Hvedholm Castle

The room was very large and had a four poster bed, a real princess dream come true :o)

There is a small park with a lake, which is nice for a small walk. I imagine it would be even more romantic in spring time.

They have a very nice wine cellar with a great opputunity for wine tasting, as well as a small shop, where you can buy silverware and the likes.

Their tea room and restaurant can definitly be recommended.

A beautiful looking place as driving into parking area. No signage to direct one to check-in. My husband and I stood at an office door for at least 20 minutes to check in while two women talked on the phone. No help with luggage and is a long walk over gravel from parking. We asked to use the elevator and was "allowed" to use service elevator "only for luggage". After two attempts to order an afternoon soft drink did we buy one from a kitchen worker. Check out was impossible. A seemingly unhappy blonde woman refused our credit cards only accepting a debit card. She didn't seem to know how to work the credit card machine - lectured us re. credit card use. We left a day early. We had pre-paid (a mistake) as no reimbursement "is allowed".

We happened upon Hvedholm Castle (it's really a palace/manor, not a castle) as we were looking for some inexpensive B&B's in the Funen area. We didn't think they would have anything in our price range but it turns out they operate 3 separate outbuildings of very good standard at much lower rates than the main building. Even if you don't sleep in the manor, you still have all the trimmings and the cottages are only 100-200 meters from the main building. For our family of 3, we spent roughly 800 DKK ($170) per night including breakfast.

The grounds are spectacular, the estate is steeped in history and the location serene.

Tips: make sure to check out the magnificent ball rooms, sitting rooms etc on the second floor of the manor. Also, you can walk up the tower and enjoy a fantastic view (if you're not prone to vertigo!). Make sure you go for a stroll on the country roads and take in the landscape and the small hamlet with it's beautiful houses and church.

Faaborg, about 10 minutes by car, is a romantic town with many restaurants and small shops. If you have a car or bicycle, the roads in South Funen will take you through fairy book towns and hamlets. It's one of our favorite destinations.

Room Tip: Ask for the less expensive cottages

I was hesitant about booking a deluxe room with dinner and breakfast because of the price (around $400 for two of us for one night), but I we ended up very satisfied with the experience we had for the money. We arrived a few hours before check-in time and were allowed to head to our room early. The room was pleasant, very clean, and had reasonable decor (a little mid-nineties, but still attractive) with very high ceilings and a fantastic view of the pond.

We took a 15 minute walk to a very interesting church dating from the 1400s nearby (it's huge and round, you can't miss it). Upon returning, we enjoyed cakes and coffee in one of the castle's cozy and elegant drawing rooms. After that, we took part in a wine tasting down in the wine cellar (which I think is normally about $15, but we were able to do it with the package I purchased). Tthe "sommelier" walked us through each of the wines and also shared some interesting history of the castle. He (and our fellow guests) was kind enough to do the whole thing in English so we could understand.

After the wine tasting, we explored the whole castle and were pleased to find that nearly every enormous and beautifully decorated common room was open for us to enjoy. We felt like the whole thing was ours, as we didn't run into any of the other 40+ guests who were staying there as we perused the place.

Dinner was very good and included local fare. Dessert was incredible. We went for the wine pairings, which was pretty pricey at $75 per person, but it was nice to enjoy with dinner and we were offered more wine several times. Breakfast the next morning was buffet style and offered many options.

Overall, we were very pleased with the experience-- we went in with high expectations and were definitely satisfied. Also, it is possible to get to the hotel via public transit. From Odense, you can take the 141 bus to the 925, which stops about 3/4 mile from the hotel, not a bad walk (except the next morning in the snow, haha).

I went to Hvedholm slot for two nights in our easterholiday with my ten year old daughter. I ordered the stay through internet - and called the hotel to confirme the stay and price. The man answering the phone should not have this job. He gave very little information and seemed not to be interested in selling or being particularly friendly.

When we arrived to the hotel it was the same man recieving us - and he was indeed a man of few words, less information and no charm. And that it ALL bad to say about this fantastic place.
We got a beautifull and very romantic room with a nice view, very clean, and very tastefull decorated - and a nice bathroom with a shower. The castle itself and its surroundings are breathtaking with a wonderfull park and a small lake with two fairy tail swans swimming arround. The overall feeling - moving around in the castle is very exclusive with thick royal looking carpets, flowers, old paintings etc.
The first night we were there there were not so many people - and dining in the restaurent was a marvelous expeirience for my ten year old daughter and for me aswell.
Our waiter was an enderly man with royal manners treating my daugther as a princess topping her amasement over the silver plates, candles and soft classical dining music by serving her chilld-friendly spaghettibolognese as has it been the most exclusive foir grass. The three coursed adult dinner was amasing - and the hot chokolate my daughter ordered for dessert would alone make a trip to Hvedholm castle worth the money.
Breakfast was fantastic and we could think of nothing missing.
The most precious tressure of Hvedholm slot turned out to be the woman in charge of the daily "eveything". She told us everything we wanted to know and more about Hvedholm slot and the history of the castle and its surroundings. She told us about rooms and halls to go and see in the castle and ended up giving us a tour of through all of magnificent castle. Since it was easter there was an arrangement for children to paint eastereggs and make birdnests out of braches. And though my daughter was the only child there at the time - she spend two ours happyli painting eastereggs with us.
and since we were exited about any ghoststorries she could come up with she helped us change room the second night to another beautiful room - this time in the castle tower where it's said that "the green lady" fell out of the window into the lake. We were very exited - though we saw no ghosts ;-) We had choosen the cheapest rate offered for the stay and we also brought our dog with no extra cost. We are sure that we will come back many times - and since the castle was so amasingly decorated for easter - we can't wait to see how it will look for christmas in december.

To celebrate my partner's birthday, I signed on to the danish website of the castle. There was an offer for 2 nights for DKK1700 (about GBP170). I signed up for it giving my credit cards details.
I later received an email confirmation in danish. If I had not scrolled down and am able to read danish, I would not have seen the qualifying note that the room I booked did not have ensuite bathroom. The closest bathroom is out of the room, down the hall way and shared with others.

So I called the castle to clarify since this was never mentioned on the website.
The staff who answered was extremely rude. When I spoke english, she was rude. Then I switched to my semi-fluent danish and she got annoyed. She didn't try to help or clarify at all. She simply said I could cancel if I want. So I did!

Bad service and misleading information on the website plus confirmation in danish. If you cannot read danish, be careful. Get it translated. But I would recommend to skip this place and go for some other castles.
