My boyfriend and I stayed at Pelangi Beach Resort from June 21-24 and absolutely loved it! We got the Romantic Interlude package, which was worth every penny, although we did not have time to do everything included (like the free game of mini-golf). We especially enjoyed our couples massage at Teratai Spa, very relaxing! There is a good variety of food choices at the hotel, reasonable prices. Try the buffet breakfast at Spice Market and the BBQ on the beach is a must! Recreation services offers a wide variety of activities if you do not want to lay by the pool - we went snorkelling & diving at Pulau Payar and on an Island Hopping Tour for a reasonable price. Also make sure to visit the Langkawi Cable Car. Our room was very clean and in good condition, and the staff always smiled and said hello, making us feel welcome. Nothing was too much trouble and we never had to lift a finger. The grounds were kept up nicely, pool was clean, beautiful flowers and they sprayed chemicals outside for mosquitos so there were relatively no bugs. The sunset is amazing here, and the beach never had more than a couple of people on it. We passed by many of the other hotels on the island and it was easy to see that they do not compare to Pelangi. We wish we could have stayed longer and most definitely will return!

We have just returned from the Pelangi Beach Resort having booked it primarily because of the glowing reviews of the hotel on this site. Whilst it was far from a holiday in hell it fell short of our expectations.

ACCOMODATION:
We had booked a "Deluxe sea view room". This consisted of a smallish bedroom, bathroom and balcony. There was absolutely nothing "deluxe" about it. The balcony was not (as you would expect) at the end of the bedroom and therefore the same width but rather on the end of the bathroom, to the side. It was tiny and consisted of a plastic table and two old plastic chairs. Security was also a let down. As our room overlooked a deserted stretch of beach it was important that things be kept secure (although full points for having a mini safe at no extra cost). The windows were secured by simple metal latches that in the bathroom was so loose if the window (which overlooked the balcony) had been pushed a few times the latch would probably have slipped down. I had to push some paper against the latch to make it sit more securely. Even worse was the metal bars (what are they called?) which allow windows to be kept opened, or securely shut by placing one of the holes in the bar in a spike along the bottom of the window. These also allow the window to be kept firmly shut. On each of our windows the spike bit did not allign with the bar making the whole thing useless. This was unforgivably shoddy in a supposed 4/5 star resort.

The rooms are I think supposed to be replicas of Malaysian traditional "Lanai's" and are therefore all dark brown teak style both outside and inside. There were no bright pictures on the walls (or any pictures) to break up the "brown" which meant that (given very small windows the room was just incredibly dark even in the brightest sunshine (and as a result quite depressing) (think your bedroom painted dark brown on walls and ceiling ) The "Brown theme" was maintained on the balcony where each wall was also dark brown giving the impression, (given the smallness of the balacony) of sitting in a 3-sided wooden box (Consequently we didn't use the balcony all that much!). I appreciate that this can't really be taken as a criticism as I'm sure many people find these Lanai's very picturesqe but I mention it as we found the room gloomy and depressing which others (similaly disinclined to the colour brown) may also feel.

One final word on the rooms. They have very steep internal roofs with exposed beams at the top. The beams are probably over 10 feet from the floor and when we had the odd insect it was difficult to spray the room properly because of the very high beams.

RESORT:

The grounds are beautiful without any doubt. They are kept spotless and there was an incredible profusion of tropical colour. The lobby was a dissapointment. Again, it was structrally impressive though soooo gloomy, again all very dark brown. It was so dark I could barely read my book. There was always a lot going on especially for children and adults and the free form swimming pools are amongst the best I've come across. If you go hire some bikes to ride around the resort as this is the best way to see it.

STAFF:

They were all very friendly and helpful and all said good morning etc when walking past. On our arrival we eat in the Spice Market which was doing a buffet. We ordered all a carte. Two of the meals were innedible due to dangerously undercooked chicked and fish and chips which which were cold. I told the waitress that were weren't going to pay for them. A few moments later the manager came and offered prefuse apologies. Again, full marks for service. We did eat at the fun pub the next night and had the BBQ which was excelllent.

OVERALL:

We didn't much enjoy our time at the Pelangi though the main resons for that aren't really criticisms of the hotel but rather our own personal preferences. However, I do think it is looking a bit dated and the rooms need an overhaul. The shoddiness of the locks on the doors was a concern but overall we were dissaponted by the quality of the accomodation which wasn't in any way what we had expected from a 5/4 star(dependent on which web site you look at) resort. I should add in fairness to the Pelangi I am not cautioning against going there but I do hope the above comments are of assistance to other readers.

