Our disappointing experience started at the very beginning of our stay. We arrived only a few minutes before our scheduled check in time but had to wait an hour for our room. While waiting, we were offered the lounge, however the food had been sitting a long time and was not fresh. We did receive an updated room and the staff was very pleasant.
We were very distressed by the overall property. The palm trees were spray painted, the ponds were like swamps and there were no umbrellas for shade on the entire property.
When we went to our room for the first night, we were greeted with mouse droppings on our pillow and in the bed itself! We cleaned it up and decided to try and sleep, however, we lay awake all night listening to the rodent scratch at the wall. The room was thoroughly cleaned and searched the next day but nothing was found. A few hours later, there were more mouse droppings on the pillow.
That day, we were changed to a sea view chalet. Although the interior had been recently upgraded, the door to the outside was not. It appeared as though people had tried to pry the door open many times and since it was right on the public beach, we didn't feel safe.
Breakfast was chaos and there was no one checking people into a table. When we got up to get our food, even though fresh drinks were on the table, we returned to find our table occupied.
The staff was again, very friendly but we decided we couldn't spend our whole vacation stressed so we checked out early.
On a positive note, we enjoyed a great meal the second night we were there and the band in the lobby was terrific.

Thank you for providing us with your valued feedback and thoughtfully highlighting your points, which are certainly appreciated. I do sincerely apologize for any unpleasant experience and dissatisfaction during your stay.

We do provide umbrellas along the whole stretch of our beachfront and also for both our swimming pools (new shades for the main pool are expected to arrive any time soon).

The droppings and scratching noise behind the wall actually came from harmless fruit bats that gained access to the room. This had since been sealed off.

Your other points on the breakfast service had been noted and we had since taken proactive measures on this matter.

Once again, we apologize for any dissatisfaction and welcome another opportunity to serve you again with a more positive stay experience.

We stayed here in September/October 2012 and had a lovely experience thanks to the staff who, once made aware of any issues, were very accomodating. We didn't know upon arrival that the hotel was being renovated, so the lakeview room we thought we had booked turned out to be overlooking the pool, which was crowded and noisy due to the main pool being closed for the renovations. Once we chatted to the staff they happily moved us to a non-renovated chalet on the quiet side of the beach (which suited us) and we were quite happy to remain there. However it appeared our shower was leaking into the room below and we needed to be moved again! We were concerened we might end up near the construction, and when we mentioned this the staff assured us we would be moved to a beachfront chalet on the other side of the beach (I think it was no.48). These chalets have been renovated and are just beautiful. The bed was amazing and from the bathtub you look directly through a huge window at the ocean. You're far better off eating locally than at the hotel restaurant as far as price goes - except for breakfast! We had breakfast included and it was consistently amazing; well worth the price for the quality and variety of the food and the service.

Overall, we had a lovely stay and I think once this hotel is fully renovated it will be well worth it's 5-star rating. After experiencing 3 different rooms in our short stay the renovated beachfront chalets are certainly the most impressive, but I think the location of the room would have the biggest impact on your stay - even the unrenovated chalet on the other side of the hotel was lovely and peaceful. We would like to say a big thank you to all the staff, who were so helpful and never made us feel like we were being difficult!

Room Tip: If within your price range, go for a beachfront chalet (second floor) on the side next to the Casa del Mar hotel. Amazing views and still fairly quiet as you're still some distance from the main beach action.

Stayed there from 10 to 15 Feb. The porter Mr Ismail was great. He was always greeting guests with a smile. On the day of departure, it suddenly rained heavily while we were waiting for a cab at the hotel lobby. When he realized that we have been standing here for over 10 mins, he quickly ran out of the hotel to hail a taxi in the rain. Another male staff at the check in counter, I think his name is Rosadi (something like that), also had a great service attitude. The think I appreciated most was they upgraded us to have access to the Meritus Club Lounge. It was a big help as there was finger food and drinks throughout the day. Helps saves $! The things that I don't like were 1) water clarity at the main pool. Luckily there is another pool with much better water clarity, but it is quite far from the main lobby. 2) the cushion on the semi-circle seat in the Meritus Club Lounge was infested by some bugs, because my 3 year old son lied down on it and sustained 6 insect bites on his arms and hands. The bugs seemed not able to penetrate clothing tho' as I did not suffer any bite even tho' I also sat on the same seat. 3) the housekeeping is not so good, as they only swept the floors, and not mop with water. So you can imagine how dirty the floor was when you have stayed for a few days.

I am impressed with the lack of obvious insects, and despite of the occasional mosquitoes, I only got bitten once and I did not apply any insect repellant. The mosquitoes were quite dumb, because I could kill them easily, unlike the ones in Singapore.......

The hotel is at the end of the busy street at Cenang and it is very convenient.
Overall, I would definitely stay at Pelangi again!

Room Tip: I would recommend the restaurant nearby (turn right from hotel main entrance) called RASA seafood. Food is delicious and price cheaper than the rest. More value for money! I had a giant lobster at Ochid Ria and it costs RM560!

We stayed at Meritus Pelangi over the CNY holidays (9Feb to 12Feb2013). We wanted a short getaway with the family to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. Our kids are 14 and 11yrs old and therefore we had booked a triple sharing standard room, hoping that it would be large enough to accomodate all of us. When we checked in, we were told that the hotel had upgraded us to a sea-view chalet.

The chalet was beautiful. The room itself was large - big enough for a king size bed and a single bed plus a settee. The bathroom also was huge with a bathtub, nice shower area and a walk in cupboard. Back door from the room led us to an amazing view of the beach just about 20m away. It was serene and quiet, and at times during our stay, we had the beach all to ourselves. We really appreciated the room upgrade. In the evening, we were very pleasantly surprised to find a cake waiting for us in the room. A nice touch from the hotel.

Other points to highlight: Drinks from the mini bar was free. Half a dozen cans of soft drinks may not seem much but when we reached out hotel room, after a swim or out shopping/sightseeing in hot humid Langkawi, it seemed heavenly. The hotel had two large pools - both with slides. My kids spent hours each day in the pool. Bicycles were available for rental (free for the first 2 hours) - as the hotel premises is rather large, the we rode around quite a bit on the bicycles.

Not so great: Breakfast was rather disappointing. The spread was limited and food was not that great. It lacked simple must-haves such as low fat milk for cereal and a yoghurt corner. Most of the hotels that we've stayed in Msia provide extras such as a fresh juice bar, cappucino or latte on request, and a much wider spread. Moreover food when depleted took a long time to refill. The breakfast left such an impression that we chose to have all our meals out. Additionally the animal farm consisted of only some geese/ducks and the mini golf had a red ant infestation in hole 3. We covered both in less than ten minutes on our bicycle ride.

Overall nice place for a family. And its on a great location too. 15min walk and there are plenty of restaurants and massage places. Underwater world and DFS shopping are 25mins away. By taxi - MYR8. Great thing about Langkawi taxis is that rates are fixed according to the distance and the drivers quote the rates upfront. One does not get cheated.

The new rooms have transformed this hotel. Would highly recommend. Staff very friendly. New pool very good for children. Ideal position for a 5 minute walk down town where you can eat cheap and delicious evening meals. This hotel with the new rooms definitely merits a 5 star rating.
