Parkdean - Tummel Valley Holiday Park
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 18, 2009

Travelled to Tummel Valley with friends at the start of June on a £9.50 Sun holiday & have to say I was pleasantly surprised! The road taking you there isnt the best but once we negotiated it we were met by a very nice girl at reception who ran through our welcome pack with us, told us about pool opening times, entertainment & what other activities there were in the area then directed us to our caravan.
The caravan was lovely with central heating & double glazing throughout, huge living/dining area, fully equiped kitchen (although the grill took FOREVER to cook stuff under) & a great power shower that about blew you out the cubicle!
The setting is very nice & very quiet. Its very picturesque with the mountains in the background, some forest walks & walks down by the river. There isnt that much to do in & around the park so if you are looking for somewhere lively I dont recommend you come here. There is a small play park for the kids, swimming pool, crazy golf etc & entertainment at night was a bit naff but if you had kids they would enjoy it. The pool isnt very big & gets filled up quite quickly. They also operate it on an hourly timetable so you have to get out after an hour. It is a bit of a nightmare trying to get a cubicle to get changed after your hour is up as there arent enough for everyone getting changed to go in & getting changed to leave. There is also a sauna for the adults.
The staff at the bar/restaurant (if you can call it that) arent particularly pleasant & the food at the 'restaurant' was really quite disgusting. The starter came out cold then my 'rare' steak came out completely cooked through. We'll know next time & DEF will not be eating there. Like another poster commented, its also quite expensive for drinks.
There is also a shop on site that sells a good selection of groceries & unlike a lot of other places in the middle of no-where, doesnt charge the earth for them.
All in all we had a good time & would go back.

Having been regular visitors to Tummel Valley for several years, this will definatley be our last time, Upon arrival our caravan was lovely, couldn't fault it at all! We visited the bar ordered 1 vodka + tin of irn bru + 1 pint of carling £6.80!! the bar prices are ridiculously expensive, we made our way to the seating area only to discover the entertainment was dire... a magician who we hoped would dissapear rather than the piece of string he proceeded to play with, we then noticed that the club emptied in minutes. Entertainment was diabolical in our estimation unlike entertainment previously. i agree with some of the other reviews that Parkdean need to spend money that they are overcharging the holidaymakers and get this park a revamp.

just got back from a long weekend at tummel valley and thought it was very nice.
my 2 kids are 10 and 8 and although the younger one enjoyed the kids club,my older one was a bit bored.i would say that the kids entertainment is for the eights and under.
we stayed in a 3 bedroom lodge and thought it was great. it had everything you need and the views are fantastic.
the shop on site is very expensive but then they always are.
the chip shop is good and eating in the restaurant was very nice and reasonable.
the drive up to tummel valley is a bit tense as the road is very narrow and twisty.
i thought a long weekend was long enough for us as there was not a lot for my eldest to do.

What a fantastic place. Ignore all the bad reviews!!
We booked and stayed for 3 nights from the 27th Dec 08 in a 3 bedroom lodge. The lodge was great it had everything you could possible want and the location next to the river was very nice.

Ok, the restuarant and bar area needs updating as it was quite old, but what is there is clean and tidy.

The food was great and the staff couldnt be faulted at all.
On Sunday the 28th the staff put on a christmas meal which was great and on our day of leaving a full cooked breakfast for FREE!

I have noticed that other reviews complain about the smell, but personally I think there must have been a problem at the time as there was no smell when we was there and we wasnt far away.

If you want to get away from hussel and bussel of everyday life then this is the place to go. Be prepared to do plenty of driving though.

We enjoyed it that much we are going back with family in Oct.

Scotland is a stunning place and this is a great base to explore it.

We have been all over the world and this is probably the most relaxing time we have had. Definately recommended!!

Just returned from a 7 night stay at Tumell Valley. Overall I would say the family enjoyed the holiday however there are several things that could have made our holiday much more enjoyable.

Accommodation
We stayed in a Sycamore Caravan which was clean, spacious and close to the main complex, as of most caravans we have experienced the furnishings were in need of refurbishment. We were pleasantly surprised to discover the caravan had gas central heating but soon realised it was a necessity that had to be kept on constantly in the colder autumn weather also supplied was a hairdryer, microwave and DVD player which were all handy. On our first morning the gas boiler failed to ignite and then the electricity tripped however full credit to maintenance and reception staff who responded immediately and recitified the problems. The caravan did not have a carpet sweeper available so by the end of our holiday it looked pretty grubby unfortunately.

Location
The location of the Tummel Valley has it's plus and minuses, initially seeing the scenery when entering into the site is breathtaking, it is set right in the heart of woodland and it takes anything from 20 -40 mins to drive through the narrow roads depending on how confident you feel driving on this type of terrain, however by the end of the holiday we were all sick of the sight of what felt like the only never ending road, to get out to the nearest town of Pitlochry which is 13 miles away.

