We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Langkawi. Having not visited since 2002 and having read some adverse comments on TripAdvisor prior to our holiday, we were a little apprehensive about returning to the Pelangi Beach Resort Hotel as we have always found it to be a very comfortable and enjoyable hotel.
We need not have worried. The standard of service is as excellent as ever, and it was so nice to see lots of familiar faces. The staff we have met in previous years all seemed genuinely pleased to see us, and made us feel extremely welcome.
There have been quite a few changes at the hotel since our last visit - the addition of the Teratai Spa; construction of sand dunes in front of the water breakers; expansion and improvements to the massage kiosk; and you can now dine on wooden decking right on the beach at the Tepian Cenang Restaurant - these are all very welcome improvements and make the hotel even more attractive. The gardens were always a delight, and apparently suffered a lot of damage following the tsunami. They are absolutely stunning now.
The hotels on the north coast do seem classier as they are newer and more expensive. However, they are remote. The Pelangi is a much more attractive option to us because of the proximity of a wide range of excellent restaurants which are a walk or short taxi ride away – the Bon Ton, Sun Village, Sun Sutra, Fat Mum’s, Sheela’s, Champor Champor, Orkid Ria, to name but a few. We were not disappointed with the food in the hotel either!
Refurbishment of the rooms will start in a few weeks time and this will only further enhance what we feel is a very special hotel - the fact that a large number of guests return year after year says it all.
We can’t wait to return to the Pelangi.

We throughly enjoyed Perlangi.
The staff were charming and constantly smiling,The service in all the outlets was excellent. The rooms of a very good standard. The south facing beach was the better.
There is no need to take meal package as eating off the menu is quite reasonable and there many very nice places to eat and get variety within short distance. Red tomato on beach for breakfast The Raasa forlocal colour, The lighthouse, Little Indai, Garden Beach resort etcetc, the whole holiday was wonderful and yes we would go back again, tomorrow!!

My wife and I stayed at the Pelangi in January 2006 for 3 days.

We really were disappointed in most areas. The hotel was SO crowded that the service was strained to the max, the buffet in the morning was totally empty and it was impossible to even get a cup of coffee.... and the food was really not great anyway.

the pool areas were nice but again totally crowded, and pretty loud... all in all not that relaxing. The beach at this end of Pantai Cengah is almost not at all usable (and there arent any beach chairs out anyway)

The rooms were average at best though look nice and traditional malay from the outside... inside they were dated and not all that clean.

The one upside was that it was entirely child/family friendly, and had plenty of activities.

We probably would not stay at the Pelangi again if we are on Langkawi again,.

I spent a week here during the bi-annual LIMA airshow. It was a relaxing and pleasant stay and as good a "business stay" as I have had anywhere.

The staff at PBR were the friendliest, most attentive I have encountered anywhere. Every employee seemed genuinely interested in guest comfort. Food at the resort ranged from very good (the beach bar-b-que and pool-side satays) to superb (the Thai restaurant and the fresh pineapple at the breakfast buffet).

I stayed on a ground-floor unit in Building 4, which suffered from road-noise during prime-time (particularly as numerous motorcades passed due to the Airshow and the Deputy Prime Minister staying at the resort for several days while he attended), but I never heard any noise from other guests beside or above me. It was also a nice thing that the maid left a different small gift each day when the room was made up.

I greatly enjoyed my stay at the PBR and left refreshed and relaxed -- although I would highly recommend making sure that you are not in the potential trajectory of falling coconuts when lounging by the pool -- I had a *very* narrow escape and can still hear the whizzing sound !!

Even so, I would return to the PBR in a heartbeat!

My husband and I stayed at the Pelangi for two weeks in January and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a de-lux room overlooking the lake, must say would not have wanted one of the rooms backing onto the road. The rooms are in need of refurbishment but very comfortable and clean. The reception, dining rooms, pools and gardens are excellent. The staff are very friendly, helpful and polite. We ate in the hotel a couple of times but found the restaurants outside cheaper and a lot more choice, although it seems as if there isn't much there you need to ferret out the goods ones. Sun Sutra and Sun Cafe are worth a visit by cab, steer clear of the Lighthouse and Thai Barn - very disappointed with both. Try Go Slow Cafe on the beach for lunch and dinner or the Beach Cafe for dinner. Hotel breakfast is very good with a lot of choice although can be a bit hectic because everyone wants to sit outside but the staff do their best. Would definitely go back.

My wife and i spent 12 nights at the Pelangi from the 12th to the 24th of January, we had spent the previous 5 nights at the Oriental in Singapore and our final 2 nights in the Shangri-la in KL and whilst the Pelangi is not in the same leauge as these 2 hotels you cannot compare 5* city hotels with a beach resort.

As beach resorts go the Pelangi is perfectly adequate with plenty of good points and some bad ones but after reading the 2 reviews dated the 10th and 17th of January we thought we would like to share our experience of our stay.

1. The gardens at the Pelangi are nothing short of superb and full marks to the team of people looking after them.

2. The beach is not the best on the island and your do need to keep something on your feet as the shells can be sharp, however the sand nearer the coconut trees is perfectly OK and if sea shells and tide breakers upset you, you could always lounge around one of the 2 beautiful pools on nice wooden furniture as the old metal ones are still used for the beach.

3.Lankawi airport takes 4 jumbos per week and around 6 smaller planes per day with the last flight being 9.30 PM, as the airport closes at 10.30 PM noise was not a problem.

4.Despite being on a room only basis We ate most nights a-la-carte at the resort and found the food to be really good quality and resonably priced compared to the U.K, we did try other places outside the resort and whilst they were cheaper we did not think the food was as good as the Pelangi or the standard of cleanliness was poor ( we went to the highly recommended lighthouse one evening only to be confronted with a fair number of cockroaches before we had even finished the menu selection and so headed back to the Pelangi were i can honestly say that in 12 nights we did not see any)

5.the rooms are a little gloomy and despite the fact that they are adequately tended to each day it was obvious from the dusty curtains and cobwebs behind the tv etc that they do not give a monthly spring clean and i think this lets them down a little.

6. noise can be a problem as the wooden walls / floors are very thin and on one occasion i had to ask the people down below us to keep the noise down, but this is the fault of thoughtless individuals and not the hotel and if the noise had persisted then i feel sure that reception would of sorted it out if required.

My wife and i have stayed at the Datai and the Andaman and found the staff at both to be snooty and most of the guests seem only concerned with whom is the richest and reminded me of strutting peacocks, all in all i prefer the relaxed atmosphere of the Pelangi, its staff and its location and whilst you only get what you pay for in this world i think you still get a little bit more for your money at the Pelangi.

The staff at this hotel are just fantasic. We stayed in a Meritus Club room, well worth the extra cost.
You get access to the Meritus Club and have Breakfast and evening cocktails included. The staff just went that extra mile to deliver great service. We met the general manager Francois in the clubhouse.
The hotel grounds are well kept and I have been to many 5 star hotels in Asia. This hotel has the same standards but in a very relaxed manner.
The beach is not the best on the Island, however the hotel does have a fantastic location for eating out and experiencing local culture. Many place to eat, Bon Tons 10/10 however expect to pay £50 for 2 for a 3 course meal. Red tomatoe very good and cheap so was the beach front.
Great trip to go on is the cable car, get taxi from hotel. You can also walk up to the seven wells waterfalls from there.
Car hire also very easy and roads very quiet.
10/10 loved the island.
