“Clean and Quiet Off the Beaten Track”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

We stayed here for one night while circling Iceland on the Ring Road. It is about 25 minutes west from Egilsstadir on Lake Lagarfljot. The location is in the middle of the only large forest in Iceland and there are several good forest walks in the area. There were few guests when we visited the first week of September but service was good and the young staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and the bedding comfortable. The room and hotel were very quiet. We ate dinner and breakfast and both were quite good. The dinning room has great views overlooking the lake even when it is raining (it was). Aside from the forest walk there is nothing to do here so if your time is short it is out of the way from the Ring Road circuit.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the lake side.

Hotel Hallormsstadur met all our needs. We stayed in a cabin located 10 minutes from the reception and a restaurant. The cabin was small, but very clean. The view of the forest (so rare in Iceland) and of the lake, made the location perfect.
We truly enjoyed a dinner buffet, by far our most varied and sophisticated meal in Iceland. There were dozens of dishes including rare specialties such as smoked horse meat, grilled whale and herring served five different ways.
The receptionist was very helpful in helping us to locate our next lodging. She made multiple phone calls to make sure we knew where to go next. Overall, we had a great time at this hotel.

Room Tip: We recommend staying in a cabin.

I stayed there about a year ago. It was the night of our wedding but they did nothing to make us feel even vaguely special despite being fully aware of our wedding as I dropped our luggage there moments before our wedding, all dressed up. No effort made.
The hand towels were stained with foundation but after the stress we'd had over the last few days before our wedding, I simply didn't feel like complaining. What I can only assume were the corridor doors, close enough to our room, started slamming around 6-7 o'clock in the morning, leaving us with hardly any sleep whatsoever.
To sum things up - disappointed and kinda wish we'd just camped at the camping site near by for the night. Would have been a more special/ memorable experience on the whole.

We stayed one night in the guesthouse adjacent to the hotel building. Our room was sparsely equipped and had a shared bathroom. The free WIFI network was not working. The toilet tissue was out in the evening like there were no batteries inside the remote control of the public TV on the floor. Even when we got the batteries the TV was still not working! So despite the fact that the stuff was trying their best and the breakfast was reasonable good. I recommend not to stay in the guesthouse of the hotel, but rather to choose a room inside the hotel building which looked much better.

Located near Lake Lagerfljot, this hotel is settled in a picturesque forest - close to some of the only native forest left in Iceland. The room was quite nice, the beds comfortable. I relished having access to a hair drier and the rain forest showerhead was heavenly! The hired help was quite surly. The restaurant's dinner was good but was very overpriced, served in a buffet style. A diverse, traditional Icelandic fare was prepared, so one could try some unusual tidbits: reindeer pate, salmon pate, fish balls, horse meat, and varieties of stinky pickled fish.

Hotel is located about 25 Km from the City of Egilsstadir and few hundred meters away from the main road. Our room was very clean and spacious. Front desk staff is courteous and helpful. The views of beautiful Lake Lagarfljot is a bonus for the guests staying here. There are hiking trails, horse and boat rental facilities available very close to the hotel. We are quite happy with our stay in this good hotel with quite surrounding.

I stayed in the hotel for two nights during my tour around Iceland. It was a nice hotel, and was clean and neat. The room was large, the bathroom more than adequate, My room was on the ground floor, but stairs were involved to reach it, and my guide arranged to use another entrance which eliminated them. We walked down another flight of stairs to the breakfast room, so I am fairly sure there was not a lift. For those who may need that facility, I suggest you make full enquiries.

The hotel had a lovely outside eating area, but two cold on the first night.

Breakfast was included in the price, and the buffet was plentiful. One of the only hotels in Iceland which included herring on the breakfast buffet.

Dinner is served in two areas. There was a more formal buffet service, and a simple more casual option. We chose the more casual option, ordering pizza. It did however take a good while to arrive.

The hotel is in a very pretty area. It is forested and the road into the hotel was a series of winding swtichbacks, rivers and valleys. it was so beautiful, remote, peaceful and quiet.
I loved it.

After dinner I went walking, so peaceful just wandering around the area.

My guide told me a folk story set in the area. it is about a little girl a ring and a worm. It is an intersting story, and he said that people are stillencouraged to look for the worm in the lake. There are rewards to be had, if you see it. My suggestion keep looking for it, but don't hold your beath doing so.

Well worth considering this hotel when travelling around this area. Again I do not know the price, it was booked for me by someone else, as part of the complete tour around Iceland's Ring Road, with a private guide.