Just stayed at the Pelangi Beach Resort for 5 nights and had a nice stay. Though it's rated 5 stars I think it doesn't meet them, it's a 4 star resort. I also found it lacked some character.
The resort has many facilities to keep people busy during their stay as Langkawi is a very laidback and beautiful island, but it has not much to do or see outside the resort.
We had a seaview room , right in front of the beach, which was large and confortable but a bit dark. The grounds are nice and well kept with two nice swimming pools. The beach wasn't stunning but it was ok and as most people preferred to lay in the pools, it was a good place to relax and bath as it was quiet desert , specially in the mornings.
The service was good ,people were always willing to help, though at the restaurants it was pretty bad at times as they lacked people working there.
Food was only so so. The best restaurant was the Thai one and we had a very disappointing and expensive BB buffet dinner on the beach. Though the breakfast was extensive it lacked a bit quality. Like other people here, I also highly recommend a dinner at the Bon Ton nearby. Beautiful setting and excellent food, the best meal we had during all our stay in Malaysia. They have a sort of apple pudding with ice cream for dessert that is to die for!!!
The night entertainment at the lounge bar had a band playing western hits. Typical dances and music would be much nicer to see and give a Malay feeling, like they do in Thailand.
Also had a massage at the beach massage hut which left my whole body aching for two days and I still don't know if it was supposed to, lol.
All in all it's a nice and quiet resort, though big, it is relaxing. got a great discounted rate by being a Meritus Cub member so it was a good value for money.
During my stay I visited the Datai and the Tanjung Rhu and though the first one left me a bit disappointed , expected it to be nicer, I regreted not having stayed at the Tanjung Rhu. It's beautiful and the beach is the best in Langkawi.

After reading all the great reviews, we were expecting a top hotel and were very disappointed.
From arriving and having to wait at check-in for half an hour to be served,(even with more staff then guests) followed by a confusion with our booking, we were given a room which wasn't what we had booked.
Although the grounds and pool area are very nice and well maintained, it would be good if they spent half the amount of time maintaining and cleaning the rooms. Our room was well below standard for this type of hotel; it was not very clean with hairs in the bathroom and stained dried blood on the sheets and clean towels, but also with many stains. The floors and furniture in the rooms were damaged and covered in marks and the bathroom looks like it dates from the late 80s and came complete with cracked tiles. Given the cost of this hotel it is well below the expected standard.
On a positive note however, the staff were extremely friendly and there is great restaurant next door at the Casa Del Mar. We will be returning to Langkawi, but not to the Pelangi Beach Resort.

Stayed at the Pelangi Beach as the third part of our journey through Malaysia and found it to be in an ideal location, as there were many little shops and restaurants within walking distance. The ones we most liked were:

Red Tomato for breakfast - superb freshly baked bread and coffee.

Beach Cottage for dinner
Marie Blu in marina for Italian for a change
Orchid Ria for fantastic sea food that you can choose yourself and they will cook it for you.
and for a special occasion Bon Ton.
and Casa Del Mar

We enjoyed out stay at Pelangi Beach and would rate it a very good family four star hotel. The rooms were all wooden on stilts around the grounds and considering it was so big, it never seemed too busy. We had a lovely sea view room. However we did not have a family, so we split our stay with the Datai, which was on the otherside of the island, which was away from everything, but a difference experience.

What a great resort. Excellent location at the end of a white sandy beach. They clean it daily as their is still lots of debris from the Tsunami being washed up. The far end of the beach does have a bit of litter on it. Easy walking to restaurants and bars. The food in the resort was good but expensive compared with the street restaurants. We enjoyed the Bon Ton the best, followed by the Uzkaizan Japanese. Room are big with the most enormous bed. Heat pump for air conditioning which was slightly noisy but worth it to keep cool thru the night. My pick of rooms would be seaview first and then poolview (Cascade pool end). The nightly bar bands could be a bit noisy in the rooms near the lobby pool as they play until 1am. They are very clean and the hotel does of lot natural spraying around the grounds and rooms for mosquitos, we didnt get bitten once. Cars can be rented from the lobby which is worth doing for a day. Mangrove trip is also worth it. Overall it is a fantastic resort is the best location on the whole island and we had a ball.