Entertainment/Staff & Prices
Travelling for so long in the car, the kids complained of feeling sick, it was frustrating for them having to spend such lengthy periods confined to the car but we felt we had little choice but to travel a lot to provide entertainment for the kids as the complex had no entertainment on during the hours of 12pm - 7.30pm for the kids. There is also no cash machine on site so unles you carry wads of cash around with you (you'll need it for the bar prices right enough £3.75 for a sml glass of wine and £2.65 a pint) then you need to travel at the very least 7 miles alternatively to the small village of Rannoch (only for the bank machine not to dispense cash grrr....) or the 13 miles to Pitlochry.

For takeaway food it is limited only to a fish and chip shop. The food available in the bar area (same menu in restaurant but this area appeared to be unused during our stay with all meals served at bar area) it was reasonably priced but a hit and miss on the quality and similar to food served at a Brewers Fayre Restaurant. On a postive note, we were served big portions and the kids meal at £3.75 for under 5's could easily be split between two kids.

Fully credit to the staff who I experienced as friendly and helpful, especially childrens entertainer Lindsey who was fantastic with the kids and talented at face painting however sadly she isn't given enough time by her manager to accommodate all the children so some were left disappointed. The younger kids especially loved the Milly and Maxi show/disco in the evening and all were given opportunity for photos with the characters without charge, which is great for families. The complex is small and intimate but this has the advantage of creating a lovely homely feel to it, we could easily relax when the older kids where in the amusements knowing they were close by unlike other larger, noisier complexes where you feel you have to constantly follow the older kids around.

All the kids loved the forest/river walks which cost nothing yet provided them with a lovely experience of being outdoors, getting close to nature and an opportunity for fabulous photographs.

Swimming is strictly 45 mins sessions, only available to book 10mins prior to the 'on the hour' session at reception although this is slightly restricting we were never turned away although we did witness some families missing out (if max. numbers of 33 bathers was already reached) which doesnt make for happy kids hyoed to go swimming, so you have to be quick to ensure entry to pool if lots of families go at the same time. We found the pool to be pleasant and good fun. The sauna is an added bonus for the adults however the shower area is far too small with only two hot showers between all bathers in that session which can also over lap with swimmers waiting to enter the pool for the next session.

Problems and suggestions for improvement
The toilet facilities in the main complex are in desparate need of upgrading, from a broken toilet seat which you could oversee as a nothing to get too upset about to stained, unhygienic toilet pans which were unacceptable and offputting.

Most of the entertainment seemed to be provided by just two members of staff who although did a great job and worked extremely hard it posed the problem of the complex being understaffed to deal with demand for entertainment, due to the remote location of complex more daytime entertainment needs to be provided.

A variety of takeaway eateries would be an advantage including healthy eating options, as would having a cash machine on site (and not one that charges you to lift your own money). If we do return we would not stay as long as the 7nghts either, a weekend break or 5 ghts max would be more than enough to experience the beautiful sights and scenery of Tumell Valley and surrounding areas.

Overall we enjoyed the experience, like most caravan holiday sites we have visted the companies need to start spending money on the sites to upgrade them and make what is a popular holiday choice for families, more enjoyable instead of fobbing families off with sub standards. We heard from staff that Parkdean are making major refurbishments at Tummel valley after the close of this season, we hope so as it has the potential to be a five star park and is well worth a visit.

As some of the other reviews of this particular park We have just returned from what COULD be one of the nicest holiday parks in the UK however Parkdean must splash the cash out and refurbish the rundown club and kids entertainment areas(inside and out).
Daniel the entertainments manager was superb, what an enthusiastic fun and talented guy, probabily the best thing about the site but he is leaving in the next two weeks to join a boy band to tour the uk.He will be a huge loss for this park.
We stayed in a Hertage lodge which was gorgeous inside and it was overlooking the river, however the stench coming from the nearbye sewage works would bring tears to your eyes and on some occasions actually made me boak. I work in a prison and have been in some similar situations but this was unaceptable totally spoiled our stay (letter on its way to Parkdean the park owners) i will publicise them when i get a reply.

The park itself is situated in one of the most beatiful areas of Scotland . Some of the scenery is simply breathtaking but you are kind of cut off from civilisation but thats what we wanted to simply chill out. The park shop although supplying most of the essentials could be doing with an update and a wider selection of alcoholic beverages.

please PARKDEAN do not let this park run down anymore, its a great area with great potential, get your club sorted and a quality play area for the kids and for goodness sake get something done about the terrible smell from the sewage.

In conclusion this holiday was a 5 out of 10 for me but with newer facilities and NO SMELL it could quite easily be a 9 or a 10

Just returned from a family weekend here and we loved it. we stayed in the new lodges and they were brilliant, almost new, with everything you would need. The lodges were spotless, well equipped, and spacious. We were there to celebrate my parents 50th wedding anniversary and it was just the kind of thing they enjoy, having all the family together. Thanks to the swimming pool manager, sorry can't remember your name but the gift of a bottle of wine and card to my parents when they learnt what we were there for was much appreciated. Would easily return for another holiday here.
