“BEST PLACE IN EUROPE FOR YANKS TO VACATION”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2009

We drove from Paris CDG via Reims - about 4 hrs total. Take the autoroute all the way, the $20 toll is well worth avoiding 30kph speed limits in French villages. Gas up in Luxembourg - cheapest gas in Europe.

As a vacation home owner who rents his mountain house in Colorado to others, I always compare where I stay with the value I offer my own guests. This hotel was the only place we stayed in Europe which came anywhere close. The resort is large, clean, in the country, yet only 15 minutes drive (or train) to central Luxembourg City. For Europe, it is very inexpensive, the rooms are large, CLEAN, everything was in working order, (unusual for Europe) the large parking lot was free, and the restaurant served some American food at dinner, and had cooked breakfast options in the morning - unusual for continental Europe where they still eat bread and cheese like they did as serfs in the middle ages.

Free wireless internet in the lobby (or if not working, one shared computer terminal there), they speak fluent English, and if you want to play golf, it is only $60 or so. (plus club rental). Eating out on the deck in the evening, I felt like I was in Hawaii. It was lovely, and if (which is highly unlikely) I find myself within 100 miles of Luxembourg City in the future, I will stay here. On a three week road trip around Europe, this was the best place we stayed.

Oh yes, and it had a fantasic indoor swimming pool, hot tub and sauna. I will be happy to tell you more at wtrav@earthlink.net

Stayed over the Easter weekend at the Mercure Canach. It is a very attractive hotel situated in beautiful countryside only about 10 km from Luxembourg City. The Hotel's reception, lobbies and common areas are large and beautifully appointed. Our room was a duplex and the standard of appointment and decor was excellent - it looked almost new. The hotel is surrounded by its golf course, there are nice seating areas outside to enjoy drinks and bar snacks (reasonably priced and good standard). There are wooded areas and walking and cycling tracks (bikes are available for hire). Breakfast was good with great choice. Swimming pool is small but very nice and the lady in charge was charming. Luxembourg City is easy to get to in a car and a very pretty and historic city. The German border is only about 7 km away with Trier and the beautiful Moselle towns such as Bernkastel and Cochem quick to get to by car either on the autobahn or more leisurely scenic route. I would highly recommend this hotel which is also excellent value for money.

In which lottery did Kikuoka win the fourth star?

Firstly: reception managed to give us key to another room so my children walked in (at midnight) waking up a sleeping stranger. Same thing happened last year.
Second: only one English speaking TV channel (news) available, so you better like old series badly dubbed into German or French
Third: Use the pool but don't set you foot outside. We were 6 adults sitting in the sun 1-2 meters outside the pool door in the grass. We did not eat, drink, smoke or behave impolitely. We were dressed in shorts and shirts not swimsuits, relaxing and quietly watching our children in the pool when a very nice lady from the hotel politely regretted that unfortunately we had to go inside. Golf club rules do not allow guests to sit outside the poolroom (visit EUR 8 per person!)
Fourth: The restaurant is a complete disaster. We were various families, a total of 20-24 persons, all staying at the hotel, who went to the a la carte restaurant for dinner. We were not allowed to sit on the sunny terrace, even though we did never even asked to be seated together and despite the fact that there were empty tables. Those already seated were asked to move. We were placed on the cold and windy far end terrace, in the shadow. The chilly wind blew the heavy fumes from the barbecue right at us and we were not allowed to move despite allergic children. The food was in many cases uneatable. My teenage son could not even chew his meat. It was cooked so hard you could hardly tell beef from pork. It was the EUR 160 Barbecue Plate. When politely complaining to the barbecue chef I was told that this was the way barbecue was supposed to be. Other guests were told likewise. Only one barbecue plate was not dry and hard. My own chicken was dripping with fat but the meat was dry and tasteless.
We waited 40 minutes to pay and nobody cared if we wanted dessert.
Breakfast was as expected from a provicial hostel.

We have stayed 3 times at the Kikuoka due to family living nearby. It's clean and neat, beds are good, parking is available. The first times luckily we didn't have to eat at the a la carte restaurant. I am pretty sure that this third time was the very last.

  • Liked — Cleanliness
  • Disliked — The restaurant!!! The general attitude, the lack of English speaking TV, lack of in room internet

The hotel is more like a three star hotel, it is amazing these days the star inflation. Reminds me a bit to a countryside hostel. Nice golf course but hotel does not offer any golf packages. I don't think is worth to stay there if the only purpose is to stay in Luxembourg. I also noticed some people bringing their dogs with them (this is unbelievable in my opinion), and quite a few families with children. Uneven place at best.

This hotel is wonderful. Rooms are big and tastefully decorated. Beds are extremely comfortable. They even did have a playstation in the room! Bathroom was simply gorgeous with all toiletries. The hotel bar was very nice and the staff was always very friendly and helpful. Your mind and soul will rest in this place, just remember to take a map (or rather use gps navigation) when navigating to this hotel!! We paid 55 EUR per night (breakfast not included) which was dirty cheap. Location might be a bit downside (15-20 mins to city center) but the hotel itself and the surroundinds makes all worth it!

Great hotel, clean rooms, friendly staff, very nice breakfast. The hotel is located on the countryside, but it is not so difficult to find when you have a good map.
