We recently had to the opportunity to spend a night at Mana Mana during our trip to Singapore. Since it's only about a hour away from Singapore by high speed ferry, it's easy to do a day trip or short stay at Bintan Island. Our goals were to add a little beach vacation to our Singapore trip, and this was the perfect solution. I was able to make all the arrangements, including the ferry tickets online. On the day we went (Wednesday, mid June) the ferry was quite full, so advanced reservations were the correct way. The resort however was quite empty as it was mid week. The month of June is school holiday in Singapore, so we had expected it to be busier than it was. However, people at the hotel said it would be busier on the weekend.
There are a number of resorts on the northen end of Bintan Island, run under an organization called Bintan Resorts. This development seems to be a government planned arrangement that has upgraded the whole area. We chose Mana Mana because of the reviews we read, and because it seemed to fit our specifications, especially with regard to having proximity to a good beach, and reasonable price. Other important issues were air conditioning and attached bathrooms. On the scale of resorts, Mana Mana falls in the rustic and casual range. It is certainly not super luxury, there is no pool. And it is fairly small. On the plus side, the accomodations were clean, and comfortable. The airconditioner in our cabin was very quiet and effective. The service was good, and the staff friendly and helpful. We arrived by ferry early (about 1pm, check-in at 3pm) and since our room was ready, they let us check in early. The next day our ferry out was not until 1:30 pm and since it was not busy, they let us check out at that time.
The restaurant on the beach was more than adequate with a variety of local and western choices and we didn't bother to try outside restaurants. The beach was a wide flat bay with dense white sand, not the fluffy powdery kind. Not much waves on the day we were there, and quite shallow a long way out. There were fairly large areas that were just sandy without rocks or coral. Good for swimming and water sports. The resort area was kept very clean with the beach area swept daily. At the fringes of the resort there was some trash on the beach. One unexpected delight, the shelling was quite good. The resort shares it's bay with the Mayang Sari resort, which you might want to check out if you are looking for something more fancy.
We would go back again, it was a fun trip.

I stayed here for a weekend in September 04, whilst on business in Singapore. I booked last minute and paid 99SPD for a hut for one night.

It is perfect for a weekend break, but I wouldn't have wanted to stay for much longer as there is really very little to do at Mana Mana (or Bintan for that matter), other than mess around on the beach and sea. The island has been developed into a series of resorts (Mana Mana being on the budget end of the accommodation) and it is a really slick operation - right from arriving at the ferry terminal to settling your bill.... don't be fooled just because you are staying in a wooden hut!

The accommodation is fine - basic, but clean. The bar and restaurant was good for beach-type food - in particular the seafood rice was great.

Mana Mana has its own bit of beach and you can hire sailing dinghies and go on a snorkling trip.

My girlfriend Ria and me (Eric) discovered this place 5 years ago. We come over since once or twice each year. Average stay 4 weeks each year, so we can say we know the place. Temperature is always good, 31 to 33 degrees daytime and 29 to 29 at night. Little rain on average. February is good for competative watersport activity like the Amslam games and the AirBlas Kite Surfing tour because then it's more windy (monsoon time but not more rain) May/June is good for sun lovers, hot and less wind. September has a little bit more rain, in comparisson to other months that is, still oke. Place direcly on a lovely beach with white sand and blue clear water. Not to big, only 50, or so, rooms. Rooms are called cabanas, say two little houses under one roof, each with their own veranda. Small living quarter with open bedroom and seperate shower and toilet. Always hot water is nice for a change. Restaurant and bar directly on the beach and competely open. All Indonesian style buildings, only material used is wood and leaves (roof) Kitchen is oke, price/quality good. Service is even better, staff is allowed to interact / communicate with guests (if so dessired), not like in other resorst were staff is holding back because of management rules/politics. Monday to friday it's nice and quiet, saterday and sunday it's always fully booked because then the Singaporian who come over for a relaxing weekend. What can you do there ? Relex if you like on a super beach or go watersporting : jetski - diving - snorkeling - bananaboot - sailing - kite surfing and so on. Nearby go-carts and the rural area to eat and shop like the locals. For realy good golf courses
go to Ria Bintan or Bintan Lagoon. Info on the web, wow. For adventure go to Batam and enjoy the karaoke in the 5 star discothek Pacific. Last but not least, saterday night is beach party time. From all the other resorts guests come over and dance the night away. Help from the staff and management is realy super, just ask (if they don't already asked you if they can assist you) The guys know everything from the water and the island. Don't know what to say other then I love the place and specially the people overthere. This year we will visit the place twices, end of January and again in September. If anybody wants to know more, just mail me, no problem.
