and I was not disappointed! The staff are very friendly and eager to make sure you are 100% happy. Because it is a boutique hotel, there are few people and the staff to customer ratio is very high. it felt as though I was in a staffed villa rather than a hotel. My room was almost on the beach with only the gorgeous, infinity pool (with wonderful dark turquoise tiling) and a couple of rows of palm trees standing in between. The room itself was lovely and clean with all the perks of a high end hotel. Meals were generous and of high quality - fusion cuisine, Malaysian and European, and dinner was served on the beach so you can enjoy a beautiful sunset as you nibble at a chili seabass. For romantic couples or those thinking of proposing, this is an ideal setting and you can book a special table for two with marquis on the beach for the occasion...! My favourite feature of the hotel was the complimentary kayak that you can take out and paddle with to the mini-desert island about a mile offshore. I spent many hours lazing on the beach with the place all to myself. The hotel itself is just at the edge of the pantai cenang area with shops.bars and restaurants if you want to venture out for a walk (but why would you?!) In summary, I loved this place! Thank you to all the staff who made my stay so wonderful and personal.

Room Tip: Choose the seaview!
