“Great experience if you can get there”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2013

We had a two night stay in Parambikulam as part of our tour of Kerala. Spent one night in the tented niche accommodation and one night in Parambikulam tree top house. Tented niche is definitely best - accommodation was clean and central, all the tours depart from here. The tree top house is 25km further from the tented niche, at the 'end of the line' so to speak. It looked lovely from the outside, but is very basic (small and only has a bucket shower) and we found it slightly damp and musty (going by the reviews in the guest book it had been empty for a couple of months). Biggest problem was that after the bathroom floor got wet it seemed to attract an infestation of massive white slugs - disgusting! As per the other reviews, can agree that the food at both accommodations was excellent.

Enjoyed all the activities - safari drive is in a noisy minibus, so don't expect much, but still managed to see gaur, deer, monkeys, peacocks etc, as well as a stop at the Kannimara teak tree. On the night drive we saw a sloth bear which was definitely a highlight. Bamboo rafting was a fun experience, as was the village tribal symphony (traditional dance demonstration). Early morning bird watching was excellent - saw lots of birds (especially lovely kingfishers), but turned into elephant hunting as we trekked through the jungle to try to get close to an elephant munching bamboo - lots of fun! Our second trek from the tree-top hut was less exciting.

The difficulty with Parambikulam is finding information, booking and getting there. We tried all phone numbers and emails we could find and none worked. Ended up being the only bit of our entire trip we needed to use a tour company to book. However we used Grass Hills Tours and Travels and they were excellent. Booked everything exactly as we requested and the whole trip ran smoothly. While we were there private vehicles weren't allowed in the park (the Government seem to stop this sporadically) so two members of the Grass Hills team accompanied us in person on the bus (not an insignificant trip). Price was not too much more than booking direct either, well worth it for their services.

Definitely recommend a visit to Parambikulam as a unique experience if you can get there!

Room Tip: Tented niche is definitely the best option - book in advance to ensure availability.

Stayed there as a couple for a night. The rooms are basic but clean. The staff are very friendly and had a set meal prepared for us, the food being quite delicious. Average cost for a couple including the stay, all 3 meals, Kannimara Teak safari, Bamboo rafting, tribal symphony, early morning trekking was around 3k as we took the rooms in the main building, the others being completely booked. On arrival a guide is assigned who helps with all the activities like safari, rafting and trekking. During our stay there was a herd of elephants which had come down and left a trail of broken tress and shaved barks right behind the cottage. The place was worth the money

Room Tip: Try to book the tree house overlooking the dam waters.

An awesome place…

It is very difficult to book because the phone number given in the sites are not working properly.

But I am sure you will forget all the frustrations once you reach there…we booked ‘Tented Niche’ package which includes 3 time food, Kannimara Teak safari, Bamboo rafting, tribal symphony, early morning trekking..For two people its costs you 4500 RS.

Here you go for the phone number 91-9442201690

Please carry a BSNL sim card to there, becuase all other operators doesn't have Signal!

We couldn’t go for ‘Island Nest’ (Veettikunnu) package...But will go one day for sure!

Room Tip: Book in advance ,call to this number 91-9442201690

I was with my friends for 3 days and 2 nights...Loved the nature.... Tented Niche was extremely neat than we expected... overall was an wonderful experience except for the hindrance in their communication facilities... No net work.. Couldn't reach anybody through the phone as the land lines never worked...

We had 3 wonderful days in Parambikulam - just right, I think. The wildlife was superb! We had a great view of three elephants that wandered across our path while we were out on a trek, and stopped to have a good look at us. Also wonderful birds, monkeys, spotted deer, gaur, crocodiles, wildboar, peacocks... What really made our trip was one of the guides, who was incredibly knowledgeable - not just the animals and the birds but the plants and the trees as well, scientific as well as English and local names, not to mention uses - as well as being really friendly and helpful. We found our stay just got better and better as we found out what we could ask for in terms of activities. You are not allowed out of the compound without a guide, which seems very limiting and frustrating to begin with, until we realised that if you ask, you get! We had a birdwatching walk every morning at 6.30 (after early-morning tea), then a 2 - 3 hour 'trek' every morning before lunch, and when we made it clear on our second afternoon there that we didn't want to do the jeep safari all over again - we got another guided walk to ourselves in the late afternoon as well!

The accommodation was very good in the 'tented niches' and the food was great. We had no problems at all with drinking water - the filtered water in thermos flasks in the dining room was fine; I would really recommend a visit.

The wildlife sanctuary itself is nice but the experience is spoiled by the park management. The phone number (04253-245025) in all the guidebooks and on the official website and on their pamphlet does not work. They admitted as such when we turned up but did not see this as a problem. This is the only way to contact them. As we could not ring to book ahead, we drove for 5 hours from Munnar to find out there was no available accommodation. The 3 hour "safari" was a waste of time. The vehicle is a large van with dirty windows that the driver drives at 60 kph as though on a race track giving practically no chance of seeing animals. He stops at 2 or 3 dam slipways for you to take a picture and then stops for 45 minutes of the 3 hour safari for a "chai break". I would call it a scenic drive not a safari. The 3 hour trek however was quite good and we saw quite a few animals.
